In philosophical logic necessity is usually conceived as a sentential operator rather than as a predicate. An intensional sentential operator does not allow one to express quantified statements such as 'There are necessary a posteriori propositions' or 'All laws of physics are necessary' in first-order logic in a straightforward way, while they are readily formalized if necessity is formalized by a predicate. Replacing the operator conception of necessity by the predicate conception, however, causes various problems and forces one to reject (...) many philosophical accounts involving necessity that are based on the use of operator modal logic. We argue that the expressive power of the predicate account can be restored if a truth predicate is added to the language of first-order modal logic, because the predicate 'is necessary' can then be replaced by 'is necessarily true'. We prove a result showing that this substitution is technically feasible. To this end we provide partial possible-worlds semantics for the language with a predicate of necessity and perform the reduction of necessities to necessary truths. The technique applies also to many other intensional notions that have been analysed by means of modal operators. (shrink)

Since James defined emotion as consciousness of bodily reactions and Cannon and others detailed the nature of these reactions, there has been an increasing tendency among behaviorists to equate emotions with visceral reactions and to neglect some of the genetic and adaptive aspects of emotion which had been discussed by Darwin.

BackgroundAccurate reporting on sex and gender in health research is integral to ensuring that health interventions are safe and effective. In Canada and internationally, governments, research organizations, journal editors, and health agencies have called for more inclusive research, provision of sex-disaggregated data, and the integration of sex and gender analysis throughout the research process. Sex and gender analysis is generally defined as an approach for considering how and why different subpopulations (e.g., of diverse genders, ages, and social locations) may experience (...) health conditions and interventions in different or similar ways.The objective of this study was to assess the extent and nature of reporting about sex and/or gender, including whether sex and gender analysis (SGA) was carried out in a sample of Canadian randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with human participants.MethodsWe searched MEDLINE from 01 January 2013 to 23 July 2014 using a validated filter for identification of RCTs, combined with terms related to Canada. Two reviewers screened the search results to identify the first 100 RCTs that were either identified in the trial publication as funded by a Canadian organization or which had a first or last author based in Canada. Data were independently extracted by two people from 10% of the RCTs during an initial training period; once agreement was reached on this sample, the remainder of the data extraction was completed by one person and verified by a second.ResultsThe search yielded 1433 records. We screened 256 records to identify 100 RCTs which met our eligibility criteria. The median sample size of the RCTs was 107 participants (range 12–6085). While 98% of studies described the demographic composition of their participants by sex, only 6% conducted a subgroup analysis across sex and 4% reported sex-disaggregated data. No article defined “sex” and/or “gender.” No publication carried out a comprehensive sex and gender analysis.ConclusionsFindings highlight poor uptake of sex and gender considerations in the Canadian RCT context and underscore the need for better articulated guidance on sex and gender analysis to improve reporting of evidence, inform policy development, and guide future research. Reflection Principles are commonly thought to produce only strong axioms of infinity consistent with V = L. It would be desirable to have some notion of strong reflection to remedy this, and we have proposed Global Reflection Principles based on a somewhat Cantorian view of the universe. Such principles justify the kind of cardinals needed for, inter alia , Woodin’s Ω-Logic.

We show that assuming modest large cardinals, there is a definable class of ordinals, closed and unbounded beneath every uncountable cardinal, so that for any closed and unbounded subclasses $P, Q, {\langle L[P],\in,P \rangle }$ and ${\langle L[Q],\in,Q \rangle }$ possess the same reals, satisfy the Generalised Continuum Hypothesis, and moreover are elementarily equivalent. Examples of such P are Card, the class of uncountable cardinals, I the uniform indiscernibles, or for any n the class $C^{n}{=_{{\operatorname {df}}}}\{ \lambda \, | \, (...) V_{\lambda } \prec _{{\Sigma }_{n}}V\}$ ; moreover the theory of such models is invariant under ZFC-preserving extensions. They also all have a rich structure satisfying many of the usual combinatorial principles and a definable wellorder of the reals. The inner model constructed using definability in the language augmented by the Härtig quantifier is thus also characterized. (shrink)

We have conducted an experimental study of V-type electromagnetically induced transparency in sodium. Its principles are elucidated by a simple model. Measurements show decreased fluorescence and absorption depending on the detuning of the driving and probe fields, which is in agreement with the results of numerical simulation.

