Interactions between humans and machines that include artificial intelligence are increasingly common in nearly all areas of life. Meanwhile, AI-products are increasingly endowed with emotional characteristics. That is, they are designed and trained to elicit emotions in humans, to recognize human emotions and, sometimes, to simulate emotions. The introduction of such systems in our lives is met with some criticism. There is a rather strong intuition that there is something wrong about getting attached to a machine, about having certain emotions (...) towards it, and about getting involved in a kind of affective relationship with it. In this paper, I want to tackle these worries by focusing on the last aspect: in what sense could it be problematic or even wrong to establish an emotional relationship with EAI-systems? I want to show that the justifications for the widespread intuition concerning the problems are not as strong as they seem at first sight. To do so, I discuss three arguments: the argument from self-deception, the argument from lack of mutuality, and the argument from moral negligence. (shrink)

This article examines the idea that “human dignity” means that humans as such are valuable. It does so not from a perspective of normative or metaethics but from the perspective of the practice of valuing that consists in manifested dispositions of actions and emotions. From this point of view a commonly neglected problem becomes evident: How can we value a concrete person non-instrumentally without any reference to her individual properties or achievements and without having any relationship with this person? The (...) suggestion for an answer to this question coincidences with an answer to another question concerning the idea of human dignity, namely the question regarding the relation between the ideas of value on the one hand and dignity on the other hand: to be able to explain what it means to value humans as such, we have to assume that “dignity” is not just the indication of a certain value, but is also a condition that humans can be in. So-called “social egg freezing” allows a woman to retain the possibility of trying to have a child with her own oocytes later in life, even after having become infertile in the strict sense of the word.There is a debate about whether it is morally permissible at all, the extent to which it should be permitted legally or even supported, and whether it is ethically desirable. This paper contributes some thoughts to the issue of ethical desirability. More precisely it deals with (...) the question of whether there is any valuable argument to be made on the basis of the idea of life phases and normative expectations related to them. So the question is: Is there a right time in life to have a child, and does this speak against or in favor of social freezing? This question is answered in three steps. First, I will give an overview of ethical arguments that are mostly put forward in favor or against the use of social egg freezing and show that and why the question of life phases should be taken into account. Second, I will sketch what I understand by phases of life, more precisely, what I understand by normatively conceptualized life stages, that are to be distinguished from other kinds of life phases, and how they relate to a good life. Third, I will present two arguments that rely on the idea of life stages and speak against social egg freezing. However, I will criticize them and instead show that from the perspective of life stages nothing speaks against using the technique within certain limits. (shrink)

In the debate on meaning in life as part of a good human life, the role of time still needs to be worked out in greater detail. This paper argues that making the role of time in a specific sense explicit allows for the development of an account that leaves behind some of the objections with which current accounts are confronted. To show this, I will reconstruct two accounts of meaning in life and critically discuss them—the account of meaning by (...) valuable activities and the account of meaning by intelligibility. The first one struggles with how to distinguish the value of meaning from the values of happiness and morality and neglects the common understanding of meaning in other contexts; the second one at least partly falls back into the older discussion about the meaning of life with undesired theoretical consequences. A new account, called the account of meaning by temporal textures, focuses on narrative intelligibility, showing that meaning in life builds on temporal relations between events. This time focused narrative account avoids some misleading associations and enables one to answer some pertinent questions concerning the relevance of meaning for the good life as a whole. (shrink)

