Alors que l’on trouvait dix biches dans le texte hébreu, la traduction de l’Ancien Testament en latin par saint Jérôme n’en conserve que trois : celles qui étaient associées à un faon (Jb. 39, 1 ; Pr. 5, 19 et Jr. 14, 5). Les théologiens, suivant le commentaire de Bède, trouvent dans le verset des Proverbes un support fécond pour des analogies mariales, ecclésiales et conjugales, faisant de la biche un modèle de maternité. Celui-ci culmine au xiie siècle sous l’influence (...) du culte de la Vierge. Parallèlement, une autre tradition exégétique inspirée de Grégoire le Grand voit dans la douleur des biches parturientes de Job et Jérémie un parallèle avec celle des prédicateurs et apôtres. Cette association a priori surprenante avec des personnages masculins éclaire en fait la construction fluide du genre au Moyen Âge. Enfin, l’évolution du motif de l’analogie biche-Christ, dans les textes comme dans les images, permet d’appréhender la façon dont les biches perdent progressivement leur ambivalence et se féminisent à la fin de la période. Scholarship on Pentecostal potential and practice forms a significant part of the debate on religion and development, not least when the focus is on sub-Saharan Africa. Yet in this debate African Pentecostal migrant communities have scarcely been represented. The article focuses on two such communities in South Africa, arguing that they may be regarded as developmental agents in the context of racialized xenophobia, even if they do not portray themselves as such. The argument is based on ethnographic fieldwork and shaped (...) through employing the concept of transformational development that centers on restoring relationships. The article concludes that the two communities – living in a context affected by racialized xenophobia – contribute meaningfully towards restoring relationships between people and God, one's relationship with oneself, relationships within the church community as well as relationships between the church community and the neighborhood. This article explores Simone de Beauvoir's conceptualization of childhood and its importance for her existentialist thought. Beauvoir's theorization of childhood, I argue, offers a sophisticated portrayal of the child and of the adult–child relationship: the child is not a normal ‘other’ for the adult, but what I call a temporal other, perceived by adults as an ambiguous being; in turn, childhood is conceptualized as the origin of the ambiguity of adulthood. This foregrounding of childhood has important implications for Beauvoir's existentialism, (...) in particular regarding her ethics. Through the adult–child relationship, her vision of an ethical relation to otherness emerges — one which foregrounds both the violence and the mutual liberation involved in encounters with the other. The everydayness of benders reflecting the physical properties of their elements reminds the authors of the work of the late Jicarilla Apache philosopher V.F. Cordova. Cordova describes “bounded space” as a land base defined by geographic features such as mountains, rivers, deserts, lakes, oceans, and canyons. At the beginning of each Avatar: the Last Airbender ( ATLA ) episode, the audience is reminded: “Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony”. The sequence shows four individuals bending the water, earth, (...) fire, and air elements. The specific bounded spaces of the respective nations are reflected in their people and their benders. The ATLA universe provides narratives that point to Indigenous intergenerational ways of knowing. Within the ATLA universe, the authors witness regular connections with the spirit realm or spirit world. Many Indigenous scholars have explored these connections to the “spirit world” as understood in ATLA. (shrink)

What does it mean for a child to fulfil his or her potential? This article explores the contexts and implications of the much-used concept of potential in educational discourses. We claim that many of the popular, political and educational uses of the term in relation to childhood have a problematic blind spot: interpersonality, and the necessary coexistence for the concept to be receivable of all children’s ‘potentials’. Rather than advocating abandoning the term—a futile gesture given its emotive force—we argue that (...) the concept of children’s potential must be profoundly rethought to be workable as a philosophical notion in education. In an era marked by the unspoken assumption that ‘unlimited potential’ is always a good thing, we argue that it might be necessary to think about the limitations of the notion of individual potential; namely, the moment when it comes into contact with other people’s projects. We propose a conceptualisation of potential as the negotiated, situated, ever-changing creation of a group of individuals, in a process marked by conflict, and which remains essentially difficult. Developing a visual methodology based on the holographic philosophy of Nondual Śaiva Tantra, Techno-Tantrik Embodiment seeks to offer analogous holistic technologies that harness the power of the repressed and the taboo, to transform mind, body and environment. Archivolte, spectacle conçu comme un projet de casse du Musée le Corbusier de Tokyo et orchestré par