We consider the following question of Kunen: Does Con(ZFC + ∃M a transitive inner model and a non-trivial elementary embedding j: M $\longrightarrow$ V) imply Con (ZFC + ∃ a measurable cardinal)? We use core model theory to investigate consequences of the existence of such a j: M → V. We prove, amongst other things, the existence of such an embedding implies that the core model K is a model of "there exists a proper class of almost Ramsey cardinals". Conversely, (...) if On is Ramsey, then such a j, M are definable. We construe this as a negative answer to the question above. Let κ be a cardinal, and let H κ be the class of sets of hereditary cardinality less than κ ; let τ (κ) > κ be the height of the smallest transitive admissible set containing every element of {κ}∪H κ . We show that a ZFC-definable notion of long unfoldability, a generalisation of weak compactness, implies in the core model K, that the mouse order restricted to H κ is as long as τ. (It is known that some weak (...) large cardinal property is necessary for the latter to hold.) In other terms we delimit its strength as follows: Theorem Con(ZFC+ω2-Π 1 1-Determinacy) ⇒ ⇒Con(ZFC+V=K+∃ a long unfoldable cardinal ⇒ ⇒Con(ZFC+∀X(X # exists) + ‘‘ $\forall D \subseteq \omega_1 D$ is universally Baire ⇔ ∃r∈R(D∈L(r)))’’, and this is set-generically absolute). We isolate a notion of ω-closed cardinal which is weaker than an ω1-Erd\ os cardinal, and show that this bounds the first long unfoldable: Theorem Let κ be ω -closed. We prove that a form of the $Erd\H{o}s$ property (consistent with $V = L\lbrack H_{\omega_2}\rbrack$ and strictly weaker than the Weak Chang's Conjecture at ω1), together with Bounded Martin's Maximum implies that Woodin's principle $\psi_{AC}$ holds, and therefore 2ℵ0 = ℵ2. We also prove that $\psi_{AC}$ implies that every function $f: \omega_1 \rightarrow \omega_1$ is bounded by some canonical function on a club and use this to produce a model of the Bounded Semiproper Forcing Axiom in which Bounded Martin's Maximum (...) fails. We investigate the set S 2 of "quickly sharped" reals: \begin{align*}S_2 &= \{x \mid x \in M, M \text{the} <^\ast-\text{least mouse} \not\in L\lbrack x\rbrack\} \\ &= \{x \mid L\lbrack x\rbrack \models "V = K"\},\\ \end{align*} in the manner of [K] defining a natural hierarchy and quasi-hierarchy of constructibility degrees and identifying their termination points.

We show that, like singular cardinals, and weakly compact cardinals, Jensen's core model K for measures of order zero [4] calculates correctly the successors of Jónsson cardinals, assuming $O^{Sword}$ does not exist. Namely, if $\kappa$ is a Jónsson cardinal then $\kappa^+ = \kappa^{+K}$ , provided that there is no non-trivial elementary embedding $j:K \longrightarrow K$ . There are a number of related results in ZFC concerning $\cal{P}(\kappa)$ in V and inner models, for $\kappa$ a Jónsson or singular cardinal.

