The paper discusses some aspects of the relationship between Feyerabend and Kuhn. First, some biographical remarks concerning their connections are made. Second, four characteristics of Feyerabend and Kuhn's concept of incommensurability are discussed. Third, Feyerabend's general criticism of Kuhn's Structure of Scientific Revolutions is reconstructed. Fourth and more specifically, Feyerabend's criticism of Kuhn's evaluation of normal science is critically investigated. Finally, Feyerabend's re-evaluation of Kuhn's philosophy towards the end of his life is presented.

This collection applies the characterisations of children and childhood made in Deleuze and Guattari's work to concerns that have shaped our idea of the child. Bringing together established and new voices, the authors consider aspects of children's lives such as time, language, gender, affect, religion, atmosphere and schooling.

There are historically three main trends in understanding Wittgenstein's Tractatus. The first is the interpretation offered by the Vienna Circle. They read Wittgenstein as arguing that neither metaphysical nor normative propositions have any cognitive meaning, and thus are to be considered nonsense. This interpretation understands Wittgenstein as setting the limits of sense, and prescribing that nothing of substantive philosophical importance lies beyond that line. The second way of reading the Tractatus, which has became popular since the 1950s, is the interpretation (...) which most currently accept as the early Wittgenstein's view; for this reason I refer to it as the 'standard reading.' According to this interpretation, Wittgenstein did not consider metaphysical and ethical discourse as nonsense. Rather, relying upon the distinction between saying [sagen] and showing [zeigen], he meant that these truths cannot be uttered, but instead are only shown. The standard reading can perhaps be best understood in contrast with the third interpretation, dubbed the "resolute reading." The resolute reading takes seriously Wittgenstein's remark at 6.54 that "[m]y propositions are elucidatory in this way: he who understands me finally recognizes them as nonsense [unsinnig]." According to the resolute interpretation, Wittgenstein is not advancing a series of philosophical theses in the Tractatus. Rejecting the distinction characteristic of standard readings, between propositions without sense [sinnlos] and just plain nonsense [unsinnig], these interpreters read Wittgenstein as treating ethical and metaphysical inquiry, as well as a bulk of the doctrines in the text, as nonsense. To them, Wittgenstein did not intend to put forth any theses in the the text. Instead his methodology is therapeutic, similar to the later philosophy. It In this essay I explain each interpretation, and evaluate them in terms of textual and philosophical viability. I conclude by arguing that the biases which exist in the tradition of analytic philosophy substantively temper the interpretation of historical texts, which ultimately leads to the fundamental distinction between these three interpretations. Où se trouve le sérieux? L'auteur se pose cette question peu commune, et se met en quête d'une réponse. Il propose une articulation du sérieux selon les modes épistémologique, esthétique et éthique, pour l'approcher indirectement par le feint, le comique et le léger. Il s'attaque d'abord au problème que pose une quête du sérieux par le " feint ", ce qui le conduit à des interprétations originales du doute cartésien, du langage philosophique et de la connaissance scientifique : il distingue (...) le feint du fictif et du faux, mais constate aussi que le feint a tendance à se transformer en l'un ou en l'autre. L'auteur s'aventure ensuite dans le domaine esthétique où, à partir d'une critique de la théorie bergsonienne du rire, il développe sa propre interprétation du comique ; il soutient que la musique est l'art relativement le plus sérieux, mais que le sérieux comme tel est absent de l'art. Passant à la morale, il se voit obligé d'abord de s'expliquer avec les existentialistes français, ennemis déclarés du sérieux, puis, après une franche appréciation du sérieux de notre époque, d'admettre finalement que le léger y joue un rôle essentiel aussi. Distinguant en plus le sérieux du fanatique, l'auteur tente de préciser les rapports entre le sérieux et la foi, la Bible, et la pensée kierkegaardienne. Il conclut que la philosophie, et plus particulièrement la métaphysique, est le ressort du sérieux, mais que le philosophe est tenu par son sérieux même de chercher toujours plus loin. Le livre est écrit sous la forme de carnets, dans un style clair et engageant ; non dépourvu d'humour, il s'adresse à tout lecteur philosophiquement averti. (shrink)

Here I suggest that Virginia Woolf was a great artist who has provided descriptions of concrete sequences of events in consciousness and perhaps insights into its nature. Of course, we can never be completely sure of the accuracy of her descriptions. But they at least offer instances with which theories of consciousness can be grounded, and inspiration for models of consciousness. For this purpose I use an incident that occurs near the beginning of To The Lighthouse by Woolf , and (...) the commentary on it by Auerbach . Auerbach's commentary is important in itself, and has also figured in two substantial traditions in the development of literary criticism. Auerbach was the first to analyse the ‘interior monologue’ of Mrs Ramsay, the protagonist of the novel, and to comment on its significance. The problem that concerns me is identifying and understanding the multipersonal voices that figure in the interior monologue during the incident. (shrink)
