Over the past 15 years, a great deal of efforts have been done by political philosophers to make liberal political theory more sensitive to the importance culture has for individuals, and to think about how to translate this importance into laws and policies, in particular those affecting cultural and national minorities. However, one of the outstanding issues is whether and how an appropriate account of the worth of culture can be provided from a liberal point of view. The most important (...) and currently discussed liberal defence of the worth of culture is probably expressed in Will Kymlicka's theory of minority rights. Such a defence argues for the instrumental role culture plays in people's ability to make meaningful choices and lead a self-directed existence. This paper seeks to show that Kymlicka's instrumental account of the worth of cultures is non-viable, and that a liberal conception of culture viewed as intrinsically valuable is indispensable. While each of them recognizes individual autonomy as an intrinsically valuable good, it is demonstrated that both differ not only as to the role culture has to play in a self-directed existence, but also as to why cultures deserve to be protected and as to their policies towards non-liberal minority cultures. This volume offers an English translation of John of St. Thomas's Cursus theologicus I, question I, disputation 2. In this particular text, the Dominican master raises questions concerning the scientific status and nature of theology. At issue, here, are a number of factors: namely, Christianity's continual coming to terms with the "Third Entry" of Aristotelian thought into Western Christian intellectual culture - specifically the Aristotelian notion of 'science' and sacra doctrina's satisfaction of those requirements - the Thomistic-commentary tradition, and the (...) larger backdrop of the Iberian Peninsula's flourishing "Second Scholasticism." In this latter context, John of St. Thomas applies the theological principles of Thomas Aquinas to the Scholastic disputes preoccupying Thomist, Franciscan, and Jesuit theologians, such as Cajetan, Bañez, Luis de Molina, Vazquez, Suárez - to name only a few - in a tour de force of theological thinking throughout the entire period of Scholasticism. In the process - and not insignificantly - the status quaestionis of theology's scientific character is clearly framed and answered according to John's satisfaction. Key to John of St. Thomas's resolution of the question is his understanding of the continuity of the power of human reason with the super-intelligibility of divine revelation spelled out in terms of what he calls "virtual revelation." This text presented in this volume is a quintessential example of the deep and abiding harmony that flourished between faith and reason as well as grace and nature within the golden era of Baroque Scholasticism. Written and set on the banks of the Neva, St Petersburg Dialogues is a startlingly relevant analysis of the human prospect in the twenty-first century. As the literary critic George Steiner has remarked, "the age of the Gulag and of Auschwitz, of famine and ubiquitous torture... nuclear threat, the ecological laying waste of our planet, the leap of endemic, possibly pandemic, illness out of the very matrix of libertarian progress" is exactly what Joseph de Maistre foretold. In the Dialogues Maistre (...) addressed a number of topics that are discussed briefly or not at all in his other works already available in English. These include an apologetic for traditional Christian beliefs about providence, reflections on the social role of the public executioner and the "divinity" of war, a critique of John Locke's sensationalist psychology, meditations on prayer and sacrifice, and a mini-course on "illuminism." The literary form is that of the "philosophical conversation" – one that allowed Maistre to be deliberately provocative and to indulge his taste for paradox, a "methodical extravagance" that he judged particularly appropriate for the eighteenth-century salon. Translator and editor Richard Lebrun provides a full scholarly edition of this classic work, complete with an introduction, chronology, critical bibliography, and generous explanatory notes. In the World Library of Psychologists series, international experts themselves present career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest pieces - extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings, and their major theoretical and practical contributions. Jonathan St B T Evans is amongst the foremost cognitive psychologists of his generation, having been influential in spearheading developments in the psychological study of reasoning from its very beginnings in the 1970s up to the present day. This volume of self-selected papers (...) recognises Professor Evan's major contribution to the psychological study of thinking and reasoning by bringing together his most influential and important works. This is a very good book. It gives 205 inscriptions from ten of the Cycladic islands. A number of them are published here for the first time. In their majority they are either funerary or invocations for divine help. Some are dedicatory. Some are inscriptions on well-paintings identifying the scene or the saint depicted or being themselves dedicatory or invocatory. Some are in praise of God or in thanks to God. Some are exhortations to the faithful or quotations from the (...) Scriptures. Two are boundary stones and two are magical exorcisms. Outstanding among them are the cadastre of the area of Perissa on the island of Thera, the invocations for divine help carved by weatherbeaten seafarers on the rocks of the desert cove of Grammata on the island of Syros, and the intriguing 60-odd funerary inscriptions of the angels, also from Thera, that keep defying explanation. As a whole they give an insight and lead to a close intimacy with the life of the islanders in these early centuries, fortified as they were by the christian faith, toiling on the thin soil of their land and venturing at sea. Some of them raise questions that cannot be easily answered. Others are quite straightforward. (shrink)