We show that the predicate “x is the power set of y” is ‐definable, if V = L[E] is an extender model constructed from a coherent sequences of extenders, provided that there is no inner model with a Woodin cardinal. Here is a predicate true of just the infinite cardinals. From this we conclude: the validities of second order logic are reducible to, the set of validities of the Härtig quantifier logic. Further we show that if no L[E] model has (...) a cardinal strong up to one of its ℵ‐fixed points, and, the Löwenheim number of this logic, is less than the least weakly inaccessible δ, then (i) is a limit of measurable cardinals of K, and (ii) the Weak Covering Lemma holds at δ. Unlängst ist Band II,12 der von Reinhard Lauth, Erich Fuchs, Peter K. Schneider und Ives Radrizzani unter Mitwirkung von Hans Georg von Manz edierten kritischen Ausgabe des Werks von Johann Gottlieb Fichte in der Fichte-Gesamtausgabe der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften erschienen. Erscheinungsjahr ist 1999, Erscheinungsort wie zuvor Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt bei Frommann-Holzboog. Der Band enthält Fichtes philosophische Leistung aus dem Jahr 1811. Primär zu nennen sind »Die Thatsachen des Bewussstseyns«, welche Fichte als Einleitung in die Wissenschaftslehre im Wintersemester 1810/11 gelesen hat, (...) die Wissenschaftslehre von 1811, welche Fichte vom 30. Januar bis 6. April vorgetragen hatte, sowie die populären »Vorlesungen über die Bestimmung des Gelehrten«, von denen anzunehmen ist, Fichte habe sie im Frühjahr 1811 gelesen. Fichte hat »Ueber die Bestimmung des Gelehrten« im Verlauf seiner Lehrtätigkeit dreimal im Rahmen seiner Vorlesungszyklen vorgetragen: ein erstes Mal zu Beginn seiner Lehrtätigkeit in Jena 1794/95. Hiervon sind fünf Vorlesungen in GA I,3 von 1966 wiedergegeben, eine weitere Gruppe um das Thema »Ueber den Unterschied des Geistes und des Buchstabens in der Philosophie« findet sich in GA II,3. Ein zweites Mal las Fichte »Ueber die Bestimmung des Gelehrten, und seine Erscheinungen im Gebiete der Freiheit« vom 25. Mai bis wohl Ende August 1805 in Erlangen. Dieser Zyklus umfaßt zehn Vorlesungen und findet sich in Band I,8 der Akademie-Ausgabe. Ein drittes Mal las Fichte »Ueber die Bestimmung des Gelehrten« wohl im Frühjahr/sommer 1811. Die genauen Daten sind nicht bekannt. Reinhard Lauth verweist im Vorwort zum Text auf ein längeres Schreiben des Studenten August Twesten, vom 28. Mai 1811, worin dieser berichtet, er höre bei Fichte »Reden über das Wesen des Gelehrten«, sowie auf die »Miszellen für die Neueste Weltkunde« vom 25. Mai 1811, wo es heißt: »Unsere Universität hat mit diesem Semester bedeutenden Zuwachs erhalten: man zählt jetzt beinahe vierhundert Studenten, grösstentheils Mediziner. Hufeland lieset über seine Makrobiotik, und Fichte über die Bestimmung des Gelehrten«. Beispiel für künstlerische Tätigkeiten pflegen für Fichte die der Dichter, der Maler, der Bildhauer zu sein, in den Vorlesungen über die Bestimmung des Gelehrten ist es ebenfalls die der Bildhauer. In den Vorlesungen von 1811 hingegen ist es der Musiker, welcher mit dem Denkkünstler verglichen wird: »so jemand in der Musik es zur Meisterschaft bringen will, so bedarf er dazu zu allererst der innern Erregbarkeit durch die Form des Uebersinnlichen, wodurch seine Kunst erst zur Kunst wird«. Nun verweist Reinhard Lauth darauf, daß Fichte vom 4. bis 30. August 1811 in Teplitz zur Badekur weilte, wo vom 4. August bis zum 18. September auch Ludwig van Beethoven sich aufhielt und möglicherweise Fichte musikalisch beeindruckte. Daß es zu einer persönlichen Begegnung gekommen sei, läßt sich jedoch dokumentarisch nicht nachweisen. Als Einführung in die Wissenschaftslehre las Fichte im Wintersemester 1810/11 »Ueber das Studium der Philosophie« und »Ueber die Thatsachen des Bewusstseyns«. Wie Reinhard Lauth rekonstruiert hat, hatte Fichte vom 22. bis 26. Oktober 1810 »Ueber das Studium der Philosophie« gelesen. Der Vorlesungstext ist nicht erhalten. Vom 29. Oktober 1810 bis 14. Januar 1811 trug Fichte erstmals »Ueber die Thatsachen des Bewusstseyns« vor. Diese Vorlesung übernahm, wie Reinhard Lauth im Vorwort erläutert, in der Spätphase Fichtes zusammen mit den Ausführungen über »Transzendentale Logik« die Rolle der Jenaer und Erlanger Vorlesungen über Logik und Metaphysik. Sie sollte auf die genetische Darstellung der Phänomene des Bewußtseins in der WL vorbereiten. Durch Fichte von Beginn an zum Druck bestimmt, erschien die Vorlesungsreihe erstmals nach seinem Tod 1817 in der Cottaischen Buchhandlung. 