    Perspectives on Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research.M. Ali Ülkü, Andrea M. Karkowski & Terry D. Lahm - 2018 - Educational Studies 44 (3):247-263.
Undergraduate Research provides deeper experiential learning opportunities for students while increasing their self-efficacy, academic success and motivation to pursue graduate studies. Many real-world problems require an (...) integrated solution and collaboration across different disciplines; therefore, it is important that students develop skills to work across disciplines on challenging research problems. As types and complexity of UR increase, Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research has become more prevalent, but little is known about it. We define IDUR asstudent-faculty collaboration to examine, increase, and share new knowledge or works relevant to research questions the investigation of which necessitates an interdisciplinary approach”. From the faculty perspective, and based on the results of a national sample of higher learning institutions in the U.S., we outline the enablers of and barriers to IDUR and provide quantitative and qualitative insights. Survey results show that, irrespective of the size of the institution at which they work, faculty members value mentoring students conducting IDUR although it brings with it some challenges. Our findings may help institutions better facilitate IDUR projects and inform faculty development opportunities that deepen student learning and retention via enhanced curricula in which IDUR is embedded. Self-Interest, Self-Deception and the Ethics of Commerce.M. Ali Khan - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 52 (2):189-206.
On taking the common distinction between the legal and the ethical as a point of departure, and in an effort to understand Marshall's approach to self-interest (...), and thereby to his conception of an ethics of commerce, I read three of his essays in the light of some non-technical writings of Frank Hahn and three other Cambridge intellectuals. My larger project connects self-interest and self-deception to a possible ethics of theorizing in economics, and thereby to the ethics of the relationship between the theorist and the theorized, the analyst and the analyzed. Prediction of Future Terrorist Activities Using Deep Neural Networks.M. Irfan Uddin, Nazir Zada, Furqan Aziz, Yousaf Saeed, Asim Zeb, Syed Atif Ali Shah, Mahmoud Ahmad Al-Khasawneh & Marwan Mahmoud - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-16.
One of the most important threats to todays civilization is terrorism. Terrorism not only disturbs the law and order situations in a society but also affects (...)the quality of lives of humans and makes them suppressed physically and emotionally and deprives them of enjoying life. The more the civilizations have advanced, the more the people are working towards exploring different mechanisms to protect the mankind from terrorism. Different techniques have been used as counterterrorism to protect the lives of individuals in society and to improve the quality of life in general. Machine learning methods have been recently explored to develop techniques for counterterrorism based on artificial intelligence. Since deep learning has recently gained more popularity in machine learning domain, in this paper, these techniques are explored to understand the behavior of terrorist activities. Five different models based on deep neural network are created to understand the behavior of terrorist activities such as is the attack going to be successful or not? Or whether the attack is going to be suicide or not? Or what type of weapon is going to be used in the attack? Or what type of attack is going to be carried out? Or what region is going to be attacked? The models are implemented in single-layer neural network, five-layer DNN, and three traditional machine learning algorithms, i.e., logistic regression, SVM, and Naïve Bayes. The performance of the DNN is compared with NN and the three machine learning algorithms, and it is demonstrated that the performance in DNN is more than 95% in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-Score, while ANN and traditional machine learning algorithms have achieved a maximum of 83% accuracy. This concludes that DNN is a suitable model to be used for predicting the behavior of terrorist activities. Our experiments also demonstrate that the dataset for terrorist activities is big data; therefore, a DNN is a suitable model to process big data and understand the underlying patterns in the dataset. Analyzing The Womens Role In Engineering And Science.M. Sadiq Ali Khan, Muhammad Nadeemullah & Ghazal Khwaja Humayyun Akhtar - 2014 - Pakistan Journal of Gender Studies 9 (1):13-22.