Was heißt es, sich in unserer globalisierten Welt als eine vollverantwortliche Person zu verstehen und zu verhalten? Einerseits scheint es richtig, dass wir global verantwortlich sind, d.h. dass wir auch gegen entferntes Leid etwas tun sollten; andererseits aber ist wegen vielfacher Überforderungsproblemen unklar ist, wie man diese Verantwortung tatsächlich übernehmen können soll – was wiederum dagegen spricht, dass wir diese Verantwortung berechtigtermaßen zuschreiben können. Um einen Aspekt dieses großen Themas zu behandeln, konzentriere ich mich in diesem Aufsatz auf den Anwendungsbereich (...) von extremer Armut und argumentiere in folgenden Schritten. Zuerst spitze ich das Thema zu auf ein Problem, das Samuel Scheffler in diesem Zusammenhang konstatiert hat, nämlich einen Widerstreit zwischen dem, was Verantwortung unter den Bedingungen der Globalisierung bedeutet und dem, wie wir uns grundsätzlich als Handelnde zu verstehen gewohnt sind. Dann zeige ich erstens, dass dem Thema einer epistemischen Überforderung dabei entscheidendes Gewicht zugesprochen wird, zweitens jedoch, dass sich, genauer besehen, dieses Problem gar nicht in dieser Art stellt. Dafür schlage ich eine Analyse des Verantwortungsbegriffs vor, die es ermöglicht, Kriterien zu identifizieren, anhand derer gewisse Grenzen gezogen werden können, so dass die Zuschreibung der Verantwortung gerechtfertigt werden kann. Philosophical theories of the good life usually focus on at least one of three as- pects by which a human life can be assessed: well-being, meaning or morality. This paper seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the idea of meaning in life. It argues that the dimension of meaning in a human life is conditioned by time; an idea which has so far not been sufficiently considered. Firstly, Susan Wolf's approach is presented, in which meaning is understood to (...) be comple- tely "timeless". Next, based on considerations by Cheshire Calhoun and Antti Kauppinen, it is discussed why and how one should include temporal aspects so that one obtains an understanding of meaning that is "time-relative". Lastly, a concept of meaning that is "time-constituted" is outlined, which makes clear that a temporal reference structure is a condition for all meaning in life. (shrink)

Zu den Symptomen medizinisch depressiver Menschen gehört manchmal eine veränderte Zeiterfahrung, die als quälend empfunden wird. Die Zeit verlangsamt sich bis hin zum Eindruck des Stillstandes der Zeit. Diese Psychopathologie der Zeit wird hier als extremes Beispiel für etwas angesehen, das es in schwächerer Form auch nicht-pathologisch gibt und das als solches auch ein Thema für philosophische Theorien des guten Lebens darstellt. Die Untersuchung der pathologischen Störungen dient als Negativfolie, um zu zeigen, wie im Fall gelingenden Lebens menschliches Zeitbewusstsein verfasst (...) sein muss bzw. verfasst ist. Offenbar sind wir auf die Erfahrung einer fortlaufenden Zeit angewiesen. In diesem Aufsatz wird erörtert, welcher Art genau diese Erfahrung ist, auf welche verschiedenen Weisen sie gestört sein kann und inwiefern solche Störungen ein ethisches Problem sind, insofern sie die Lebensführung in grundsätzlicher Hinsicht beeinträchtigen. Dafür wird insbesondere zwischen einem basalen und einem personalen Zeitbewusstsein unterschieden und das Problem auf der zweiten Ebene verortet. (shrink)

Discussions about assisted suicide have hitherto been based on accounts of dignity conceived only as an inherent value or as a status; accounts of dignity in which it appears as a (contingent) attitude, by contrast, have been neglected. Yet there are two good reasons to consider dignity to be an attitude. First, this concept of dignity best allows us to grasp a crucial aspect of everyday language: people often express fears of losing their dignity—and it is not possible to explain (...) this with an account in which dignity is inherent. Second, such a concept allows us to adduce new argumentation where the argument based on status ends. Dignity considered as a status provides grounds to argue for the moral permissibility of assisted suicide, in the sense that in such an account individuals possess the normative power to waive their right to life. But the question then remains of how to decide what counts as a good reason for assisted suicide—and this is where an argument based on dignity as an attitude can provide illumination. (shrink)