1845 veröffentlichte auch Immanuel Hermann Fichte in Band 2, S. 534–691 der von ihm herausgegebenen »sämmtlichen Werke« die »Thatsachen« von 1810/11 ein zweites Mal, allerdings nicht ohne unausgewiesene Veränderung ihrer Gliederung, da, wie er ausführte: »das Manuscript, wiewohl ursprünglich für den Druck bestimmt, dennoch die letzte Hand und Feile vom Verfasser nicht erhalten hatte«. Band II,12 der Akademie-Ausgabe enthält nun auch erstmals eine gedruckte Veröffentlichung der WL 1811. Immanuel Hermann Fichte hatte sie in seiner Ausgabe von des Vaters Werken nicht berücksichtigt, ja, nicht einmal erwähnt. Die von fünfundsiebzig Hörern besuchte Vorlesung hatte am 30. Januar begonnen und wurde nach 25 Vorlesungsstunden am 6. April 1811 abgeschlossen. Da sie sorgfältiger ausgeschrieben ist als die späteren und nicht zuletzt als die von 1810, vermutet Reinhard Lauth - gestützt auch auf das Zeugnis von Fichtes Hörer August Twesten –, daß Fichte an eine Veröffentlichung gedacht habe. Twesten, selbst kein schlechter Kopf, hatte 1810 bis 1812 in Berlin studiert. Die These einer geplanten Veröffentlichung wird unterstützt durch das Faktum, daß Fichte schon zum Abschluß seines Vortrags der Wissenschaftslehre 1810 für seine Hörer »Die Wissenschaftslehre in ihrem Umriss« publiziert hatte und daß auch die »Thatsachen des Bewusstseyns« von 1810/11 zum Druck bestimmt waren. Auch ist die WL 1811 sehr viel ausgefeilter und sorgsamer ausgearbeitet als die vorangehende WL 1810, die ein bloßes Vorlesungsskelett darstellt, teilweise aus bloßen Stichworten bestehend. Es gibt somit berechtigten Anlaß zu vermuten, daß Fichte wieder an eine breitere Öffentlichkeit dringen wollte. Zum Inhalt der Wissenschaftslehre von 1811 wäre zu sagen, daß sie von drei Grundthemen dominiert wird: von dem der »Freiheit«, dem der »Fünffachheit« möglicher Standpunkte und dem des »Schemas«. Obgleich „Freiheit“ schon gedankliches Zentrum des frühen Fichte ist, so kommt es doch in seinen ersten Veröffentlichungen so wenig zum Ausdruck, daß Fichte sich in seinem Brief an Reinhold vom 8. Januar 1800 aus einer Position der Defensive zu betonen veranlaßt sieht: »Mein System ist vom Anfange bis zum Ende nur eine Analyse des Begriffs der Freiheit«. Schon in der WL 1801/02 spielt dieser Begriff dann eine bedeutende Rolle. In der WL 1811 hingegen wird der Begriff der Freiheit zentral und zwar im Zusammenhang mit einem zweiten: dem Begriff des „Reflexes“. Es gilt: Die absolute Sichvollziehung der Freiheit bringt das Faktum des Wissens zum Vorschein. Das Wissen führt - - seinen Reflex bei sich: es ist ein sich als Denken verstehenden Denken. Erst so entsteht Bewußtsein. Denn Denken ohne Sich-Sehen wäre ein Wissen ohne Licht, ein Bewußtsein ohne Gehalt. Von „Reflex“ war auch schon in der WL 1801/02 im Zusammenhang mit der »intellektuellen Anschauung« die Rede: »Der Sprung durch das absolute, der Reflex, das für ich seyn desselben, ist in der Mitte«. Dagegen wird die »intellektuelle Anschauung« - noch zentral in der WL 1810 - in der WL 1811 überhaupt nicht mehr genannt. Sie wird verdrängt durch den „Reflex“. In der Wissenschaftslehre 1811 findet also eine gewissen »Intellektualisierung« statt: Es gibt nicht mehr einerseits Anschauung, andererseits Denken, wie in den frühen Fassungen der Wissenschaftslehre, sondern es ist der Verstand, der »Bilder« entwirft. Sie sollte auf die genetische Darstellung der Phänomene des Bewußtseins in der WL vorbereiten. Durch Fichte von Beginn an zum Druck bestimmt, erschien die Vorlesungsreihe erstmals nach seinem Tod 1817 in der Cottaischen Buchhandlung. 