Qu'est-ce que la phénoménologie de la phénoménologie de E Fink, dont la Sixième méditation cartésienne constitue l'exposition principale? Au lieu d'aborder la Sixième méditation à partir de sa genèse textuelle ou à partir de la collaboration avec E Husserl dont elle est issue, l'auteur la prend à partir de son problème directeur. Ce dernier est mis au jour à travers une confrontation approfondie avec la phénoménologie husserlienne du temps, ce qui est devenu récemment possible, d'une part, grâce à la publication (...) des Manuscrits de Bernau et des Manuscrits C, d'autre part, grâce à la publication des notes de recherches de Fink. De là, la division de l'ouvrage en trois moments. Le premier analyse le problème directeur de la phénoménologie de la phénoménologie linkienne dans sa forme de base : comment la temporalisation originaire, qui est à l'origine du flux immanent, se phénoménalise-t-elle? Le deuxième approfondit le problème de la phénoménalisation de la temporalisation originaire dans ses multiples formes : comme problème de la phénoménalisation de l'origine des essences immanentes, de la langue, de l'intersubjectivité et enfin de la science de l'immanence. Le troisième considère le problème de la phénoménalisation de la temporalisation originaire dans l'unité de ses multiples formes et notamment, comme problème de l'attestation phénoménologique de la temporalisation originaire. Ce parcours permet de reconstruire et de problématiser la "métaphysique phénoménologique" que Fink considérait comme le couronnement de sa phénoménologie de la phénoménologie. (shrink)

Included in this edition of the Proslogion are Gaunilo's "A Reply on Behalf of the Fool" and St. Anselm's "The Author's Reply to Gaunilo." (...) Nous philosophons, psychanalysons et écrivons dans un monde. Il arrive qu'on l'oublie. On peut nommer politique l'inquiétude devant ce qui arrive dans le monde et au monde. A ce qui arrive au monde au nom du Califat, seul le politique peut faire réponse. Dans cette optique il s'agira de dégager le minimal du politique, en vue de sa relance. Apparaît alors une quasi synonymie entre psychanalyse et politique : l'une et l'autre ont en commun de faire avec l'impossible. Ni psychanalyse (...) appliquée, ni psychanalyse du politique, mais penser avec la psychanalyse, s'en servir, faire travailler ses notions, parler ses langues, l'altérer aussi, la déplacer. Arendt nous apprend que dès qu'il est question de langage, le politique est engagé. Mais dès qu'il est question de langage, c'est le vif de la psychanalyse qui est également mis en jeu. Nouage inextricable de la psychanalyse et du politique, donc. Si la psychanalyse ne sort pas de ses institutions, de ses dispositifs, et, partant, ne se mêle pas au politique, alors nous tenons qu'il n'y a pas de psychanalyse qui vaille une minute de peine. A la vérité, une psychanalyse qui n'est pas sollicitée par le monde et ne le sollicite pas en même temps ne peut encore s'appeler psychanalyse. (shrink)

Les sciences sociales s'éloignent aujourd'hui de l'idée selon laquelle leur contribution principale au savoir consisterait à approfondir sans cesse la découverte de l'homme moyen et de l'individu assujetti aux grandes forces collectives, découverte par laquelle elles se justifièrent à l'origine. Désormais, la singularité biographique et caractérologique compte. Elle forme même une dimension décisive du social. Dans ces conditions, les processus par lesquels le donné social se trouve incorporé au psychisme individuel, mais aussi l'inévitable tension persistante de l'objectif et du subjectif, (...) autrefois thèmes latéraux de la pensée sociologique, tendent à se voir reconnaître une importance centrale. S'appuyant sur l'histoire de la psychanalyse, Stéphane Haber, professeur de philosophie à l'université Paris-Ouest-Nanterre, montre qu'une telle conjoncture invite à relire Freud de manière différente et réévalue ses apports en tant que penseur des interactions entre psychisme et société. Les enjeux de cette relecture ne sont pas purement théoriques. Ainsi. comme projet social et politique englobant. le néolibéralisme a provoqué l'émergence de nouvelles incitations à l'auto-contrainte ( devenir plus performant, plus efficace, plus flexible, plus rationnel...) qui rappellent la violence retournée contre soi que Freud décrivait au moyen du concept de "surmoi" composante essentielle. selon lui, du psychisme individuel. On voit à quel point la critique de l'époque présente peut gagner à s'engager sur la voie d'une réappropriation judicieuse des hypothèses et des concepts freudiens. (shrink)

