Serving the emperor without asking: Critical care ethics in japan.Yoshinori Nakata, Takahisa Goto & Shigeho Morita - 1998 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 23 (6):601 – 615.
This article is an attempt by Japanese physicians to introduce the practice patterns and moral justification of Japanese critical care to the world. Japanese health care is characterized by the fact that the fee schedule does not reward high technology medicine, such as surgery and critical care. In spite of the low reimbursement, our critical care practice pattern is characterized by continuing futile treatment for terminal patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). This apparently wasteful practice can be explained by (...)

    Grain-boundary faceting at a ‡ = 3, [110]/{112} grain boundary in a cubic zirconia bicrystal.Naoya Shibata, Fumiyasu Oba, Takahisa Yamamoto, Taketo Sakuma & Yuichi Ikuhara - 2003 - Philosophical Magazine 83 (19):2221-2246.
The atomic structure of a ‡ = 3, [110]/{112} grain boundary in a yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia bicrystal has been investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy . It was found that the grain boundary migrated to form periodic facets, although the bicrystal was initially joined so as to have the symmetric boundary plane of {112}. The faceted boundary planes were indexed as {111}/{115}. The structure of the {111}/{115} grain boundary was composed of an alternate array of two types of structure unit: (...)

    Creativity.J. Augustus Bacigalupi - 2023 - Angelaki 28 (3):78-94.
This paper explores how adaptive creativity is continuously generated and sustained in living systems. The philosophical frame and motivations for this investigation will be introduced by juxtaposing an actual creative process with current cybernetic efforts to automate creativity. Past and present process philosophers that have critiqued the implicit commitments of these contemporary techniques will set the stage for further investigations. The litmus test of progress in this investigation will be measured against the extension of two concepts: virtuality, as introduced by (...)

    Model templates: transdisciplinary application and entanglement.Tarja Knuuttila & Andrea Loettgers - 2023 - Synthese 201 (6):1-23.
The omnipresence of the same basic equations, function forms, algorithms, and quantitative methods is one of the most spectacular characteristics of contemporary modeling practice. Recently, the emergence of the discussion of templates and template transfer has addressed this striking cross-disciplinary reach of certain mathematical forms and computational algorithms. In this paper, we develop a notion of a model template, consisting of its mathematical structure, ontology, prototypical properties and behaviors, focal conceptualizations, and the paradigmatic questions it addresses. We apply this notion (...)

Modeling Frequency Reduction in Human Groups Performing a Joint Oscillatory Task.Carmela Calabrese, Benoît G. Bardy, Pietro De Lellis & Mario di Bernardo - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
In human groups performing oscillatory tasks, it has been observed that the frequency of participants' oscillations reduces when compared to that acquired in solo. This experimental observation is not captured by the standard Kuramoto oscillators, often employed to model human synchronization. In this work, we aim at capturing this observed phenomenon by proposing three alternative modifications of the standard Kuramoto model that are based on three different biologically-relevant hypotheses underlying group synchronization. The three models are tuned, validated and (...)

Positive emotions foster spontaneous synchronisation in a group movement improvisation task.Andrii Smykovskyi, Marta M. N. Bieńkiewicz, Simon Pla, Stefan Janaqi & Benoît G. Bardy - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Emotions are a natural vector for acting together with others and are witnessed in human behaviour, perception and body functions. For this reason, studies of human-to-human interaction, such as multi-person motor synchronisation, are a perfect setting to disentangle the linkage of emotion with socio-motor interaction. And yet, the majority of joint action studies aiming at understanding the impact of emotions on multi-person performance resort to enacted emotions, the ones that are emulated based on the previous experience of such emotions, and (...)