1845 veröffentlichte auch Immanuel Hermann Fichte in Band 2, S. 534–691 der von ihm herausgegebenen »sämmtlichen Werke« die »Thatsachen« von 1810/11 ein zweites Mal, allerdings nicht ohne unausgewiesene Veränderung ihrer Gliederung, da, wie er ausführte: »das Manuscript, wiewohl ursprünglich für den Druck bestimmt, dennoch die letzte Hand und Feile vom Verfasser nicht erhalten hatte«. Band II,12 der Akademie-Ausgabe enthält nun auch erstmals eine gedruckte Veröffentlichung der WL 1811. Immanuel Hermann Fichte hatte sie in seiner Ausgabe von des Vaters Werken nicht berücksichtigt, ja, nicht einmal erwähnt. Die von fünfundsiebzig Hörern besuchte Vorlesung hatte am 30. Januar begonnen und wurde nach 25 Vorlesungsstunden am 6. April 1811 abgeschlossen. Da sie sorgfältiger ausgeschrieben ist als die späteren und nicht zuletzt als die von 1810, vermutet Reinhard Lauth - gestützt auch auf das Zeugnis von Fichtes Hörer August Twesten –, daß Fichte an eine Veröffentlichung gedacht habe. Twesten, selbst kein schlechter Kopf, hatte 1810 bis 1812 in Berlin studiert. Die These einer geplanten Veröffentlichung wird unterstützt durch das Faktum, daß Fichte schon zum Abschluß seines Vortrags der Wissenschaftslehre 1810 für seine Hörer »Die Wissenschaftslehre in ihrem Umriss« publiziert hatte und daß auch die »Thatsachen des Bewusstseyns« von 1810/11 zum Druck bestimmt waren. Auch ist die WL 1811 sehr viel ausgefeilter und sorgsamer ausgearbeitet als die vorangehende WL 1810, die ein bloßes Vorlesungsskelett darstellt, teilweise aus bloßen Stichworten bestehend. Es gibt somit berechtigten Anlaß zu vermuten, daß Fichte wieder an eine breitere Öffentlichkeit dringen wollte. Zum Inhalt der Wissenschaftslehre von 1811 wäre zu sagen, daß sie von drei Grundthemen dominiert wird: von dem der »Freiheit«, dem der »Fünffachheit« möglicher Standpunkte und dem des »Schemas«. Obgleich „Freiheit“ schon gedankliches Zentrum des frühen Fichte ist, so kommt es doch in seinen ersten Veröffentlichungen so wenig zum Ausdruck, daß Fichte sich in seinem Brief an Reinhold vom 8. Januar 1800 aus einer Position der Defensive zu betonen veranlaßt sieht: »Mein System ist vom Anfange bis zum Ende nur eine Analyse des Begriffs der Freiheit«. Schon in der WL 1801/02 spielt dieser Begriff dann eine bedeutende Rolle. In der WL 1811 hingegen wird der Begriff der Freiheit zentral und zwar im Zusammenhang mit einem zweiten: dem Begriff des „Reflexes“. Es gilt: Die absolute Sichvollziehung der Freiheit bringt das Faktum des Wissens zum Vorschein. Das Wissen führt - - seinen Reflex bei sich: es ist ein sich als Denken verstehenden Denken. Erst so entsteht Bewußtsein. Denn Denken ohne Sich-Sehen wäre ein Wissen ohne Licht, ein Bewußtsein ohne Gehalt. Von „Reflex“ war auch schon in der WL 1801/02 im Zusammenhang mit der »intellektuellen Anschauung« die Rede: »Der Sprung durch das absolute, der Reflex, das für ich seyn desselben, ist in der Mitte«. Dagegen wird die »intellektuelle Anschauung« - noch zentral in der WL 1810 - in der WL 1811 überhaupt nicht mehr genannt. Sie wird verdrängt durch den „Reflex“. In der Wissenschaftslehre 1811 findet also eine gewissen »Intellektualisierung« statt: Es gibt nicht mehr einerseits Anschauung, andererseits Denken, wie in den frühen Fassungen der Wissenschaftslehre, sondern es ist der Verstand, der »Bilder« entwirft. Which Books by Teichmüller Did Nietzsche Have Access to? An Attempt at a Reconstruction. The question of which books by Gustav Teichmüller Nietzsche had available has not been satisfactorily clarified to this day. Drawing on sources not considered so far, including the correspondence between Teichmüller and Franz Overbeck and a list that Teichmüller kept about copies of his writings he had sent to colleagues and friends found in his Nachlass, I conclude that Nietzsche only had