This book review essay points to some of the more novel and controversial contributions of A Theory of Bioethics, by Joseph Millum and David DeGrazia (Cambridge University Press, 2021), such as their account of moral status. With a remarkable breadth of topics, the book is characterized by philosophical care and nuance and by spelling out the implications of the authors’ theorizing for real‐world, pressing questions, for instance, about the implications of Millum and DeGrazia's theoretical work on moral status for embryo (...) research, animal research with mice and apes, and human‐brain organoids. Questions about when to limit unhelpful treatments are often raised in general medicine but are less commonly considered in psychiatry. Here we describe a survey of U.S. psychiatrists intended to characterize their attitudes about the management of suicidal ideation in patients with severely treatment-refractory illness. Respondents (n = 212) received one of two cases describing a patient with suicidal ideation due to either borderline personality disorder or major depressive disorder. Both patients were described as receiving all guideline-based and plausible emerging (...) treatments. Respondents rated the expected helpfulness and likelihood of recommending each of four types of intervention: hospitalization, additional medication changes, additional neurostimulation, and additional psychotherapy. Across both cases, most respondents said they were likely to provide each intervention, except for additional neurostimulation in borderline personality disorder, while fewer thought each intervention would be helpful. Substantial minorities of respondents indicated that they would provide an intervention they did not think was likely to be helpful. Our results suggest that while most psychiatrists recognize the possibility that some patients are unlikely to be helped by available treatments, many would continue to offer such treatments. The present volume, a tribute to Harry Dondorp, contains contributions to the symposium held on the occasion of his farewell at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. This study investigated whether musical training and bilingualism are associated with enhancements in specific components of executive function, namely, task switching and dual-task performance. Participants belonging to one of four groups were matched on age and socioeconomic status and administered task switching and dual-task paradigms. Results demonstrated reduced global and local switch costs in musicians compared with non-musicians, suggesting that musical training can contribute to increased efficiency in the ability to shift flexibly between mental sets. On dual-task performance, musicians also (...) outperformed non-musicians. There was neither a cognitive advantage for bilinguals relative to monolinguals, nor an interaction between music and language to suggest additive effects of both types of experience. These findings demonstrate that long-term musical training is associated with improvements in task switching and dual-task performance. (shrink)

A Pos­ sible Analogue of the Bourbaki Programme in Physical Science, Springer-Ver­ lag 1979, im folgenden kurz [Strnkturalismus] genannt, entstanden sind. In diesen Abhandlungen werden jeweils gewisse Aspekte des strukturalistischen Theorienkonzeptes behandelt. The distinction of things in themselves and appearances is an integral part of Kant’s transcendental idealism, yet it has often been met with rather significant hostility. Moreover, what surely has not contributed to the popularity of this Kantian doctrine is that there are, or at least there appear to be, two distinct models, detectable in Kant’s texts, to account for this distinction. Most commonly, these two models are called the “two aspect view” on the one hand and the “two world (...) view” on the other, but it is possible that these labels themselves invite misunderstandings and obscure rather than clarify what Kant had in mind with his distinction. In this paper, I shall first briefly discuss how these two models could be described and labelled in a more suitable manner, namely as the “one composite entity view” and the “two separate objects view”. Subsequently, I will enquire which of the models is pertinent for Kant’s solution to the 3rd antinomy. I will try to show that although the two models appear to be incompatible, it is at least plausible to read Kant as using both of them in this crucial text of his oeuvre. Moreover, Kant’s strategy in solving the freedom problem on the basis of an indirectly realist account of the divine intellect provides the clue to understanding how these seemingly incompatible models can co-exist without forcing Kant into maintaining contradictory claims. Dystonia is a movement disorder that can have a debilitating impact on motor functions and quality of life. There are 250,000 cases in the United States, most with childhood onset. Due to the limited effectiveness and side effects of available treatments, pediatric deep brain stimulation has emerged as an intervention for refractory dystonia. However, there is limited clinical and neuroethics research in this area of clinical practice. This paper examines whether it is ethically justified to offer pDBS to children with (...) refractory dystonia. Given the favorable risk-benefit profile, it is concluded that offering pDBS is ethically justified for certain etiologies of dystonia, but it is less clear for others. In addition, various ethical and policy concerns are discussed, which need to be addressed to optimize the practice of offering pDBS for dystonia. Strategies are proposed to help address these concerns as pDBS continues to expand. (shrink)