It is often suggested that people in large groups behave and act differently than when they are alone. More precisely, it is an often-repeated claim that they tend to act in a morally problematic or plainly reprehensible way. Still, a fully satisfying explanation has not yet been given for why this is the case. In this paper, I suggest that the phenomenon of shared moods may play a crucial role here. In order to explicate and support this thesis, first, I (...) will point out the problem in a more detailed way while also considering findings in social psychology. Second, I will give a sketch of how shared moods should be conceptualized as a special affective phenomenon by refering to the discussion of collective intentionality and emotions. Thirdly and finally, I will address concretely the question of what might make shared moods morally precarious by distinguishing also between collective and joint moods that both can change a person’s self-understanding as an actor. Online-Kommentare unter journalistischen Artikeln können grundsätzlich zum demokratischen Diskurs, genauer der politischen Meinungsbildung beitragen und sie werden dazu tatsächlich genutzt. Allerdings wird diese Praxis auch empfindlich gestört durch unsachliche, aggressive, denunzierende Rede und ähnliches. Wie kann man dagegen vorgehen? Für eine Antwort darauf nenne ich zunächst Bedingungen eines deliberativen Diskurses, an denen die Qualität des Prozesses politischer Meinungsbildung gemessen werden kann. Zweitens erörtere ich, inwiefern die Praxis des Online-Kommentierens dem entsprechenden Ideal nahekommt oder zuwiderläuft und inwieweit das von dem spezifischen (...) Setting abhängt. Drittens diskutiere ich Möglichkeiten, diesem Problem zu begegnen. Meine These lautet, dass es vielversprechend ist, am Faktor der Anonymität anzusetzen – jedoch schlage ich nicht vor, wie es häufiger getan wird, Anonymität zu reduzieren, sondern, im Gegenteil, sie in bestimmter Hinsicht zu erhöhen. Für die Gestaltung zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen im Zeitalter des Digitalen ist eine vergleichsweise junge Subdisziplin der Informatik-Forschung besonders zentral: Affective bzw. Emotion Computing. Dazu werden Techniken gezählt, die es erlauben, Emotionen, Affekte oder verwandte menschliche Zustände zu erfassen, gezielt auszulösen, zu simulieren und/oder auf sie sinnvoll zu reagieren. Emotion Computing steht an einer Schnittstelle zwischen Informatik, Ingenieurwissenschaft und Theorien der Gefühle, wie es sie traditionell vor allem in der Psychologie und Philosophie gibt (aber auch in der Soziologie und weiteren Geistes- und (...) Sozialwissenschaften). Besonders fortgeschritten sind Technik und Anwendungen mit der ersten Funktion: die des Erfassens von Gefühlen, insbesondere ausgehend von der menschlichen Mimik. In diesem Beitrag werden die Grundlagen dieses spezifischen Verfahrens kritisch untersucht, um eine ethische Analyse vorzubereiten. Dazu gehört zum einen eine Klärung der theoretischen Basis der Technik: Was für ein Emotionsverständnis und welche epistemologischen Prämissen sind zentral? Zum anderen ist zu fragen, was mit dem Einsatz der Technik genau erreicht werden soll und welche Leistungen die Systeme dafür genau erbringen müssten. Nach einer kurzen Skizze des Stands der Technik wird bisher geäußerte Kritik aus kulturwissenschaftlicher und psychologischer Perspektive an den Grundlagen der digitalen Gefühlserfassung rekonstruiert und kritisch diskutiert. Abschließend werden Perspektiven für wichtige philosophische und interdisziplinäre Forschung in diesem Feld aufgezeigt. (shrink)

Von Klarheit über Gefühle hängt viel ab: sowohl das Gelingen zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen als auch die Möglichkeit eines selbstbestimmten Lebens. Die Autorin fragt dezidiert, was es heißt, Emotionen zu verstehen, fremde und eigene;wiedas Verstehenvor sich geht und wie weit wir damit kommen können. Dazu gehören die Punkte: Was ist es für eine Emotion, warum ist sie entstanden, was bewirkt sie oder wie echt ist sie? Emotionen und Verstehen werden in wechselseitigem Bezug aufeinander erläutert. Die differenzierte, beispielreiche Antwort ist sowohl ein Beitrag (...) zur Philosophie der Psychologie als auch zur Hermeneutik. (shrink)

In diesem Aufsatz wird untersucht, wie sinnvoll und berechtigt die Rede von neuen Formen der Menschenwürdeverletzung durch die Nutzung von KI-Systemen ist. Nach der Skizze eines Kernverständnisses von Menschenwürdeverletzung werden vier Anwendungsgebiete von KI-Systemen exemplarisch erörtert. Es wird dafür argumentiert, dass Menschenwürdeverletzungen zwar weder mit extensiver Werbung und Überredungsstrategien noch mit der Nutzung von Daten über Menschen an sich verbunden sind, dass sie aber tatsächlich da drohen, wo Menschen nicht selbst darüber entscheiden können, welche ihrer Daten wofür verwendet werden und (...) wo ein KI-System selbstständig, ohne weiteres Zutun eines Menschen, über wichtige Belange von Menschen wie Leben und Tod entscheidet. Following the depiction theory by Clark and Fischer we would expect people interacting with robots to experience fictional emotions akin to those toward films or novels. However, some people's emotional reactions toward robots display the motivational force typical to non-fictional emotions. We discuss this incongruity and offer two suggestions on how to explain it while maintaining the depiction theory.

