This book describes how these different visions on science came to be and what ideals of knowledge and styles of argumentation they suppose. It also discusses the nature, structure and development of the Humanities. It delves into the history of these fields and the varying notions on their cultural place and function. In this commemorative article the significance of Paul Feyerabend's work for philosophy of science in general is reviewed. Its unifying perspective is identified as the fight against any possible constraint on imagination (i.e. on the capacity of generating alternatives). This alternative-maximizing search was already central in Feyerabend's 'pre-anarchistic' studies. In fact, I claim that the really significant theses and arguments, as far as the intrinsic debate within the philosophy of science is concerned, were present in these earlier studies (criticism of (...) the conditions of consistency and meaning invariance, pragmatic theory of observation, incommensurability thesis ...). The context of the 'historical turn' is sketched in which these arguments were developed as aresponse to current views on science. But these arguments do possess an independent normative significance. As Feyerabend construes them however, this independence is uncertain, because it is the value of proliferating imaginative alternatives as such which partly conditionalizes the significance of these arguments (as it conditionalizes the very value of science itself). In this way the philosophy of the critical imagination could eventually turn the critical values against the philosophy of rational criticism itself. And indeed, (1)a certain combination of the tenets concerning consistency and meaning variance undermines the idea of crucial test, and (2) in Against Method xht panegyric of the imagination (couched in a new narrative of the history of science) is used as the main weapon to override any methodological account. Philosophy of science is now convicted of what is the only deadly sin — the murder of imagination. But science itself is also accused of the same crime: it has become not merely an ideology — which is nothing to worry about — but a totalitarian ideology, monopolizing epistemic and educational claims. I argue that, although the reintroduction within philosophy of science of such questions belonging to a philosophy of culture is called for as a complement for intrinsic approaches, the Feyerabendean way of treating those questions makes it impossible to state anything about the specificity of science within culture. On the other hand two 'master ideas' still seem apt to stimulate further discussion: (1) the critique of the consistency condition, backed by the attack on the thesis of the 'relative autonomy of facts', and (2) the defence of meaning variance, backed by the pragmatic theory of observation, and leading in turn to the idea of incommensurability. At the same time this idea of incommensurability could also play a role in a philosophy of the relation between science and culture (which remains to be developed). (shrink)

Among the great ironies of quantum mechanics is not only that its conceptual foundations seem strange even to the physicists who use it, but that philosophers have largely ignored it. Here, Bernard d'Espagnat argues that quantum physics--by casting doubts on once hallowed concepts such as space, material objects, and causality-demands serious reconsideration of most of traditional philosophy. On Physics and Philosophy is an accessible, mathematics-free reflection on the philosophical meaning of the quantum revolution, by one of the world's leading authorities (...) on the subject. D'Espagnat presents an objective account of the main guiding principles of contemporary physics-in particular, quantum mechanics-followed by a look at just what consequences these should imply for philosophical thinking. The author begins by describing recent discoveries in quantum physics such as nonseparability, and explicating the significance of contemporary developments such as decoherence. Then he proceeds to set various philosophical theories of knowledge--such as materialism, realism, Kantism, and neo-Kantism--against the conceptual problems quantum theory raises. His overall conclusion is that while the physical implications of quantum theory suggest that scientific knowledge will never truly describe mind-independent reality, the notion of such an ultimate reality--one we can never access directly or rationally and which he calls "veiled reality"--remains conceptually necessary nonetheless. Verrassend misschien voor filosofen buiten Frankrijk, maar in Parijs is wetenschap altijd een object van filosofische reflectie geweest – niet in de vorm van de analytische wetenschapsfilosofie zoals die buiten Frankrijk wordt onderwezen, maar onder de noemer van historische epistemologie, of soms ook wel kortweg épistémologie genoemd. Dit themanummer wil een inleiding zijn op deze traditie in haar denkers.

Het meest succesvolle denken over de natuur vind je in de natuurwetenschappen. Filosofie wordt wel eens omschreven als denken over denken. In het handboek Over wetenschappelijk denken behandelen we het denken over het wetenschappelijk denken. Dat maakt van dit boek zowel een algemene inleiding in de wijsbegeerte als meer in het bijzonder een inleiding tot de wetenschapsfilosofie. Eerst gaan we in dit handboek dieper in op de natuurfilosofische revolutie in het antieke Griekenland. De mythische verklaringen van natuurfenomenen zoals regenbogen (...) moesten toen plaats maken voor natuurfilosofische verklaringen die beroep doen op zuiver fysische oorzaken, zoals gekleurde wolken. Vervolgens komt de natuurwetenschappelijke revolutie aan bod. Het filosofisch denken over de natuur en het Aristotelische wereldbeeld worden op hun beurt verdrongen door de moderne natuurwetenschap en astronomie van Copernicus, Kepler, Galilei, Newton en Lavoisier. Zowel de oude Grieken als moderne filosofen en natuurwetenschappers zoals Bacon en Newton dachten niet alleen over de natuur na, maar ook over de manier waarop het best over de natuur wordt nagedacht. Wetenschappelijke redeneervormen zoals deductie, inductie en abductie hebben daarin een prominente plaats. Elk van deze redeneervormen en ook logica en waarschijnlijkheid bekijken we van naderbij. De observatie van een enkele zwarte zwaan (cover) volstaat om te deduceren dat niet alle zwanen wit zijn, ook als we door talloze vroegere observaties van witte zwanen inductief hadden afgeleid dat het waarschijnlijk is dat alle zwanen wit zijn. Zo komen we tot reflectie op wat wetenschap nu eigenlijk is en hoe we wetenschap kunnen onderscheiden van pseudowetenschap. (shrink)