Dieser Essay behandelt das Phanomen der doppelten Belastung von Frauen, die zugleich "ihren" Haushalt in Ordnung halten und einem "normalen" Beruf nachgehen (wollen/miissen).Er konzentriert sich auf zwei Seiten einer dialektischen Situation: einmal das naheliegende Faktum, daB eine zweifache Belastung die Arbeitshetze intensiviert, den StreB intensiviert und die freie Zeit so weit "auffriBt", daB ein humanes Leben ausgeschlossen bleibt: die Not der Tugend; zum andern der weniger leicht zugangliche, gleichwohl reale Sachver halt, daB Belastungen auch Herausforderungen darstellen, Bewiih rungs proben mit (...) der Chance zu personlicher Entwicklung und strate gischer Entfaltung: die Tugend der Not. Beide Seiten gehOren untrennbar zusammen. Wie ihr Verhaltnis im einzel nen verlauft, ist eine offene Frage. In dieser Studie wird erstmals der Versuch unternommen, die bei der Klassifikation von Musik zur Anwendung gelangenden Kriterien und ihre Interdependenzen systematisch zu erfassen und zu beschreiben. Als Quellen dienen dabei Typologien der Musik aus der Zeit vom sechsten (Boethius) bis zum neunzehnten Jahrhundert (A.B. Marx und Ferdinand Hand) sowie die bisherigen musikwissenschaftliche Ansatze einer Gattungstheorie. Unter Einbeziehung von Erkenntnissen aus der Literaturwissenschaft werden insgesamt acht Grundkriterien der Klassifikation erlautert. Mit ihrer Hilfe lassen sich die vorliegenden Definitionen und Typologien vergleichend (...) analysieren und in Beziehung zueinander setzen. AbschlieBend geht die Studie der Frage nach, ob der Gattungsbegriff in der zeitgenossischen Kunstmusik tatsachlich - wie von einigen Autoren postuliert - obsolet geworden ist. This study tries, for the first time, exhaustively to collect and describe the criteria used to classify music and to consider the interrelationship between these criteria in a systematic way. Typologies of music from the sixth century (Boethius) to the nineteenth (A.B. Marx and Ferdinand Hand) serve as sources for this study, as well as musicological writings on genre theory. Partly by exploiting the findings of literary criticism, eight basic criteria of classification are developed. They allow a comparative analysis of all existing musical definitions and typologies. Finally, the study discusses whether or not genres have become obsolete in contemporary art music (as some scholars have proclaimed). The answer is negative: genres today are perhaps more important in supporting an adequate reception of contemporary art music than at any other time in history. Wolfgang Marx was born in 1967 in Bremen. He studied Historical and Systematic Musicology and Philosophy at Hamburg University where he took the Dr phil in 2002. He was Product Manager for Berlin Classics in 1998 and Catalogue Manager of an internet music retailer in Hamburg in 2000. Since 2002, he has held a permanent Lectureship in Musicology at University College Dublin. He has co-edited a volume on Gyorgy Ligeti, published on Medieval organ tablatures and the requiem as a musical genre, and is co-editor of the Frankfurter Zeitschrift fur Musikwissenschaft and the Journal of the Society for Musicology in Ireland. In his entire oeuvre Brentano defended a scientific conception of philosophy and advocated the adoption of a rigorous, scientific method. Given this background it might come as a surprise that in his reflections on aesthetics he firmly rejected the classic definition of aesthetics as the science of beauty. This must not be read as an expression of disinterest in – or a dismissal of – aesthetics, though. It is rather an expression of Brentano's view concerning the position of aesthetics in (...) his overall system. He conceived it – on a par with logic and ethics – not as a theoretical science, but as a practical discipline that was rooted in psychology: aesthetics, Brentano suggests, is not constituted by a set of intrinsically related propositions; it rather serves the practical purpose of instructing those who want to experience the beautiful with correct taste or to create works of art. The task of aesthetics is, in other words, to formulate a set of rules or instructions that teach us how to correctly experience beauty, how to come to prefer the more over the less beautiful, but also how to create beauty and how to produce works of art that have the power to bring about aesthetic pleasure in the beholder. We shall investigate certain set-theoretic pigeonhole principles which arise as generalizations of the usual pigeonhole principle; and we shall show that many of them are equivalent to full AC. We discuss also several restricted cases and variations of those principles and relate them to restricted choice principles. In this sense the pigeonhole principle is a rich source of weak choice principles. It is shown that certain sequences of restricted pigeonhole principles form implicational hierarchies with respect to ZF.
