Public Stem Cell Banks: Considerations of Justice in Stem Cell Research and Therapy.Ruth R. Faden, Liza Dawson, Alison S. Bateman-House, Dawn Mueller Agnew, Hilary Bok, Dan W. Brock, Aravinda Chakravarti, Xiao-Jiang Gao, Mark Greene, John A. Hansen, Patricia A. King, Stephen J. O'Brien, David H. Sachs, Kathryn E. Schill, Andrew Siegel, Davor Solter, Sonia M. Suter, Catherine M. Verfaillie, LeRoy B. Walters & John D. Gearhart - 2003 - Hastings Center Report 33 (6):13-27.
If stem cell-based therapies are developed, we will likely confront a difficult problem of justice: for biological reasons alone, the new therapies might benefit only a limited range of patients. In fact, they might benefit primarily white Americans, thereby exacerbating long-standing differences in health and health care.

How Green Management Influences Product Innovation in China: The Role of Institutional Benefits.Chengli Shu, Kevin Z. Zhou, Yazhen Xiao & Shanxing Gao - 2016 - Journal of Business Ethics 133 (3):471-485.
Does being green facilitate product innovation? This study examines whether green management in firms operating in China fosters radical product innovation to a greater extent than it does incremental product innovation and investigates the underlying institutional mechanisms involved in the relationship between green management and product innovation. The findings show that green management is more likely to lead to radical product innovation than to incremental product innovation. Moreover, government support as a formal institutional benefit more strongly mediates the effect of (...)

Finite-Time Asynchronous Stabilization for Nonlinear Hidden Markov Jump Systems with Parameter Varying in Continuous-Time Case.Lianjun Xiao, Xiaofeng Wang & Lingling Gao - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-12.
The finite-time asynchronous stabilization problem has received great attention because of the wide application of actual engineering. In this paper, we consider the problem of finite-time asynchronous stabilization for nonlinear hidden Markov jump systems with linear parameter varying. Compared with the existing research results on Markov jump systems, this paper considers the HMJSs which contain both the hidden state and the observed state in continuous-time case. Moreover, we consider the parameters of the systems are time varying. The aim of the (...)

A Hybrid Brain-Computer Interface Based on Visual Evoked Potential and Pupillary Response.Lu Jiang, Xiaoyang Li, Weihua Pei, Xiaorong Gao & Yijun Wang - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Brain-computer interface based on steady-state visual evoked potential has been widely studied due to the high information transfer rate, little user training, and wide subject applicability. However, there are also disadvantages such as visual discomfort and “BCI illiteracy.” To address these problems, this study proposes to use low-frequency stimulations, which can simultaneously elicit visual evoked potential and pupillary response to construct a hybrid BCI system. Classification accuracy was calculated using supervised and unsupervised methods, respectively, and the hybrid accuracy was obtained (...)

A Multiple Filtering and Correlation Array Signal Processing Technique for Cased-Hole Acoustic Logging and Applications.Fan-Tong Kong, Can Jiang, Yuan-Da Su & Xiao-Ming Tang - 2020 - Interpretation 8 (3):SL1-SL8.
In cased-hole acoustic logging, estimating the formation velocity is often problematic when the casing is poorly bonded with the formation. The overwhelmingly large casing waves dominate the measured waveforms and overlap with the low-coherence, weak formation arrival, contributing to the failure of conventional semblance processing method. To tackle this problem, we have developed a filtered frequency semblance array waveform signal processing technique. The multiple filter technique is first used to filter the measured waveforms. We then apply the [Formula: see text]th (...)

High-Resolution Characterization of Geologic Structures Using the Synchrosqueezing Transform.Naihao Liu, Jinghuai Gao, Zhuosheng Zhang, Xiudi Jiang & Qi Lv - 2017 - Interpretation: SEG 5 (1):T75-T85.
The main factors responsible for the nonstationarity of seismic signals are the nonstationarity of the geologic structural sequences and the complex pore structure. Time-frequency analysis can identify various frequency components of seismic data and reveal their time-variant features. Choosing a proper time-frequency decomposition algorithm is the key to analyze these nonstationarity signals and reveal the geologic information contained in the seismic data. According to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, we cannot obtain the finest time location and the best frequency resolution at (...)

The brain-computer interface of steady-state visual evoked potential is one of the fundamental ways of human-computer communication. The main challenge is that there may be a nonlinear relationship between different SSVEP in other states. For improving the performance of SSVEP BCI, a novel CNN algorithm model is proposed in this study. Based on the discrete Fourier transform to calculate the signal's power spectral density, we perform zero-padding in the signal's time domain to improve its performance on the PSD and make (...)

Exploiting Sharing Join Opportunities in Big Data Multiquery Optimization with Flink.Xiao-Yan Gao, Radhya Sahal, Gui-Xiu Chen, Mohammed H. Khafagy & Fatma A. Omara - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-25.
Multiway join queries incur high-cost I/Os operations over large-scale data. Exploiting sharing join opportunities among multiple multiway joins could be beneficial to reduce query execution time and shuffled intermediate data. Although multiway join optimization has been carried out in MapReduce, different design principles are not considered. To bridge the gap of not considering the optimization of Big Data platforms, an end-to-end multiway join over Flink, which is called Join-MOTH system, is proposed to exploit sharing data granularity, sharing join granularity, and (...)

Several functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have demonstrated abnormalities in static intra- and interhemispheric functional connectivity among diverse brain regions in patients with major depressive disorder. However, the dynamic changes in intra- and interhemispheric functional connectivity patterns in patients with MDD remain unclear. Fifty-eight first-episode, drug-naive patients with MDD and 48 age-, sex-, and education level-matched healthy controls underwent resting-state fMRI. Whole-brain functional connectivity, analyzed using the functional connectivity density approach, was decomposed into ipsilateral and contralateral functional connectivity. We computed (...)

Hypergraph Regularized Discriminative Nonnegative Matrix Factorization on Sample Classification and Co-Differentially Expressed Gene Selection.Yong-Jing Hao, Ying-Lian Gao, Mi-Xiao Hou, Ling-Yun Dai & Jin-Xing Liu - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-12.
Nonnegative Matrix Factorization is a significant big data analysis technique. However, standard NMF regularized by simple graph does not have discriminative function, and traditional graph models cannot accurately reflect the problem of multigeometry information between data. To solve the above problem, this paper proposed a new method called Hypergraph Regularized Discriminative Nonnegative Matrix Factorization, which captures intrinsic geometry by constructing hypergraphs rather than simple graphs. The introduction of the hypergraph method allows high-order relationships between samples to be considered, and the (...)

Structural Balance Control of Complex Dynamical Networks Based on State Observer for Dynamic Connection Relationships.Zilin Gao, Yinhe Wang, Jiang Xiong, Yong Pan & Yuanyuan Huang - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-9.
This paper investigates the observer-based structural balance control for a class of complex dynamical networks. Generally speaking, a complete complex dynamical network is composed of two coupled subsystems, which are called node subsystem and connection relationship subsystem, respectively. Similar to synchronization and stabilization of networks, the structural balance is another phenomenon of networks and determined by the state of connection relationships. However, it is not feasible to design the controller for the CS directly because the states of the connection relationships (...)