The strict-tolerant approach to paradox promises to erect theories of naïve truth and tolerant vagueness on the firm bedrock of classical logic. We assess the extent to which this claim is founded. Building on some results by Girard we show that the usual proof-theoretic formulation of propositional ST in terms of the classical sequent calculus without primitive Cut is incomplete with respect to ST-valid metainferences, and exhibit a complete calculus for the same class of metainferences. We also argue that the (...) latter calculus, far from coinciding with classical logic, is a close kin of Priest’s LP. (shrink)

Un pan entier de l'activité des grandes entreprises consiste aujourd'hui à manipuler la science. Confrontés aux faits, les industriels utilisent le discours scientifique comme un instrument de propagande pour instiller le doute. Les fabricants de tabac sont les premiers à avoir recruté des faux experts, fait publier des études biaisées, organisé des fausses conférences scientifiques et corrompu des sociétés savantes afin de convaincre que le tabac n'était peut-être pas responsable du cancer du poumon. Les mêmes procédés ont été remis au (...) goût du jour pour dédouaner l'amiante de ses méfaits, pour relativiser ou nier le réchauffement climatique, pour faire du déclin des abeilles un " mystère " sans lien avec les nouvelles générations d'insecticides. Ils sont également à l'oeuvre dans l'affaire du bisphénol A, l'un des plus graves scandales sanitaires de ces dernières décennies. puant au " débat " sur les OGM, cela fait bien longtemps qu'il n'a plus rien à voir avec la science. Les intérêts en jeu sont trop colossaux pour laisser les chercheurs s'exprimer librement. L'écologie politique est devenue depuis le milieu des années 1980 une force politique majeure dans notre pays, et dans d'autres pays occidentaux. Cependant, elle recouvre des sensibilités idéologiques très diverses allant du progressisme au conservatisme, voire à une attitude réactionnaire. La diversité du tissu associatif montre la pluralité de l'expression. Le mérite de Stéphane François est de nous aider à saisir ces nuances en donnant une présentation précise, érudite même, et pourtant claire des groupes et courants concernés. Son propos pourra (...) parfois apparaître un peu provocateur : alors qu'il est de bon ton de considérer que l'écologie politique se situe à gauche du spectre politique, il présente des aspects de droite qui animent aussi celle-ci, ou qui même déterminent une part importante de sa conception du monde. Cet ouvrage souligne, en effet, les aspects nostalgiques, technophobes et parfois antilibéraux, qui s'expriment dans les textes et les discours. Il montre aussi l'existence d'une écologie d'extrême droite, voire néo-païenne, assez vivace qui coexiste avec des formations plus établies. Cette approche novatrice permet de comprendre cette configuration droitière de l'écologie politique, sans pour autant porter de jugements sommaires sur les discours analysés. (shrink)

En s'intéressant aux principales manifestations de cette pensée irrationnelle au XXIe siècle, dans une optique résolument pluridisciplinaire (sociologie, anthropologie, histoire, politique, philosophie, études littéraires), cet ouvrage déconstruit les idéologies, les cultures à l'oeuvre dans ces discours antisystèmes. Les auteurs examinent également de quelle manière ces milieux participent de la subversion des valeurs établies et deviennent, parfois, des producteurs artistiques et culturels de qualité.". Contre Descartes qui réduisait le corps à l'étendue, Newton trace une irréductible frontière entre l'espace et le corps : absolutisant le premier, déréalisant le second, et réhabilitant la notion de vide que Descartes avait rejetée, il neutralise ainsi deux problèmes fondamentaux qui sont d'une part, la relativité du (...) mouvement des corps, et, d'autre part, l'inconsistance ontologique de ces derniers. The realism grounding St. Thomas Aquinas’s pre-modern natural science defends the reception of similitudes of the forms of things known by abstraction. Modern natural science challenges this abstractio- nist account by recasting «form» in the leading role of principle of intelligibility—instead of forms, modern science discovers laws. Thomistic realism is prima facie incompatible with this account. Following Charles De Koninck, this essay outlines a rapprochement between the epistemology of pre-modern, Thomistic natural science and its modern successor. I argue that natural (...) forms are noetic limits towards which physical laws tend, and our grasp of this tendency uses a mode of knowledge comparable to what St. Thomas termed universal in repraesentando.
