The subject of my paper are the methodological questions of applied ethics. In order to address this problem, we should clarify, in the first place, what it is that is called applied or practical ethics. The latter expression may appear a bit curious, indeed, for it might seem to suggest that there is an ethics which has nothing to do with practical matters. On the other hand, “applied ethics” may be taken to mean the same as “application of ethics”. In (...) this case, the sense of the expression is rather clear; but it already involves a strong premise in that it says that ethical method consists in applying a previously given standpoint to concrete cases. From a teleological concept of a species you can derive normative orientation, more precisely the aim of the good realisation of the immanent telos. But can you draw any ethical consequences from Darwin's scientific evolutionary theory? To answer this question, some preliminary clarification is necessary concerning both sides, Darwinism as well as ethical theory. Who is the bearer of evolution and how far do the claims of evolutionary theory reach? Nowadays, one would say that it is neither the species nor (...) the group which carries the process of evolution, but the gene. In what follows I use this revised model. What is the role of evolution once we look at man? Does man disrupt evolutionary descriptions as soon as he has developed language and culture, or does it make sense to talk of cultural evolution, and what does the term mean in this context? The debate on the possibility and scope of evolutionary ethics (socio-biology) often suffers from a lack of differentiation in the underlying concepts. I suggest that we distinguish three (interdependent) aspects: form, content and motivation. Having sketched the background assumptions of my paper, in the main part I'll try to find out what ethicists can learn from evolutionism and what are the limits of socio-biology. Finally, I'll explicate the consequences of Darwinism regarding the scope of morality: animals being our ancestors or relatives, endowed with similar capacities, they cannot be disregarded as objects of our moral obligations. Este ensayo se ocupa de identificar, en primera instancia, cuáles son las preguntas y temas que corresponden a la estética; en segunda instancia, su relevancia dentro de la reflexión filosófica; y, en tercera y última instancia, si se pueden tratar tales cuestiones y temas, con los procedimientos propios de la filosofía. La intención general que se identifica está encaminada a justificar la estética como un campo importante de la investigación filosófica.

El artículo se propone determinar los asuntos que competen a la filosofía y a la literatura a partir de, primero, un contexto común, el de la totalidad; y segundo, dos perspectivas, a saber, la cuestión por la relación de la filosofía y la literatura con la totalidad, y la relevancia ética y moral de dicha relación. La totalidad debe ser entendida de tres formas: la de la realidad y del mundo; la de las relaciones de los hombres con el mundo (...) y su comprensión; y, la de la vida individual. This paper attempts to analyse and criticize the arguments and motives of those who reject any discussion of active euthanasia. A distinction is drawn between freedom of discussion in academic and in public con texts. Academic discussion demands unrestricted freedom, whereas in public debates the feelings of the groups concerned should be considered. The author argues that these restrictions are not serious enough to justify suppressing the debate. Problems of euthanasia are too vital to be left to the experts without (...) public control. Die klassischen Moraltheorien sind zumeist monistisch, d. h. sie legen ihrem Ansatz genau einen Gesichtspunkt zugrunde, wie Immanuel Kant den absoluten Wert der reinen Vernunft oder der Utilitarismus das Gesamtwohl. Angesichts der in den letzten Jahrzehnten immer komplexeren Anwendungsprobleme werden zunehmend auch pluralistische und multikriterielle Ansätze vertreten. Diese sind gerade auch in der Tierethik beliebt, weil die Annahme vielfacher Kriterien eine genauere Bestimmung des moralischen Status der Tiere in Aussicht stellt.

En el marco de la discusión filosófica anglosajona, que ha tendido a evitar la pregunta por la constitución del ser humano debido a su carácter metafísico, surgen dos reflexiones acerca del significado de vivir la vida y sus implicaciones. Por un lado, la de Parfit en Reasons and Persons, y por otro, la de Richard Wollheim en The Thread of Life. El objetivo de este ensayo es establecer una reflexión crítica a propósito de ambos textos, cuyos planteamientos, no superan los (...) alcances especulativos de la tradición filosófica existencial respecto de la pregunta por la vida y sus implicaciones. Pero en este texto no sólo se hace una lectura crítica de ambos ensayos sino que además se intenta mostrar tanto los límites de una reflexión meramente especulativa a la hora de afrontar la pregunta por la vida humana, que justifique su valor de verdad sin recurrir a una descripción de los fenómenos; como los de una reflexión que intente forzar los fenómenos a la luz de una teoría que se considera plausible. Este es el marco teórico desde el cual se esboza una concepción de la filosofía y de su papel como reflexión especulativa alrededor de la pregunta por la vida buena. (shrink)

ZusammenfassungIn der gegenwärtigen Ethik ist der Standpunkt einer universellen Moral weit verbreitet. Der Beitrag erörtert drei Dimensionen moralischer Universalität: Erstens, wer sind alle im Sinn der Gegenstände der moralischen Rücksicht? Zweitens, wer sind alle im Sinn der moralischen Akteure? Drittens, wie verhalten sich Gegenstände der Moral und moralische Akteure, oder anders gesagt, moralische Rechte und moralische Verpflichtungen zueinander? Es wird argumentiert, dass sich ein sinnvoller Verpflichtungsbegriff nur innerhalb einer realen Gemeinschaft verwenden lässt. Das hat zur Folge, dass Rechte und Pflichten (...) nicht deckungsgleich sind, d. h. der inhaltliche Kern der Moral, wonach alle leidensfähigen Wesen ein Recht auf die Sicherung der Grundbedingungen ihres Wohls haben, keinen allgemeinen realen Adressaten hat.
