Ageing Prisoners’ Views on Death and Dying: Contemplating End-of-Life in Prison.Violet Handtke & Tenzin Wangmo - 2014 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 11 (3):373-386.
Rising numbers of ageing prisoners and goals on implementing equivalent health care in prison raise issues surrounding end-of-life care for prisoners. The paucity of research on this topic in Europe means that the needs of older prisoners contemplating death in prison have not been established. To investigate elderly prisoners’ attitudes towards death and dying, 35 qualitative interviews with inmates aged 51 to 71 years were conducted in 12 Swiss prisons. About half of the prisoners reported having thought about dying in (...)

Ethics-Related Responses to Specific Situation Vignettes: Evidence of Gender-Based Differences and Occupational Socialization.Aileen Smith & Violet Rogers - 2000 - Journal of Business Ethics 28 (1):73 - 86.
This research presents findings from a study of gender-based differences in an ethical decision situation. The study focuses on gender as it relates to situational factors and accounting experience. The primary element of interest is how the gender of the actor (the person described in each vignette) influences the evaluation/assessment of the ethical/unethical decisions. While previous research has provided evidence of ethical differences relating to the gender of the responding subjects, limited evidence has been presented relating to situational issues that (...)

The Wizards of the Violet Flame. A Magical Mystery Tour of Romanian Politics.Doru Pop - 2014 - Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies 13 (38):155-171.
This study presents the manifestations of irrational practices in recent Romanian politics. Providing a short history of the mystical and the occult in Romanian politics, this research uses as a case study the alleged use of the occult “violet flame” in the presidential campaign of 2009. By showing how public religiousness and the daily mystical practices are changing, the author is describing the transformations of the national political communication under the pressure of the news media, which are becoming more (...)

Employee and Coworker Idiosyncratic Deals: Implications for Emotional Exhaustion and Deviant Behaviors.Dejun Tony Kong, Violet T. Ho & Sargam Garg - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 164 (3):593-609.
By integrating conservation of resources and social comparison perspectives, we seek to investigate how employees’ own i-deals, independently from and jointly with their coworker’s i-deals, determine their emotional exhaustion and subsequent deviant behaviors. We conducted a field study focusing on task i-deals, and used Actor–Partner Interdependence Model and polynomial regression to test the hypotheses. We found that emotional exhaustion not only mediated the negative relationship between employees’ own task i-deals and deviant behaviors, but also mediated the positive relationship between upward (...)

What Scientists Say About the Changing Risk Calculation in the Marine Environment Under the Harper Government of Canada.Melanie G. Wiber & Allain J. Barnett - 2019 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 44 (1):29-51.
This paper examines how the Harper Government of Canada shut down both debate about threats and research into environmental risk, a strategy that Canadian scientists characterized as the “death of evidence.” Based on interviews with scientists who research risks to the marine environment, we explore the shifting relationship between science and the Canadian government by tracing the change in the mode of risk calculation supported by the Harper administration and the impact of this change. Five themes emerged from the interviews: (...)

Disclosure of Past Crimes: An Analysis of Mental Health Professionals' Attitudes Towards Breaching Confidentiality.Tenzin Wangmo, Violet Handtke & Bernice Simone Elger - 2014 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 11 (3):347-358.
Ensuring confidentiality is the cornerstone of trust within the doctor–patient relationship. However, health care providers have an obligation to serve not only their patient’s interests but also those of potential victims and society, resulting in circumstances where confidentiality must be breached. This article describes the attitudes of mental health professionals when patients disclose past crimes unknown to the justice system. Twenty-four MHPs working in Swiss prisons were interviewed. They shared their experiences concerning confidentiality practices and attitudes towards breaching confidentiality in (...)

Foucault and Feminist Philosophy of Disability by Shelley L. Tremain.Tabetha K. Violet - 2020 - International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics 13 (1):174-177.
Shelley Tremain's book, Foucault and Feminist Philosophy of Disability, considers how disability has been incorrectly contained by medical ethics or ignored entirely by mainstream philosophy. She argues for an antifoundational approach to disability that accounts for the historical and material conditions of people while also attending to the conditions of disabled philosophers themselves. This important contribution to the fields of philosophy, gender studies, and disability studies explicitly addresses how ableism has impacted academic discourses in philosophy, harming disabled philosophers, disabled people, (...)

