This article uses the translation approach to analyze the Green Revolution in Bali, Indonesia. The translation approach reopens the controversy about a classical topic in development studies: the failure or success of the Green Revolution. The translation method helps us to understand how the previous explanations of the failure or success of the Green Revolution in Bali were socially constructed and how the presence and the identity of social groups involved in agriculture on Bali were negotiated during the controversy. J. (...) Stephen Lansing's recent computer model of Balinese agriculture is examined as a new component of the Green Revolution technological package. The analysis shows that the success of Lansing's model is better understood as a result of his communication strategy than as a scientific achievement. (shrink)

La méconnaissance du virus SARS-CoV-2 et une communication publique déficiente ont contribué à alimenter l’incertitude radicale depuis le début de la pandémie. Cette conjoncture est propice au déferlement de contre-discours dits complotistes dans les arènes numériques et autres « forums hybrides ». Les institutions publiques et médiatiques, en privilégiant une approche épistémologique basée sur le debunking, échouent à comprendre la préférence d’une frange de la population pour les vérités « alternatives » au détriment des preuves scientifiques. En analysant les formes (...) médiatiques et alèthurgiques d’un tel contre-discours, nous montrons comment il se nourrit de l’incertitude pour asseoir son pouvoir et son autorité, témoignant du retour d’une (mauvaise) parrêsia. Résumé Les manifestations du printemps érable à Montréal apparaissent dans les médias comme mettant la ville à feu et à sang. En fait, avant la répression policière, il y a des corps qui marchent ensemble, des airs de musique et des bouts de poèmes qui traversent les têtes, et surtout des rires, qui ont de quoi dissoudre les simulacres médiatiques où nous nous sommes crus enfermés.

Résumé Une longue histoire relie le développement des technologies médiatiques aux ruminations sur les spectres et les fantômes. Les manifestations de rue du « printemps érable » à Montréal ont permis de revivre cette histoire en condensé : les spectres y sont apparus, dans l’ombre du simulacre de gouvernement avec son attirail de loi spéciale, de propagande mass-médiatique et de répression, dans une expérience glorieuse du temps réel. Cette expérience a surtout permis de faire apparaître d’autres spectres, prismatiques, rigolards et (...) libérateurs, à mi-chemin entre les potentiels inédits des nouveaux médias et la vieille pratique de marcher dans une rue ensemble. This article proposes a multidisciplinary alternative framework to the classical model of the diffusion of innovations, to analyze the potential uses of microcomputers for development. The emphasis on the indigenous knowledge systems translates a paradigm shift in the analysis of technology transfer. This shift requires the integration of the user’s knowledge as the condition of the adoption of the innovation.
