Measuring the Spiritual, Character, and Moral Formation of Seminarians: In Search of a Meta-Theory of Spiritual Change.Peter C. Hill, David C. Wang, Steven J. Sandage & Steven L. Porter - 2019 - Journal of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care 12 (1):5-24.
Theological schools are well situated to create intentional cultures for the purpose of spiritual formation. Indeed, most schools of theology have this goal as an essential part of their mission as well as a requirement for continued accreditation. And yet, the measurement of spiritual formation over time is fraught with challenges. This article seeks to address some of these challenges by means of developing a meta-theory of positive change/growth which would eventually serve as a theoretical basis for the development of (...)

The Dimensions of Spirituality Inventory.Wesley J. Wildman, David Rohr, Steven J. Sandage & Nicholas C. Donato - 2024 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 46 (1):35-70.
The Dimensions of Spirituality Inventory (DSI) is a 50-item quantitative assessment of spirituality. Whereas “spirituality” has seemed to some to be too vague for research purposes, the DSI follows earlier qualitative research in showing that usage of the word points to an intelligible conceptual structure. Instead of defining spirituality and then operationalizing it, as most extant instruments do, the DSI defines and operationalizes 21 relatively uncontroversial elemental components of spirituality, so the overall interpretation of spirituality can only emerge after factor (...)

    A Developmental Model of Interreligious Competence.Jonathan Morgan & Steven J. Sandage - 2016 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 38 (2):129-158.
This paper articulates a developmental model for how individuals relate to religious difference. We begin by reviewing scholarly work on multicultural competencies and initial research on religious diversity. To provide a framework for our model, we explore the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity and its relationship to research within the psychology of religion. The review closes by examining and critiquing a preliminary model of interreligious sensitivity. From this multi-faceted review, we propose a developmental model of interreligious competence and suggest key (...)

Longitudinal associations for right-wing authoritarianism, social justice, and compassion among seminary students.Peter J. Jankowski, Steven J. Sandage, Daniel J. Hauge, Choi Hee An & David C. Wang - 2022 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 44 (3):202-222.
Religious/spiritual communities in the United States hold significant differences in the relative valuing of social order and progress toward social justice, and religious/spiritual leaders play an influential role in fostering those values. This recognition has prompted calls for theological education to revise the process of student formation, equipping them to address an increasingly diverse social world and the social disparities within their larger communities. Right-wing authoritarianism tends to be associated with a preference for social order and various forms of prejudice, (...)

Relational Spirituality and Transformation: Risking Intimacy and Alterity.Daniel Jass, Mary L. Jensen & Steven J. Sandage - 2008 - Journal of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care 1 (2):182-206.
We extend a relational model of spirituality and transformation based on Shuts’ and Sandage's previous interdisciplinary work in Transforming Spirituality. Spirituality is conceptualized based on a relational framework, and transformation is understood as emerging through an intensification of relational anxiety. Spiritual maturity is related to differentiation of self, based on theology and social science. The risks and challenges of relational intimacy and alterity are proposed as two relational pathways toward differentiation and spiritual transformation. Practical relational strategies to enhance spiritual formation (...)

Humility in Seminary Student Formation: A Mixed Method Community Action Study.Dottie A. Oleson, Steven J. Sandage, James Tomlinson & Laura E. Captari - 2021 - Journal of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care 14 (2):211-234.
This cross-sectional mixed method community action study exploring the virtue of humility was conducted as part of a collaborative practical theology project at a pluralistic, ecumenical Mainline Protestant seminary. Students in a spiritual formation graduate class completed quantitative measures of humility, spiritual well-being, differentiation of self, mentalization, and mindfulness, while open-ended qualitative data captured their perspectives about the role of humility in formation. Qualitative results revealed important nuances about emerging religious leaders’ views on humility, including experiencing this virtue as facilitative (...)

PTSD symptoms in religious leaders: Prevalence, stressors, and associations with narcissism.Elizabeth G. Ruffing, Chance A. Bell & Steven J. Sandage - 2021 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 43 (1):21-40.
Religious leaders face numerous mental health challenges, and prior research suggests that some experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder due to work-related experiences. This study employed a diverse sample of 274 religious leaders to qualitatively describe the types of work-related experiences they identify as particularly stressful or overwhelming, assess the prevalence of PTSD symptoms associated with these experiences, and test hypothesized associations between PTSD symptoms and narcissism. The study found that the stressful experiences reported typically involved relational conflict, having limited (...)

Psychology of religion and spirituality in Jewish contexts: A synthetic review.Laura B. Stein & Steven J. Sandage - forthcoming - Archive for the Psychology of Religion.
Jewish spirituality and religion include dynamics that are different from other traditions and have important implications for relational forms of spirituality. Certain approaches to relational Judaism (e.g. Mussar) have offered insights for understanding the folk psychology of relational spirituality in Jewish contexts but have not generated empirical research. Existing research in the psychology of Jewish religion and spirituality draws on several theoretical frameworks and has generated helpful findings. In this synthetic review, we foreground the role of theory in psychological research (...)