Wie lässt sich der Bereich des Privaten heute genau beschreiben? Welchen Wert besitzt Privatheit in digitalisierten Gesellschaften für den Einzelnen und die Gesellschaft als Ganzes? Welche Werte und Lebensformen werden durch Privatheit geschützt, welche eingeschränkt? Entstehen durch die Informationsasymmetrie zwischen Technologieunternehmen, staatlichen Verdatungsinstitutionen und Verbrauchern/Bürgern möglicherweise neue Machtstrukturen? Welche rechtlichen Implikationen ergeben sich hieraus? Dieser Band geht diesen und anderen Fragen, die sich im Hinblick auf die etablierte Gleichung von Freiheit und Privatheit stellen, nach und versucht Antworten zu finden.

Although consolation is one of the classic religious subjects it plays no role in the current debate about religious emotions. One reason for this neglect could be that this debate is mostly based on classical emotions such as joy and fear, love and hope, and that consolation is not understood as an emotion. This paper tries to show that consolation in fact can and should be seen as an emotion. After naming and refuting some reasons that speak against taking consolation (...) to be an emotion, I will explain how consolation can be positively conceptualized as an emotion within a recent theory of emotions. It will be decisive to see that the experience of consolation can be understood not only hedonistically-qualitatively, but also intentionally. This structural conception allows for a differentiated description of various types of consolation as an emotion, also, in the tradition of William James, of a secular as well as a religious form of consolation. What precisely do we mean by respect? How should we adjudicate between conflicting demands of respect? What obstacles stand in the way of respect? The papers contained in this international anthology were presented at the North American Association of the Community of Inquiry conference in Vancouver, Canada, in June 2012, and were the outcome of in-depth and interdisciplinary discussions around the various aspects of respect. Sie wird im klinischen Alltag häufig als ethische Herausforderung wahrgenommen, zudem sind unter Klinikern juristische Unsicherheiten und Fragen der korrekten Vorgehensweise verbreitet. Die hier vorgestellte Münchner Leitlinie zu Entscheidungen am Lebensende soll rechtliche Unsicherheit reduzieren, Klinikumsmitarbeiter für die ethische Dimension von Therapieentscheidungen am Lebensende sensibilisieren und ethisch begründete Entscheidungen fördern. Aus organisationsethischer Perspektive soll mit der Leitlinie eine Reflexion und Meinungsbildung zu einem ethisch relevanten (...) Themenbereich erfolgen und ein Beitrag zur Qualitätssicherung der Patientenversorgung und damit auch zur Patientenzufriedenheit geleistet werden. Die Prozesse der Leitlinienentwicklung, -aktualisierung und -implementierung werden vorgestellt. Die wesentlichen inhaltlichen Elemente der Leitlinie mit Darstellung der Rechtslage, der Definition zentraler Begriffe und Klärung medizinischer Entscheidungskriterien werden an Hand eines Entscheidungsalgorithmus dargestellt. Inhalt und Prozess der Leitlinienentwicklung werden auf die folgenden organisationsethischen Qualitätskriterien hin überprüft: deliberativer Prozess, inhaltliche Transparenz, repräsentative Zusammensetzung der Arbeitsgruppe, Implementierung und Evaluation der Leitlinie. Institutionen, die diese Leitlinie übernehmen wollen, sollten diese von einem autorisierten Gremium überprüfen lassen und auf die spezifischen Bedürfnisse ihrer Institution adaptieren. A primary goal of this book is to enhance intercultural academic exchange and to encourage further research and practical work in this field.

As concerns of the Earth heading towards environmental change is gaining more prominence, this article will introduce a pilot study intended to investigate the common ideas children have about nature and how such ideas emerge within a philosophical community of inquiry about nature. We are particularly interested in a cultural comparison between German and Canadian children in order to see if the different historical and cultural developments influence how children understand and feel about nature. This pilot study contributes towards a (...) greater understanding of the cultural differences underlying how children’s perceptions of nature are tied to their identity formation. Furthermore, the process of philosophical inquiry may lend sensitivity to how children reflect and feel as they grow in today’s culture focused on environmental sustainability and economic development. Promoting philosophical and ethical education in schools requires academic education of teacher candidates who are able to apply professional methods. In schools, information pills in contrast to the academy, advice philosophy and ethics need to be taught in a practical and interactive way.?Learning-by-doing?, more about as distinguished from philosophy according to the?scholastic concept?. Philosophy according to the?universal concept? deals with questions generally asked not only by philosophers, but by all thinking people.

