  7. The Scandal of Deduction: Hintikka on the Information Yield of Deductive Inferences.Sebastian Sequoiah-Grayson - 2008 - Journal of Philosophical Logic 37 (1):67-94.
This article provides the first comprehensive reconstruction and analysis of Hintikka’s attempt to obtain a measure of the information yield of deductive inferences. The reconstruction is detailed by necessity due to the originality of Hintikka’s contribution. The analysis will turn out to be destructive. It dismisses Hintikka’s distinction between surface information and depth information as being of any utility towards obtaining a measure of the information yield of deductive inferences. Hintikka is right to identify the failure of canonical information theory (...)

  8. The Metaphilosophy of Information.Sebastian Sequoiah-Grayson - 2007 - Minds and Machines 17 (3):331-344.
This article mounts a defence of Floridi’s theory of strongly semantic information against recent independent objections from Fetzer and Dodig-Crnkovic. It is argued that Fetzer and Dodig-Crnkovic’s objections result from an adherence to a redundant practice of analysis. This leads them to fail to accept an informational pluralism, as stipulated by what will be referred to as Shannon’s Principle, and the non-reductionist stance. It is demonstrated that Fetzer and Dodig-Crnkovic fail to acknowledge that Floridi’s theory of strongly semantic information captures (...)

    Epistemic closure and commutative, nonassociative residuated structures.Sebastian Sequoiah-Grayson - 2013 - Synthese 190 (1):113-128.
K-axiom-based epistemic closure for explicit knowledge is rejected for even the most trivial cases of deductive inferential reasoning on account of the fact that the closure axiom does not extend beyond a raw consequence relation. The recognition that deductive inference concerns interaction as much as it concerns consequence allows for perspectives from logics of multi-agent information flow to be refocused onto mono-agent deductive reasoning. Instead of modeling the information flow between different agents in a communicative or announcement setting, we model (...)

    A positive information logic for inferential information.Sebastian Sequoiah-Grayson - 2009 - Synthese 167 (2):409 - 431.
Performing an inference involves irreducibly dynamic cognitive procedures. The article proposes that a non-associative information frame, corresponding to a residuated pogroupoid, underpins the information structure involved. The argument proceeds by expounding the informational turn in logic, before outlining the cognitive actions at work in deductive inference. The structural rules of Weakening, Contraction, Commutation, and Association are rejected on the grounds that they cause us to lose track of the information flow in inferential procedures. By taking the operation of information application (...)

  15. Dynamic negation and negative information.Sebastian Sequoiah-Grayson - 2009 - Review of Symbolic Logic 2 (1):233-248.
This essay proposes a procedural interpretation of negative information in terms of split negation as procedural prohibition. Information frames and models are introduced, with negation defined as the implication of bottom, 0. A method for extracting the procedures prohibited by complex formulas is outlined, and the relationship between types of prohibited procedures is identified. Definitions of negation types in terms of the implication of 0 on an informational interpretation have been criticized. This criticism turns on the definitions creating a purportedly (...)

Compassion fatigue in healthcare providers: A systematic review and meta-analysis.Nicola Cavanagh, Grayson Cockett, Christina Heinrich, Lauren Doig, Kirsten Fiest, Juliet R. Guichon, Stacey Page, Ian Mitchell & Christopher James Doig - 2020 - Nursing Ethics 27 (3):639-665.
Background: Compassion fatigue is recognized as impacting the health and effectiveness of healthcare providers, and consequently, patient care. Compassion fatigue is distinct from “burnout.” Reliable measurement tools, such as the Professional Quality of Life scale, have been developed to measure the prevalence, and predict risk of compassion fatigue. This study reviews the prevalence of compassion fatigue among healthcare practitioners, and relationships to demographic variables. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using key words in MEDLINE, PubMed, and Ovid databases. Data were (...)

Reading Pulp Fiction: Femininity and power in second and third wave feminist theory.Erin Grayson Sapp & Mimi Schippers - 2012 - Feminist Theory 13 (1):27-42.
This article adds to the growing literature distinguishing second and third wave feminist theory. It opens by outlining theoretical differences between second wave and third wave definitions of femininity and the role and impact of femininity on gender relations of domination, whilst briefly acknowledging the complications of the relationship between third wave feminism and post-feminism. It then suggests that these diverging perspectives on embodied femininity result from fundamentally different second wave and third wave theories of power. In doing so, it (...)

    Two Passages in Thuchydides1.C. H. Grayson - 1972 - Classical Quarterly 22 (1):62-73.
This need not in itself be surprising if the speeches of Thucydides are, as many believe, fairly free compositions, but it is difficult to explain the immediate irrelevances of [P] in particular on any view of, if this is what Thucydides is claiming to give us. As the effect of the foregoing analysis is to suggest that the generalization forms an important part of Thucydides’ ‘historical’ technique, it would be interesting to pursue the extent to which the emphasis should in (...)

Moving beyond Table 1: A critical review of the literature addressing social determinants of health in chronic condition symptom cluster research.Susan C. Grayson, Sofie A. Patzak, Gabriela Dziewulski, Lingxue Shen, Caitlin Dreisbach, Maichou Lor, Alex Conway & Theresa A. Koleck - 2023 - Nursing Inquiry 30 (1):e12519.
Variability in the symptom experience in patients diagnosed with chronic conditions may be related to social determinants of health (SDoH). The purpose of this critical review was to (1) summarize the existing literature on SDoH and symptom clusters (i.e., multiple, co‐occurring symptoms) in patients diagnosed with common chronic conditions, (2) evaluate current variables and measures used to represent SDoH, (3) identify gaps in the evidence base, and (4) provide recommendations for the incorporation of SDoH into future symptom cluster research. We (...)

    Forcing in intuitionistic systems without power-set.R. J. Grayson - 1983 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 48 (3):670-682.
It is shown how to define forcing semantics within metatheories not containing the power-set construction, in particular, how to construct exponents assuming only (a slightly strengthened form of) exponents in the metatheory. Some straightforward applications (consistency and independence results, and derived rules) are obtained for such systems.

Should Feminists Defend Self-Defense?Ann J. Cahill & Grayson Hunt - 2016 - International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics 9 (2):172-182.
Grayson Hunt1In 2015, I visited Lake Cumberland in Kentucky for a day of boating and swimming with friends. At one end of the lake was an amazing waterfall. As I was swimming near it, I looked up and saw a man thirty feet above in the bushes on top of the falls. He waved. I waved back. Only he wasn’t boating; he was just standing there. So I stared at him, wondering what he was doing up there. Then I (...)

How research ethics boards are undermining survey research on canadian university students.J. Paul Grayson & Richard Myles - 2005 - Journal of Academic Ethics 2 (4):293-314.
In Canada, all research conducted by individuals associated with universities must be subjected to review by research ethics boards (REB). Unfortunately, decisions reached by REBs may seriously compromise the integrity of university-based research. In this paper attention will focus on how requirements of REBs and a legal department in four Canadian universities affected response rates to a survey of domestic and international students. It will be shown that in universities in which students were sent a legalistic cover letter to a (...)

This study examines the character and imagery of the apocalyptic visions of a rural evangelist in Korea at the end of the Second World War. Pak Tonggi, a charismatic figure who founded a millennarian movement called the Empire of Mount Sion, experienced five major visions which shaped both his ministry and his understanding of world history. This article examines these visions and compares them with the form and motifs of apocalyptic visions recorded in the Old and New Testaments. While Pak’s (...)