In een tijd waarin 'nepnieuws' zich steeds nadrukkelijker naar de voorgrond dringt, is de vraag naar wat waarheid is buitengewoon belangrijk. Ook vragen of wetenschappelijke studies betrouwbaar zijn en of een (sociale) wetenschapper neutraal beleidsadvies kan geven zijn aan de orde van de dag. Daarop kan de wetenschapsfilosofie antwoord geven. Dit boek biedt kritische reflectie op belangrijke vraagstukken in de filosofie van de sociale wetenschappen. De sociale wetenschapper wordt ingeleid in wetenschapsfilosofische thema's als causaliteit, verklaringsstijlen, reductionisme en holisme, statistiek, (...) modellen en onderzoeksparadigma's. Daarnaast is er ruim aandacht voor de wetenschappelijke praktijk en de positie die (sociale) wetenschappers innemen in het maatschappelijk debat. Kritik der Repräsentation ist eine Einführung in die Theorie der Überzeugungen und der Wissenskulturen, der Erkenntnis und des Wissens. Sie warnt davor, angesichts des neurowissenschaftlichen Naturalismus zu resignieren, und plädiert für eine "kopernikanische Wende der Objektivität". Aufklärung über Repräsentation beruht auf der Klärung dessen, was Einstellungen, Meinungen und Überzeugungen sind und ob sie als wahr gerechtfertigt werden können. Daher steht die Rolle der freien richterlichen Überzeugung im Recht ebenso zur Debatte wie die Bedeutung von Überzeugungen in naturwissenschaftlichen Experimentalkulturen. Weil Ansprüche (...) auf die eine Wahrheit Kennzeichen totalitärer Herrschaft und Politik sind, schließt das Buch mit der Frage nach dem Zusammenhang von Wissen, Urteilsfähigkeit, Recht und Demokratie. Het zal geen van de aanwezigen verbazen dat we het volgende allemaal tegenkomen in empirisch onderzoek: verborgen aannames, ongegronde conclusies, vreemde analyse-eenheden, een ontbrekende uitsplitsing van gegevens, een ‘post hoc ergo propter hoc’-redenering (een simpele correlatie die leidt tot ongerechtvaardigde gevolgtrekkingen over oorzaak en gevolg), ontbrekende contextuele verklaringen, onjuiste en misleidende vergelijkingen, onthutsend onbetrouwbare steekproeven die leiden tot uiterst dubieuze extrapolaties, en hypotheses die voorspellen of proberen te achterhalen en bevestigen wat de gemiddelde persoon al weet. We beschikken natuurlijk over (...) een overvloed aan gegevens uit pedagogisch en onderwijskundig onderzoek en een haast onbegrensde hoeveelheid grafieken en tabellen met cijfers die pretenderen iets te meten. Deze gegevens komen echter maar al te vaak tot stand op basis van concepten van twijfelachtige waarde. Er ontbreekt vaak een ondersteunend theoretisch kader waarmee bevindingen kunnen worden geïnterpreteerd, verklaard of vertaald naar andere contexten, en waarmee bovendien de betekenis van de resultaten aan niet-specialisten kan worden duidelijk gemaakt. Scientism and metaphysics Who deals with scientism soon discovers that scientism can be interpreted in many different ways. Most interpretations of scientism are so radical that they can hardly be defended, or so modest that they are nothing more than trivial platitudes nobody would disagree with. This poses a dilemma for adherents of scientism. Yet, in this article I will propose a particular interpretation of scientism that does seem prima facie defensible, while at the same time cannot be put away (...) as being merely a trivial platitude. Having such a maximally fruitful interpretation of scientism does not help the adherents of scientism, though. For it entails a falsehood, namely that metaphysics cannot give us insights in the overall structure and nature of reality. I shall argue for this by fleshing out an interpretation of metaphysics, on which we can certainly say that metaphysics enables us to acquire said insights. Finally, I will discuss and assess a number of objections against my refutation of the aforementioned maximally fruitful interpretation of scientism. (shrink)
