  1. Aspirations as Reference Points: An Experimental Investigation of Risk Behavior Over Time. [REVIEW]Arvid O. I. Hoffmann, Sam F. Henry & Nikos Kalogeras - 2013 - Theory and Decision 75 (2):193-210.
This paper examines the importance of aspirations as reference points in a multi-period decision-making context. After stating their personal aspiration level, 172 individuals made six sequential decisions among risky prospects as part of a choice experiment. The results show that individuals make different risky-choices in a multi-period compared to a single-period setting. In particular, individuals’ aspiration level is their main reference point during the early stages of decision-making, while their starting status (wealth level at the start of the experiment) becomes (...)

Adaptation of Animal and Human Health Surveillance Systems for Vector-Borne Diseases Accompanying Climate Change.Sam F. Halabi - 2020 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 48 (4):694-704.
Anthropogenic climate change is causing temperature rise in temperate zones resulting in climate conditions more similar to subtropical zones. As a result, rising temperatures increase the range of disease-carrying insects to new areas outside of subtropical zones, and increased precipitation causes flooding that is more hospitable for vector breeding. State governments, the federal government, and governmental agencies, like the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of USDA and the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (...)

Stigma and the Structure of Title IX Compliance.Jenelle M. Beavers & Sam F. Halabi - 2017 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 45 (4):558-568.
This article analyzes the relationship between the structure of federal Title IX investigations and the existing evidence addressing the emotional and mental health needs of sexual harassment and sexual assault victims. The article argues that federal requirements for investigating sexual harassment should be restructured so as to address the challenges stigma poses for the realization of Title IX's objectives.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a process for managing construction project information in such a way as to provide a basis for enhanced decision-making and for collaboration in a construction supply chain. One impediment to the uptake of BIM is the limited interoperability of different BIM systems. To overcome this problem, a set of Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) has been proposed as a standard for the construction industry. Building on IFC, the ifcOWL ontology was developed in order to facilitate representation (...)

Fear Influences Phantom Sound Percepts in an Anechoic Room.Sam Denys, Rilana F. F. Cima, Thomas E. Fuller, An-Sofie Ceresa, Lauren Blockmans, Johan W. S. Vlaeyen & Nicolas Verhaert - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Aims and hypothesesIn an environment of absolute silence, researchers have found many of their participants to perceive phantom sounds. With this between-subject experiment, we aimed to elaborate on these research findings, and specifically investigated whether–in line with the fear-avoidance model of tinnitus perception and reactivity–fear or level of perceived threat influences the incidence and perceptual qualities of phantom sound percepts in an anechoic room. We investigated the potential role of individual differences in anxiety, negative affect, noise sensitivity and subclinical hearing (...)

Carl F. H. Henry’s Regenerational Model of Evangelism and Social Concern and the Promise of an Evangelical Consensus.Jerry M. Ireland - 2019 - Perichoresis 17 (3):25-41.
Carl F. H. Henry has widely been acknowledged for his contributions to evangelical social concern. What has not been fully appreciated though is theological foundations that undergirded Henry’s priority model as it relates to the relationship between the church social and evangelistic mandates. For Henry, the key to both was the doctrine of revelation, and this foundation enabled Henry to uniquely argue for both integration and prioritization. As such, Henry presents a challenge to many contemporary (...)

The spectacular and dramatic effects of changing seasons have been a source of inspiration for artists through the ages. Pennsylvania Seasons is a delightful collection of nature-themed poems paired with magisterial landscape photography that captures all the mercurial moods of summer, autumn, winter, and spring. Overflowing with visual and lyric imagery, this book celebrates natural wonders, some preserved in public parks and forests and others lurking in hidden places. Fraud: The World of Ona'ah.Henri Atlan & Nils F. Schott - 2013 - Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press.
We can calculate financial fraud, but how do we measure bad faith? How can we evaluate the words of the pharmaceutical industry or of eco-scientific ideologies, or the subtle deception found in political scheming? Henri Atlan sheds light on these questions through the concept of _ona'ah_, which in Hebrew refers to both fraud in financial transactions and the verbal injury inflicted by speech. The world of _ona'ah_ is a world of an "in-between," where the impossible purity of absolute Platonic truth (...)

    …F and Liquid.Henry M. Hoenigswald - 1990 - Classical Quarterly 40 (01):272-.
It used to be thought that, just as word-initialfl… and fr… behaved likepl…, pr…, tr…, etc., in not producing a long syllable when following a word-final short vowel, just so word-internal …fl… and …fr… allowed both the short and, except for the pre-classical scenic poets, the long scansion. It was implied that these clusters oscillated with the same degree of freedom which is the well-known characteristic of the stop-and-liquid clusters. The difficulty is, of course, that evidence can be no more (...)