le scénographe David Séchaud, tente de répondre à ces questions. L’œuvre ne tend plus ici dans un produit fini démontrant un savoir-faire, la scène devient davantage le lieu d’un « comment faire? ». La restitution des artefacts pillés lors des conquêtes coloniales ou abritées dans les musées « coloniaux » suscite des réactions antagoniques. Faut-il « tuer » le modèle du musée ethnographique, comme le préconise le président du Mali, ou bien purifier les collections témoins de pratiques génocidaires, en les radiographiant ou les cachant dans les réserves muséales, à l’abri des regards critiques? La complicité entre le pouvoir académique et le principe d’inaliénabilité de la propriété muséologique rendent le processus de restitution particulièrement (...) lent. Pour éviter que la restitution soit récupérée, des réponses rapides ont été conçues pour mieux correspondre aux imaginaires et pratiques de la jeunesse africaine: musée numérique, muséologie critique, institutions de culture populaire et restitution « en mode rapide ». Plutôt que de se focaliser sur des objets iconiques, la restitution en mode rapide cherche à revisiter l’ingéniosité traditionnelle précoloniale pour développer de nouvelles techniques, de nouvelles œuvres d’art et de nouveaux objets à finalité sociale et spirituelle. Hay un gesto performativo de Nietzsche que produce el tránsito de una comunidad humana a una comunidad posthumana: cuando rompe en llanto abrazado al cuello de un caballo, como pasaje en acto del rechazo a la machina animata cartesiana y la pérdida de soberanía sobre su persona. Ese gesto expresa un acontecimiento en la historia del pensamiento filosófico. Nietzsche funda una comunidad a contrapelo de la del rebaño y los iguales. El rechazo de la machina animata cartesiana es el rechazo (...) de la reducción del ser humano a esa cámara oscura en la cual se ha alojado y encerrado: la consciencia. Nos aventuramos con Nietzsche a pensar la posibilidad de una comunidad no humana. Esto supone adentrase en la voz de un solitario que hace comunidad al decir «nosotros», un nosotros del cual él es el primero, que también es nombrado como un «fantasma del futuro», que anuncia una nueva relación tanto con los otros vivientes animales como consigo mismo. L’objet de l’article est de discuter de méthodes d’observation et d’interprétation des arbitrages résidentiels de salariés face à la flexibilité de leur emploi. Après avoir montré les limites de l’investigation quantitative sur cette question, la réflexion s’appuiera sur les résultats d’une enquête qualitative auprès de salariés confrontés, en 2000, à la fermeture de leur usine et à sa délocalisation à 200 km de leur domicile. Dans ce type de situations, ce n’est pas la seule mobilité résidentielle suscitée par l’emploi qu’il (...) s’agit d’étudier mais bien les arbitrages entre, à la fois, mobilité et non-mobilité. Cette posture rend ainsi possible l’identification du caractère multidimensionnel de ces choix : les logiques professionnelles n’expliquent pas tout, les logiques familiales et résidentielles jouent un rôle important dans le refus de déménager ou l’aménagement d’un système de double résidence. Cette approche permet d’appréhender en quoi ces décisions reproduisent, voire aggravent les inégalités sociales, tout en incluant les possibilités de stratégies résidentielles et spatiales.Based on the results from a qualitative enquiry of employees faced with the closure of their industrial plant, in 2000, and its further relocation 200 km away, this paper provides an approach to residential choices in a context of professional uncertainty and economic constraints. In this type of situations, it is not only residential mobility which is at stake but also the choice between mobility and non-mobility. This method also enables the analysis of the multidimensional characteristic of these choices : professional considerations alone do not explain everything, family life and residential considerations play a role in choosing « residential anchoring » or dual residence. This approach shows how the choices made reproduce or even worsen social unequalities, whilst including spatial and residential strategies. (shrink)

Crítica que es comprendida como una forma de pensamiento que se cuestiona a sí mismo y que considera no sólo los límites y posibilidades de la razón, sino también la realidad humana e histórica de un sujeto que se constituye en un "nosotros". La filosofía, así entendida, es un saber de vida. La función utópica se presenta como tarea para este saber de conjetura y para una (...) filosofía que sirve a la vida. Roig devuelve con ello el valor epistémico que tiene el plus lo axiológico, no verificable como hipótesis científica. Arturo Roig inscribes the exercise of philosophizing in the geography of its critical function. Critique that is understood as a form of thought that questions itself and considers not only the limits and possibilities of reason, but also the human and historical reality of a subject that becomes a "we". Philosophy, thus understood, is a knowledge of life. The utopian function arises as a task for this knowledge of conjecture that serves to life. The following text tries to approach the relation between the globalization-mondialisation