Reconstructing Schopenhauer’s Ethics: Hope, Compassion, and Animal Welfare.Sandra Shapshay - 2019 - New York, NY: Oup Usa.
This book articulates and defends an interpretation of Schopenhauer's ethics as an original and credible contribution to the history of ethics. It presents Schopenhauer's ethics of compassion in direct tension with his resignationism and aims to show surprising continuities with Kant's ethics.

    Lessons in Nondualism from World Philosophies.Sandra A. Wawrytko - 2021 - Journal of World Philosophies 6 (2):153-158.
My intellectual journey to philosophy was paved by Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, which intrigued me as a high school student. Once on the path, however, I was frustrated by the inherent barriers to women’s participation both as originators and practitioners of philosophies. Excursions into Daoism and ancient goddess culture offered welcome alternatives. Gradually I realized the problem posed by the delusion of hierarchical dualism—whether male/female, mind/body, reason/emotion, human law and order/natural chaos, or Apollonian/Dionysian—that permeates the “Western Canon.” My PhD (...)

Murasaki’s Epistemological Awakening: Buddhist Philosophical Roots of The Tale of Genji.Sandra A. Wawrytko - 2022 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 49 (1):36-49.
I approach Murasaki Shikibu’s marvelous literary pearl The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari) as analogous to glistening orbs that “come out of the disease of suffering oysters,” the suffering being the death of her beloved husband Fujiwara no Nobutaka (950?–1001). In addition to drawing evidence from the novel itself, I have relied on Murasaki’s lesser-known Poetic Memoirs and Diary that offer important insights into her state of mind and circumspect literary style. The Lotus Sūtra is the key that unlocks Murasaki’s (...)

Bioethics at the movies.Sandra Shapshay (ed.) - 2009 - Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press.
Bioethics at the Movies explores the ways in which popular films engage basic bioethical concepts and concerns. Twenty philosophically grounded essays use cinematic tools such as character and plot development, scene-setting, and narrative-framing to demonstrate a range of principles and topics in contemporary medical ethics. The first section plumbs popular and bioethical thought on birth, abortion, genetic selection, and personhood through several films, including The Cider House Rules, Citizen Ruth, Gattaca, and I, Robot. In the second section, the contributors examine (...)

Environmental crises, which are consequences of resource-intensive lifestyles and are characterized to a large extent by both a changing climate and a loss of biodiversity, stress the urgent need for a global social-ecological transformation of the agro-food system. In this regard, the bioeconomy and bioeconomic innovations have frequently been seen as instrumental in addressing these grand challenges and contributing to more sustainable land use. To date, the question of how much bioeconomic innovations contribute to sustainability objectives remains unanswered. Against this (...)

Introduction: Legal and Regulatory Issues in Pain Management.Sandra H. Johnson - 1998 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 26 (4):265-266.
The capacity to treat pain has never been greater; but, as you will read in the articles that follow, the problem of undertreated and neglected pain in the United States persists. Deep-seated perceptions and practices undergird this strong and well-documented pattern of neglect. Among the reasons frequently noted for the inadequacy of treatment for pain, however, is that the legal system actually penalizes effective interventions to relieve pain while it leaves neglect of pain unthreatened. It is the mission of the (...)

Collins, John Francis; Carroll, Sandra The publication of the 'Norms for the Formation of Permanent Deacons and Guidelines for the Ministry and Life of Permanent Deacons' by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, in August 2016, has renewed focus on the role of permanent deacon. This article uses a heuristic structure to discuss the role of the permanent deacon in the Catholic Church in Australia. It then provides a historical perspective and background on the worker priest movement from the mid-twentieth (...)

  23. The Parmenides.Sandra Peterson - 2008 - In Gail Fine (ed.), The Oxford Handbook of Plato. New York: Oxford University Press.
Parmenides contrasts with Plato's other works in several ways. For example, Socrates is depicted as “very young perhaps fifteen or nineteen.” Parmenides questions Socrates, who contradicts himself; in other dialogues of question and answer, Socrates typically questions others, who contradict themselves. The article deals with the philosophical dialogues had take place between Socrates and Zeno. Parmenides refutes Socrates on the topic of forms, items such as justice itself and good itself, while the older Socrates of other dialogues presents forms as (...)

    Rethinking Receivership.John Armour & Sandra Frisby - 2001 - Oxford Journal of Legal Studies 21 (1):73-102.
It is a popular perception that administrative receivers and their appointors hold «too much» power in relation to troubled companies. Many who hold this view have called for the reform of insolvency law in order to redress the balance of power. This issue is timely, because insolvency law is currently under review. This article argues that although the law's formal structure is imbalanced, it can nevertheless generate savings for parties, by allowing a concentrated creditor who has invested in information-gathering about (...)

    Insegurança e medo na vida urbana.Sandro Luiz Bazzanella & Sandra Bazzanella - 2022 - Griot : Revista de Filosofia 22 (2):280-292.
This article aims to offer some notes related to the question of the insecurity and fear in urban life. Constitutive condition of many, if not all, contemporary societies, fear and insecurity in urban space, or, in public space, are here analized from two thinkers. The sociologist Zygmunt Bauman is present insofar as he considers the fear a constitutive aspect on two life dimensions : on the fragility and the human contingence towards nature, and on the society itself, constituted by rules (...)

Subtle Scripture for an Invisible Church.Sandra L. Shapshay - 1998 - The Paideia Archive: Twentieth World Congress of Philosophy 1:158-165.
I argue for an interpretation of Kant's aesthetics whereby the experience of the beautiful plays the same functional role in the invisible church of natural religion as Scripture does for the visible churches of ecclesiastical religions. Thus, I contend, the links that Kant himself implies between the aesthetic and the moral are much stronger than generally portrayed by commentators. Indeed, for Kant, experience of the beautiful may be necessary in order to found what Kant views as the final end of (...)