Although the topic of data-sharing has boomed in the past few years, practices of datasharing have attracted only scant attention within working groups and scientific cooperation (peer-to-peer data-sharing). To understand these practices, the author draws on Max Weber’s concept of social relationship, conceptualizing data-sharing as social action that takes place within a social relationship. The empirical material consists of interviews with 34 researchers representing five disciplines—linguistics, biology, psychology, computer sciences, and neurosciences. The analysis identifies three social forms of data-sharing (...) in peer-to-peer relationships: (a) closed communal sharing, which is based on a feeling of belonging together; (b) closed associative sharing, in which the participants act on the basis of an agreement; and (c) open associative sharing, which is oriented to “institutional imperatives” (Merton) and to formal regulations. The study shows that far more data-sharing is occurring in scientific practice than seems to be apparent from a concept of open data alone. If the main goal of open-data policy programs is to encourage researchers to increase access to their data, it could be instructive to study the three forms of data-sharing to improve the understanding of why and how scientists make their data accessible to other researchers. THEN GO TO YOUR WORK WITH JOY - SOCIALITY AND SACRAMENTAILITY IN MARTIN LUTHER'S TEACHING OF THE CALLINGThe article investigates Martin Luther’s teaching of the calling in a social perspective. In the tradition following the pioneering work of Max Weber, the Reformation has often been interpreted a steppingstone towards processes of disenchantment, secularization and rationalization. In recent years, a growing body of literature has argued that this tradition overlooks crucial elements of reformation spirituality such as sacramentality, sociality and the (...) affirmation of ordinary life. With his conceptualization of work as a calling, Luther elevated and sanctified the everyday life and activities as a central component of the Christian life and the constitution of society. Here we might find the seed for the exceptionally high value ascribed to work in contemporary, Lutheran Nordic societies. (shrink)

Logical paradoxes – like the Liar, Russell's, and the Sorites – are notorious. But in Paradoxes and Inconsistent Mathematics, it is argued that they are only the noisiest of many. Contradictions arise in the everyday, from the smallest points to the widest boundaries. In this book, Zach Weber uses “dialetheic paraconsistency” – a formal framework where some contradictions can be true without absurdity – as the basis for developing this idea rigorously, from mathematical foundations up. In doing so, (...) class='Hi'>Weber directly addresses a longstanding open question: how much standard mathematics can paraconsistency capture? The guiding focus is on a more basic question, of why there are paradoxes. Details underscore a simple philosophical claim: that paradoxes are found in the ordinary, and that is what makes them so extraordinary. (shrink)

The Protestant ethic — a moral code stressing hard work, rigorous self-discipline, and the organization of one's life in the service of God — was made famous by sociologist and political economist Max Weber. In this brilliant study (his best-known and most controversial), he opposes the Marxist concept of dialectical materialism and its view that change takes place through "the struggle of opposites." Instead, he relates the rise of a capitalist economy to the Puritan determination to work out anxiety (...) over salvation or damnation by performing good deeds — an effort that ultimately discouraged belief in predestination and encouraged capitalism. Weber's classic study has long been required reading in college and advanced high school social studies classrooms. (shrink)

Eva Picardi has been one of the most influential Italian analytic philosophers of her generation. She taught for forty years at the University of Bologna, raising three generations of students. This collection of selected writings honors her work, confirming Picardi's status as one of the most important Frege scholars of her generation and a leading authority on the philosophy of Donald Davidson. Bringing together Picardi's contributions to the history of analytic philosophy, it includes her papers on major 20th-century figures such (...) as Wittgenstein, Quine, Davidson, Rorty, and Brandom. She examines their work in comparison with the philosopher Michael Dummett's, illuminating contrasts between American Neo-pragmatism and Continental philosophy. By considering key contributions made by Gadamer and Adorno and contrasting them with Davidson and Rorty's proposals, Picardi is able to bridge the Analytic and Continental divide. Featuring an introduction by Annalisa Coliva and new translations of previously unpublished papers, this collection emphasizes the significance of Picardi's work for a new generation of readers. This book provides a philosophical theory explicating the cognitive contribution of metaphor. Metaphor effects a transference of meaning, not between two terms, but between two structured domains of content, or ‘semantic fields’. Semantic fields, construed as necessary to a theory of word-meaning, provide the contrastive and affinitive relations that govern a term’s literal use. In a metaphoric use, these relations are projected into a second domain which is thereby reordered with significant cognitive effects. The book provides a revision and refinement (...) of ‘the semantic theory of metaphor’. Taking into account pragmatic considerations and recent linguistic and psychological studies, the book aims to forge a new understanding of the relation between metaphoric and literal meaning.