process and certain conceptions of history witch are solidary with them. For the previous thing, it appeals to the reflections realized by Marc Abélès in Politics of the survival and Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri in Empire. In both analyses it is possible to perceive the importance that takes the history as a support of the global processes that intermingle the politics, the economy and culture, processes that seem to advance according to the course that history has, and they allow to give in addition reference of sense to the subjects in his processes of identity and of individuation. Se han seleccionado algunos textos de Arturo Roig con la preocupación de responder interrogantes vinculados con las herramientas hermenéuticas y metodológicas propias del autor en su labor como filósofo e historiador de las ideas. Si se ha determinado la posición de Roig frente al análisis del discurso, sus estudios y su crítica al estructuralismo, es para comprender una metodología que no se queda en el análisis formal de los discursos, sino que (...) atiende al carácter histórico y situado de los mismos. También permite identificar e interrogar sobre las relaciones entre lenguaje y sujeto, discurso e ideología, y la historicidad en el pensamiento latinoamericano mediante el abordaje de una historia episódica, antípodas de una idea de continuidad y despliegue lineal. Esto permite comprender el vínculo con una antropología de la emergencia, cuyo carácter final es el de ponerse a sí mismo como valioso.This article presents an overview of several readings. Some of Arturo Roig's writings have been selected with the aim of answering questions related to the hermeneutical and methodological tools proper to the author in his work as philosopher and historian of ideas. If Roig's position facing the analysis of discourse, his studies and his criticism of structuralism has been determined in this article, it is simply to understand a methodology that does not end with the formal analysis of discourses but that rather considers the historical settings of such discourses. The approach also allows for an identification and interrogation of the relationship between language and subject, discourse and ideology, and historicity in Latin American thought, through an episodical history, the antipodes of an idea of continuity and lineal course. This makes it possible to understand the bond with an anthropology of the emergency, whose final character is to place itself as valuable. (shrink)

Este ensayo recupera aspectos del pensamiento monista y materialista de la filósofa y poeta Margaret Cavendish que, en el siglo XVII, debatía con la tradición filosófica que impuso su visión dualista y mecanicista. Contrariamente a lo que trazó la filosofía cartesiana mediante el recurso al cogito y a una reversión del dualismo entre mente y cuerpo, los textos de Cavendish nos permiten acercarnos a otra concepción del mundo en el que la materia, eterna e infinita, tiene propiedades mentales. Cavendish propone (...) una perspectiva relacional de la materia, y aborda la cuestión de la vida y la muerte con una visión no antagónica y de continuidad de lo vivo. Como la vida y el conocimiento están en todas las partes de la materia, el conocimiento pertenece también a otros animales y vegetales, y no sólo a nuestra especie. La recuperación del materialismo de Cavendish nos permite inscribirla en una genealogía diferente a la de la época, cuya forma masculina y humanista se funda en el dominio de la naturaleza, en la que se dibuja una epistemología a favor de la vida, y por eso de carácter femenino. En cuanto la cuestión del género, no debe considerarse solamente desde el punto de vista de cómo se constituyeron varones y mujeres en las prácticas científicas y discursos filosóficos de la tradición moderna, sino en cuanto estas prácticas y discursos encubrieron los deseos, la corporalidad, el amor, el cuidado, y la relación con los otros vivientes. En sus últimos años Foucault dedicó su trabajo a los aspectos de una ética de sí en las relaciones entre sujeto y verdad en la Antigüedad Clásica y Grecorromana, y presentada como una “estética de la existencia”. Este es un giro en la obra de Foucault hacia el plano de la subjetivación, es decir hacia los procesos mediante los cuales el sujeto se constituye a sí mismo, en una relación de sí consigo. Abordaremos esta cuestión tomando la noción de bios (...) como bisagra entre sus estudios sobre el biopoder y sus nuevos trabajos en torno a las tekhne tou biou o artes de la vida, en los que se apunta el estudio sobre las técnicas de sí. Para ello, será necesario comprender las modificaciones que Foucault introduce en Historia de la sexualidad II. Este desplazamiento problemático y metodológico, lejos de ser una salida estetizante a la cuestión del sujeto es, por el contrario, un modo de dar respuesta a la inquietud política de Foucault relativa al presente. Esbozamos a partir de esto último un posible análisis respecto de los modos de constitución del sujeto moral en nuestra contemporaneidad. (shrink)

Y antes de intentar una respuesta, pensar qué es la filosofía, si ella tiene límites que nos indicarían cuándo un diálogo, una práctica, una reflexión, es filosófica y cuándo no.