Constructing the Gendered Risk of Illness in Lyrica Ads for Fibromyalgia: Fear of Isolation as a Motivating Narrative for Consumer Demand.Tabetha K. Violet - 2022 - Journal of Medical Humanities 43 (1):55-64.
Direct-to-consumer television advertisements for Lyrica in the United States create narratives of gendered domestic normalcy to which women with fibromyalgia are encouraged to aspire through pharmaceutical intervention. This paper unpacks images and narratives within these advertisements to demonstrate that they rely on metaphors that represent gendered expectations in order to evoke guilt and provoke a desire for what Joseph Dumit calls “health as risk reduction,” and what I argue is an attempt to show disability being erased. Following Stuart Hall’s Encoding/Decoding (...)

    Violets and Violence: Two Notes.Howard Jacobson - 1998 - Classical Quarterly 48 (01):314-.
Servius was surely not the first to show discomfort with Vergil's choice of the word violaverit. Observing that the simile in lines 67–8 derives from Homer , he seems to be apologizing for Vergil when he explains that the poet's violaverit translates Homer's νινη. And discomfort there should be. The notion of ‘tainting, spoiling, damaging, defiling’ that violare should carry seems out of place both for the ivory-image and for the picture of the beautiful girl. Modern commentators have been no (...)

War on Black Men: Arguments for the Legalization of Drugs.Walter E. Block & Violet Obioha - 2012 - Criminal Justice Ethics 31 (2):106-120.
Abstract The leadership of the black community is concerned with welfare, with equality, with unemployment, with discrimination, with racism, with the pay gap, and with dozens of other such traditional issues. Oh, yes, they are also apprehensive about the use of addictive drugs. But, as we speak, young male members of this community are being incarcerated at frightful rates, and, even worse, are killing each other to boot. One would think that this latter issue would occupy the interest of black (...)

The Involuntary Nature of Music-Evoked Autobiographical Memories in Alzheimer’s Disease.Mohamad El Haj, Luciano Fasotti & Philippe Allain - 2012 - Consciousness and Cognition 21 (1):238-246.
The main objective of this paper was to examine the involuntary nature of music-evoked autobiographical memories. For this purpose, young adults, older adults, and patients with a clinical diagnosis of probable Alzheimer’s disease were asked to remember autobiographical events in two conditions: after being exposed to their own chosen music, and in silence. Compared to memories evoked in silence, memories evoked in the “Music” condition were found to be more specific, accompanied by more emotional content and impact on mood, and (...)

How to Deal with the Consent of Adults with Cognitive Impairment Involved in European Geriatric Living Labs? [REVIEW]Cédric Annweiler, Philippe Allain, Marine Asfar, Loïc Carballido, Catherine Hue, Frédéric Blazek, Frédéric Noublanche & Guillaume Sacco - 2021 - Philosophy, Ethics, and Humanities in Medicine 16 (1):1-6.
BackgroundLiving labs are realistic environments designed to create links between technology developers and end-users. Research in LLH covers a wide range of studies from non-interventional studies to CT and should involve patients with neurocognitive disorders. However, the ethical issues raised by the design, development, and implementation of research and development projects in LLH have been the subject of only little interest thus far.ObjectiveOur aim was to determine a pragmatic, ethical and regulatory correct approach to seek the informed consent of patients (...)

The study examined their views on the relationship between success and ethical conduct as well as the extent and nature of ethical conflicts experienced by the respondents. Some comparisons are made with similar studies that have been conducted in the past. Respondents have the most ethical conflicts with customers and employees, and with regard (...)

The Evolution of Complexity is addressed to a broad audience of academics and researchers from different disciplines, who are interested in the picture of our world emerging from the new sciences of complexity. This book reviews the new concepts proposed by the diverse theories of evolution, self-organisation, general systems, cybernetics, and the `complex adaptive systems' approach pioneered by the Santa Fe institute. The thread which holds everything together is the growth of complexity during the history of the universe: from elementary (...)