four books by Teichmüller at (...) his disposal (apart from the opusculum Ueber die Reihenfolge der platonischen Dialoge). Three of these were loans: Aristotelische Forschungen I from the University Library of Basel in the summer semester of 1870, Die Wirkliche und die scheinbare Welt, from Overbeck between late summer 1882 (at the earliest) and November 1885, and the Neue Studien zur Geschichte der Begriffe III also from Overbeck from October 1883 to November 1885. Only the Aristotelischen Forschungen II seem to have been Nietzsche’s personal property (since 1869). Although it is often assumed that Nietzsche also read other books by Teichmüller – e. g., the Studien zur Geschichte der Begriffe, the Neue Studien zur Geschichte der Begriffe II, and the two volumes of the Literarische Fehden im vierten Jahrhundert v. Chr. – they were most likely not available to Nietzsche. (shrink)

How do we know when we are investing wisely in security? Answering this question requires investigating what things are worth securing (and why); what threatens them; how best to protect them; and how to think about it. Is it possible to protect them? How best go about protecting them? What trade-offs are involved in allocating resources to security problems? This book responds to these questions by stripping down our preconceptions and rebuilding an understanding of security from the ground up on (...) the basis of a common-sense ontology and an explicit theory of value. It argues for a clear distinction between objective and subjective security threats, a non-anthropocentric understanding of security, and a particular hierarchy of security referents, looking closely at four in particular-the ecosphere, the state, culture, and individual human beings. The analysis will be of interest not only to students and scholars of International Relations, but also to practitioners. David A. This has been further complicated as a result of the increasing presence of the internet, digital communications and social media, all of which hold both promise and challenge. There are many aspects of crisis and disaster management, including communications, interoperability, leadership, and police responsibility. Risk identification and management are essential part of dealing with crises and disasters. There is (...) a significant threat to organizational reputation and public trust for any police or security organization that depends entirely on how that organization responds to a crisis or disaster. -/- This chapter examines Hurricane Katrina (2005) in the USA which caused large-scale damage to infrastructure and loss of life, and the response as handled by some government agencies. The management of crises and disasters is a cyclical process. It includes risk assessment, planning, preparation, mitigation and contingency, response, recovery, and finally, an evaluation. The core features, and the elements of an effective response, of a crisis or disaster, as well as the criticality of effective leadership are examined. Abstract -/- The Crisis and Disaster Management process (CDMP) is composed of several clearly defined phases. Strategic risk assessment; preparation and planning, effective response and recovery, and post-crisis evaluation. It is essential for those facing such threats to understand, appreciate, and implement the appropriate responses for each phase. Public service organizations, or PSOs, are increasingly charged with additional duties and responsibilities that historically were not part of their original purview. PSOs are currently forced to operate within an environment of increasing (...) political unrest and social chaos. Events of international magnitude now impact the domestic environment. These organizations must deal with negative media, hostile public backlash, increased scrutiny, and calls for greater accountability. Service organizations are currently faced with increasing political and social chaos, with widespread civil unrest, domestic and international