Pendant la Grande Guerre, les millions de lettres échangées entre les soldats mobilisés et leurs conjointes permettent d’observer les rapports conjugaux qui se recomposent, se nouent ou se dénouent alors. Elles constituent des sources précieuses pour étudier la place des émotions dans la fabrication de nouvelles relations à distance. Cet article interroge le genre des émotions déployées dans les relations conjugales à distance, et suit trois objectifs : questionner la façon dont s’expriment et se décrivent, en commun ou différemment, les (...) émotions masculines et féminines ; mesurer de quelle façon le conflit, épreuve sentimentale pour les couples séparés, trouble l’expression des émotions ou les réinvente ; comprendre enfin de quelle façon les émotions – exprimées ou tues dans l’interaction épistolaire – jouent un rôle dans le ré-assignement des rôles sexués imposés dès le début du conflit. The ambition of “scientific creationism” is to prove that science actually confirms religion. This is especially true in the case of Muslim creationism, which adopts a reasoning of a syllogistic type: divine revelation is truth; good science confirms truth; divine revelation is henceforth scientifically proven. Harun Yahya is a prominent Muslim “creationist” whose website hosts many texts and documentary films, among which “Evidence of the true faith in historical sources”. This is a small audiovisual production which, starting from some archeological (...) files, seeks to demonstrate that Qur’an truth precedes science but is equally proven by it. In this paper, we examine the organization of the scientific and religious argumentative repertoires and, in particular, what in each of them is taken as evidence and gets access to an authoritative status. It leads us to show how much this type of Muslim creationism constitutes a kind of scientism. (shrink)

Many biobanks have left their traditional home of a small refrigerator in a laboratory to reach the unprecedented proportion of large, sophisticated storage centers containing DNA samples from whole populations. As we turn our attention to research on complex diseases and show great interest in human genetic variation and genetic epidemiology, we need to base our research not only on the DNA of small family cohorts, (...) but on larger sample collections, coupled with geographic location, genealogical information, and environmental and medical data. Population genetic research projects are underway around the world. Setting up such large-scale population biobanks is a challenge for any researcher. Population genetic research projects raise legal, ethical, and social issues that need to be addressed properly in order to maintain the trust of the population, an absolute requirement for the success of such research endeavour. Introduction: Burnout, inertia, meltdown, and shutdown have been identified as important parts of some autistic people’s lives. This study builds on our previous work that offered early academic descriptions of these phenomena, based on the perspectives of autistic adults.Objectives: This study aimed to explore the unique knowledge and insights of eight autistic children and youth to extend and refine our earlier description of burnout, inertia, and meltdown, with additional exploration of shutdown. We also aimed to explore how these youth cope (...) with these phenomena and what others around them do that make things better or worse, with a hope to glean knowledge to design better supports.Methods: One-to-one interviews were conducted with eight children and youth, who shared their experience with BIMS. To match individual communication strengths of children and youth, we took a flexible approach to interviews, allowing for augmentative communication systems and use of visual images to support verbal interviews, as needed. We conducted a reflexive, inductive thematic analysis, using an iterative process of coding, collating, reviewing, and mapping themes.Findings: Our analysis has identified that these youth describe BIMS as a multi-faceted experience involving emotional, cognitive and physical components. Moreover, these multifaceted experiences are often misunderstood by neurotypical adults, which contributes to inadequate support in managing BIMS. Of the four experiences, these youth identified meltdowns as most common.Conclusion: By gaining first-hand perspectives, we have identified novel insights into BIMS and developed a more holistic understanding of these phenomena. These youths’ descriptions of supportive strategies for BIMS stress the importance of compassion and collaboration from trusted adults. This new knowledge will provide a foundation for how to better support autistic children and youth. Further research is required to develop an understanding of BIMS, especially with respect to how it is experienced by children and youth. Future research should leverage the insights and experiential knowledge of autistic children and youth to co-design support tool for BIMS. (shrink)

