The origin and expansion of kulturpessimismus: The relationship between public and private spheres in early twentieth century germany.Stephen Kalberg - 1987 - Sociological Theory 5 (2):150-164.
A radical critique of modernity crystallized in the German Bildungsburgertum at the end of the last century. A broad cross-section of this stratum equated "mass democracy" with anarchy, foresaw a future populated only by "atomized modern men," and disdained the "vulgarity" of industrial capitalism. The origin and expansion of the intense and persistent configuration of cultural values that constituted German Kulturpessimismus deserves exploratory theoretical examination. The sociology of knowledge analysis suggested here is based on a Weberian framework that examines the (...)

Max Weber: readings and commentary on modernity.Max Weber & Stephen Kalberg (eds.) - 2005 - Malden, MA: Blackwell.
This unique volume gathers Weber's writings on a broad array of themes, from the nature of work, to the political culture of democracy, to the uniqueness of the West, to the character of the family and race relations, to the role of science and the fate of ethical action in the modern world. Gathers Weber’s writings in a comprehensive collection, organized by topic. Rejuvenates a central, pivotal theme of Weberian thought: "How do we live?" and "How can we live in (...)

The rationalization of action in Max Weber's sociology of religion.Stephen Kalberg - 1990 - Sociological Theory 8 (1):58-84.
An analysis of the manner in which believers' "relations to the supernatural" influence and even rationalize their action is central to Weber's sociology as a whole as well as his analysis of the development of modern capitalism and to his sociology of religion. Yet Weber never systematically presents the highly differentiated analytic course followed by the "rationalization of action" in the life-sphere of religion to the "methodical rational way of life." This study reconstructs this meandering route. In doing so, it (...)

  4. On the neglect of Weber's protestant ethic as a theoretical treatise: Demarcating the parameters of postwar american sociological theory.Stephen Kalberg - 1996 - Sociological Theory 14 (1):49-70.
Although widely recognized as one of sociology's true classics. Max Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism has largely failed to influence the development of sociological theory in the United States. Because it has been read almost exclusively as a study of the "role of ideas" in economic development, its diverse and multifaceted theoretical contributions generally have been neglected. This study explicitly calls attention to The Protestant Ethic as a theoretical treatise by examining this classic in reference to (...)

Max Weber's sociology of civilizations: a reconstruction.Stephen Kalberg - 2021 - New York, NY: Routledge.
This book investigates civilizations through the works of Max Weber. Articulating his sociology in a manner that provides clear guidelines for the systematic investigation of civilizations, the volume focuses upon his 'big picture' themes: his comparative-historical methodology and his causal explanations for the singular sources, contours, and trajectories of civilizations. Through detailed interpretations of Weber's wide-scope and configurational analysis of the West's unique development from Antiquity to the Modern era, his forceful comparisons to the discrete pathways taken by China and (...)

West German and American Interaction Forms: One Level of Structured Misunderstanding.Stephen Kalberg - 1987 - Theory, Culture and Society 4 (4):603-618.
Forms of interaction are seldom addressed in comparative perspective. This investigation based on field notes and interviews examines the manner in which a series of American and West German patterns of interpersonal relations diverge. The insider/outsider, public/private, Freundschaft/friendship dichotomies, as well as modes of speaking and group dynamics, are discussed. A series of regular and structured misunderstandings may result when Americans and West Germans come into contact.