threats of terrorism, human trafficking and illegal migration, public health emergencies, natural disasters, and diverse climate-related challenges. These conditions have fostered additional layers of responsibility to already overburdened first responders and their civil support partners. The consequences are significant. These previously mentioned burdens are further compounded by budgetary constraints, greater regulatory compliance, and organizational accountability. Listening for the sounds of silence: a nursing consideration of caring for the politically tortured In 1997 Amnesty International reported that 115 out of 251 countries surveyed practised torture on their citizens. Many of these victims have been forced to flee their country of origin and become refugees in the West, in countries such as Australia, Canada, the UK and the United States. However, torture itself remains an unspoken and covert problem. In addition to the obvious traumatic effects, it may (...) induce shame and dread on the part of the victim. It may be too terrifying and too painful to talk about, and yet may affect every aspect of a person’s life (Forrest 1996). All too commonly a victim of torture may pass unnoticed or unrecognised because health care providers do not know how, or may be unwilling to engage with the issue. This paper will examine the implications for nurses of caring for the tortured. It will explore the nature of torture itself, who might be the perpetrators and who might be the victims (always acknowledging that nurses and other health care staff are often both), how victims of torture may present for health care, and the possible subjective perceptions of a torture victim when faced with a Western health care process and understanding. Finally, it will argue for an increase in awareness and sensitivity on the part of all nurses in all health care settings to the needs and sensibilities of victims of torture, and suggest that caring for them is the distillation of everything good nursing practice should be. The general thrust of these is that very general mutual stationarity properties on small cardinals, such as the ℵns, is a large cardinal property. A number of open problems, theorems, and conjectures are stated.

Horace's Satires 1.8 and 1.9 have long interested commentators for the enticing glimpse they provide of the changing Roman cityscape in the 30s BCE In light of the recent problematization of the strict correspondence between the poet Horace and his elaborately constructed satiric persona, locations in the Satires should be read not so much as autobiographical accounts of the poet's movement through the city but rather as functions of other themes and motifs in the Satires. This paper examines the moral (...) and aesthetic encoding of the urban landscape in Horace's Satires Book I.Satires 1.9 and 1.8 reveal that Rome's city center and the gardens of Maecenas constitute an arena for the satirist's indirect meditation about the complex relationship between his poetry and his patron Maecenas. By mapping moral and aesthetic behavior onto these urban areas, Horace comments on the viability of satiric poetry in various social situations and settings. The emerging picture presents the city center — filled as it is with human vice and folly — as a place appropriate for satiric poetry, and Maecenas' gardens — free from competition and ambition — as a place inimical to it. Thus the gardens of Maecenas present for the satirist a moral and aesthetic problem, and their specter haunts his downtown stroll in Satires 1.9 as much as does the aspirant who dogs his steps. The decorum of patronage requires that Horace show proper subordination to his benefactors. Yet the decorum of satire requires that the poet undermine status, stability, and authority. While professing that status is not an issue in Maecenas' circle, the poems reveal instead that status is always an issue, aected no less by one's physical than one's social position. (shrink)