Background Providing understandable information to patients is necessary to achieve the aims of the Informed Consent process: respecting and promoting patients’ autonomy and protecting patients from harm. In recent decades, new, primarily digital technologies have been used to apply and test innovative formats of Informed Consent. We conducted a systematic review to explore the impact of using digital tools for Informed Consent in both clinical research and in clinical practice. Understanding, satisfaction and participation were compared for digital tools versus the (...) non-digital Informed Consent process. Methods We searched for studies on available electronic databases, including Pubmed, EMBASE, and Cochrane. Studies were identified using specific Mesh-terms/keywords. We included studies, published from January 2012 to October 2020, that focused on the use of digital Informed Consent tools for clinical research, or clinical procedures. Digital interventions were defined as interventions that used multimedia or audio–video to provide information to patients. We classified the interventions into 3 different categories: video only, non-interactive multimedia, and interactive multimedia. Results Our search yielded 19,579 publications. After title and abstract screening 100 studies were retained for full-text analysis, of which 73 publications were included. Studies examined interactive multimedia, non-interactive multimedia, and videos, and most studies were conducted on adults. Innovations in consent were tested for clinical/surgical procedures and clinical research. For research IC, 21 outcomes were explored, with a positive effect on at least one of the studied outcomes being observed in 8/12 studies. For clinical/surgical procedures 49 outcomes were explored, and 21/26 studies reported a positive effect on at least one of the studied outcomes. Conclusions Digital technologies for informed consent were not found to negatively affect any of the outcomes, and overall, multimedia tools seem desirable. Multimedia tools indicated a higher impact than videos only. Presence of a researcher may potentially enhance efficacy of different outcomes in research IC processes. Studies were heterogeneous in design, making evaluation of impact challenging. Robust study design including standardization is needed to conclusively assess impact. (shrink)

Community consultation is increasingly recommended, and in some cases, required by ethical review boards for research that involves higher levels of ethical risk such as international research and research with vulnerable populations. In designing a randomised control trial of a mental health intervention using a wait list control, we consulted the community where the research would be undertaken prior to finalising the study protocol. This anniversary issue responds seventy years later. In recent years, new critical and theoretical approaches have reconfigured existentialism and refreshed perspectives on the philosophical, literary, and stylistic movement. This special issue restores the writers, thinkers, and texts of the movement to their subversive strength. The atomistic theory, in the argument against astrology in Book VIII of the Recognitiones, corresponds very little to the thought of Epicurus, even though the writer of the novel claims to refute him. Scholars explain this discrepancy as a misunderstanding of Greek philosophy by the author of the Recognitiones. However, the theory refuted in Book VIII shares many similarities with the cosmology of the Syrian philosopher Bardaisan. The latter gives an important place to atoms and it is possible that the (...) rejection of the Epicurean system is directed against astral determinism, accepted in part by Bardaisan. The discourse of Nicetas would attempt to overthrow the Bardaisanian idea that inequalities among men are the result of the power of the stars. While the Recognitiones are in agreement with the Syrian philosopher who thinks that the stars have no effect on the free will of man - reproducing his thought in Book IX - they are opposed to the idea that the inequalities among men are the result of astral fatalism. The synthesis of Epicurus and Bardaisan would aim at refuting all determinism, be it Epicurean or Bardaisanian. (shrink)
