Longitudinal associations for right-wing authoritarianism, social justice, and compassion among seminary students.Peter J. Jankowski, Steven J. Sandage, Daniel J. Hauge, Choi Hee An & David C. Wang - 2022 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 44 (3):202-222.
Religious/spiritual communities in the United States hold significant differences in the relative valuing of social order and progress toward social justice, and religious/spiritual leaders play an influential role in fostering those values. This recognition has prompted calls for theological education to revise the process of student formation, equipping them to address an increasingly diverse social world and the social disparities within their larger communities. Right-wing authoritarianism tends to be associated with a preference for social order and various forms of (...)

  5. Art and moral change: a reexamination.Ki Joo Choi - 2024 - Washington, DC: Georgetown University Press.
This book reconsiders the relationship between aesthetics and theological ethics. The primary question it seeks to answer is whether artistic creativity is a morally relevant activity. Drawing on the work of Jonathan Edwards and Thomas Aquinas, Choi argues that the arts are the cultural medium through which we can better understand what is morally possible, and that aesthetic objects can serve as snapshots of a particular community's perspectives on the good life. Art, in other words, offers glimpses not only (...)

The role of perception in Jonathan Edwards's moral thought: The nature of true virtue reconsidered.Ki Joo Choi - 2010 - Journal of Religious Ethics 38 (2):269-296.
This essay provides an interpretation of Jonathan Edwards's moral thought that calls attention to the motif of perception in his conception of true virtue. The aim is to illumine the extent to which Edwards's virtue ethics can be included in and contribute to prevailing approaches to virtue in contemporary theological ethics. To advance this proposal, this essay attends to the question of moral agency that Edwards's reflections on charity, the new spiritual sense, and religious affections raise. This procedure offers an (...)

Bribery and corruption: biblical reflections and case studies for the marketplace in Asia.Yung Hwa - 2018 - Singapore: Graceworks Private. Edited by Soo-Inn Tan.
This book responds to the need to help Christians in Asia find a biblical response to pressures in the marketplace. It takes seriously both Scripture and the context Asian Christians function in. It contains a theological framework for grappling with real-time problems, responses from theologians, and actual case studies from the marketplace.

The Highest Good in Kant’s Philosophy.Thomas Höwing (ed.) - 2016 - Boston: De Gruyter.
The idea of a final end of human conduct – the highest good – lies at the centre of important parts of Kant’s philosophy, such as his moral theory, his philosophy of religion, his views on the historical progress of the human species, and his conception of human rationality. This collection of new essays attempts to re-evaluate the doctrine of the highest good and to determine its relevance for contemporary philosophy.

Unconscious processing embedded in conscious processing: Evidence from gaze time on chinese sentence reading.Yung-Chi Sung & Da-Lun Tang - 2007 - Consciousness and Cognition 16 (2):339-348.
The current study aims to separate conscious and unconscious behaviors by employing both online and offline measures while the participants were consciously performing a task. Using an eye-movement tracking paradigm, we observed participants’ response patterns for distinguishing within-word-boundary and across-word-boundary reverse errors while reading Chinese sentences . The results showed that when the participants consciously detected errors, their gaze time for target words associated with across-word-boundary reverse errors was significantly longer than that for targets words associated with within-word-boundary reverse errors. An Arithmetically Complete Predicate Modal Logic.Yunge Hao & George Tourlakis - 2021 - Bulletin of the Section of Logic 50 (4):513-541.
This paper investigates a first-order extension of GL called \. We outline briefly the history that led to \, its key properties and some of its toolbox: the \emph{conservation theorem}, its cut-free Gentzenisation, the ``formulators'' tool. Its semantic completeness is fully stated in the current paper and the proof is retold here. Applying the Solovay technique to those models the present paper establishes its main result, namely, that \ is arithmetically complete. As expanded below, \ is a first-order modal logic (...)

Gross negligence manslaughter of intern doctors – scapegoating or justified?Wing Hin Kason Lin - forthcoming - Clinical Ethics.
Criminalizing unintentional mistakes in medicine as the offence of gross negligence manslaughter has always been a contentious issue. The threshold of prosecution is not well-defined, and even less clear when faced with a situation in which an intern doctor is held liable. This commentary attempts to review the current legal position of holding an intern doctor liable for gross negligence medical manslaughter.

    Did Acidic Stress Resistance in Vertebrates Evolve as Na + /H + Exchanger‐Mediated Ammonia Excretion in Fish?Yung-Che Tseng, Jia-Jiun Yan, Fumiya Furukawa & Pung-Pung Hwang - 2020 - Bioessays 42 (5):1900161.
How vertebrates evolved different traits for acid excretion to maintain body fluid pH homeostasis is largely unknown. The evolution of Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE)‐mediated NH4+ excretion in fishes is reported, and the coevolution with increased ammoniagenesis and accompanying gluconeogenesis is speculated to benefit vertebrates in terms of both internal homeostasis and energy metabolism response to acidic stress. The findings provide new insights into our understanding of the possible adaptation of fishes to progressing global environmental acidification. In human kidney, titratable H+ and (...)

Re-Imagining Theological Reflection on God from the Context of Korean Women.Choi Hee An - 2008 - Feminist Theology 16 (3):350-364.
When Western Christianity came to Asia, it merged with Eastern religions and histories and developed very differently in different places. Today Asian women in each country build up very unique images of God. They practice Eastern forms of worship and liturgical rites, and do indigenized theologies. They simultaneously try to find their own ways of naming, imaging, believing in and communicating with their own God. Korean Christianity has inherited many images of God from Western Christian doctrines and theologies. However, when (...)

Praktische Lust: Kant über das Verhältnis von Fühlen, Begehren und praktischer Vernunft.Thomas Höwing - 2013 - Boston: De Gruyter.
Kant ascribed an important role to pleasure in human action. This study provides a comprehensive interpretation of Kant's concept of practical pleasure based on a detailed analysis of his theories of feelings, desire, and practical consideration. In this way, the author not only provides a new perspective on Kant's action theory and moral philosophy, but also elucidates Kant's contribution to resolving key problems in the theory of emotions.

Lindberg (eds.), The Psychology of Meaning. Washington, D.C.: American Psychological Association. pp. 339-355.
The goal of the current chapter is to discuss how counterfactual thinking serves a more general sense-making function and to delineate the mechanisms by which this may occur. To demonstrate the meaning as sense-making function of counterfactual thinking, we (Lindberg & Markman, 2012) selected a historical event that was likely to be compelling to most student participants, yet not one with which most students would be familiar. This allowed for the manipulation of event details for the purpose of examining underlying (...)

The search for new ideas often frustratingly cycles back to old ones, a phenomenon known as fixation. Recent research has shown ways to kick‐start finding new uses for familiar objects, a prototypical creativity task: wandering in the mind or the world or working on a messy desk. Those techniques seem to succeed by helping break fixation, but do not guide the search for new ideas. The perspective‐taking or human‐centric or empathic mindset championed by many in HCI and in design firms (...)

    Avoiding the Swine.Jee Won Choi - 2021 - Stance 14 (1):115-123.
What constitutes a good life? A hedonist’s answer to this question is rather simple— more pleasure, less pain. While hedonism was previously a widely accepted belief, it now suffers from several crucial objections. A challenge particularly vexing to hedonists is the Philosophy of Swine: could it be possible that our lives may be less than that of a theoretical swine? In this essay, I argue that lifetime hedonism, the view of hedonism concerned with one’s total lifelong well-being, does not survive (...)