A womens career till middle of the 20th century was not more than a school teacher, a librarian, a social worker or a nurse. A woman (...)really had to work hard to earn less pay for the same job where men are highly paid, in this male-dominating society. The birth of Computer age opens the door of a whole new type of career for women: programming; the process of enabling machines to do a certain task by writing a set of instructions. Historically and conventionally, presence of women associated with field of engineering and science have been less prominent as compared to their counterpart. However, recent efforts initiated through various organizations, governmental and nongovernmental, attempting development of interest, promoting significance, increasing awareness and creating opportunities have improved statistics considerably. Globally, involvement of women with engineering and science has always been noticeably low. In this research article, we analyze the role of women in engineering and science, specially the science of information technology discipline and highlighting the causes of womens experience and work role in a male dominating environment. 32. Biopower, Governmentality, and Capitalism Through the Lenses of Freedom: A Conceptual Enquiry.Ali M. Rizvi - 2012 - Pakistan Business Review 14 (3):490-517.
In this paper I propose a framework to understand the transition in Foucaults work from the disciplinary model to the governmentality model. Foucaults work on power (...) emerges within the general context of an expression of capitalist rationality and the nature of freedom and power within it. I argue that, thus understood, Foucaults transition to the governmentality model can be seen simultaneously as a deepening recognition of what capitalism is and how it works, but also as a recognition of the changing historical nature of the actually existing capitalisms and their specifically situated historical needs. I then argue that the disciplinary model should be understood as a contingent response to the demands of early capitalism, and argue that with the maturation of the capitalist enterprise many of those responses are no longer necessary. New realities require new responses; although this does not necessarily result in the abandonment of the earlier disciplinary model, it does require their reconfiguration according to the changed situation and the new imperatives following from it. The problem of finite-time stability of switched genetic regulatory networks with time-varying delays via Wirtingers integral inequality is addressed in this study. A novel Lyapunov (...)Krasovskii functional is proposed to capture the dynamical characteristic of GRNs. Using Wirtingers integral inequality, reciprocally convex combination technique and the average dwell time method conditions in the form of linear matrix inequalities are established for finite-time stability of switched GRNs. The applicability of the developed finite-time stability conditions is validated by numerical results. (shrink)

Thus, we investigated the association between combined neck or back pain and psychological distress/morbidity.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia, including 1,003 individuals. The questionnaire comprised of General Health Questionnaire-12 and some questions about neck and back pain. Data analysis was done using statistical software SPSS version 26.0.ResultsThe results of the multivariate analysis revealed a significant positive association between neck/back pain status and total GHQ score. Having neck/back pain had almost a 2.5 times greater risk of psychological distress/morbidity. Further, females were more likely to have a higher risk of psychological distress/morbidity than males while adjusting for sociodemographic and clinical characteristics.ConclusionThe combination of neck and back pain was significantly associated with the Saudi populations psychological problems. Therefore, the Saudi government needs to devise high-risk strategies and allocate adequate resources to the cause so that at-risk people can be shielded from the adverse complications arising from this condition in the long run. Physics of Strength and Plasticity.Ali S. Argon (ed.) - 2003 - MIT Press.
The title of this book is derived from a graduate course in which Professor Egon Orowan presented to M.I.T. students a clear and simple picture of (...) the basic concepts in crystal plasticity and the mechanics of fracture of materials. Since the publication of his pioneering papers on dislocations and atomic mechanisms of fracture in the early 1930's,Professor Orowan has been one of the principal contributors to the field of physics of plasticity and strength. During the past 10 to 15 years, the perfection of many direct experimental methods has caused a great increase of activity in the elucidation of the effects of dislocations on mechanical and physical properties. Equally intensive activity is taking place in the field of physics and mechanics of fracture processes. Professor Ali Argon felt that the retirement of Professor Orowan from the M.I.T. faculty was an appropriate occasion to take stock of the developments in the immediate past and to produce a needed synthesis of this technologically important field. For this purpose he invited 37 of the world's leading figures in the field to contribute theoretical papers of original work. The 17 papers on the Physics of Plasticity fall into two categories: Individual Dislocations and Basic Deformation Mechanisms, and Hardening Mechanisms and Dislocation Dynamics. The 10 papers on the Physics of Strength concentrate on Cracks and Fracture, and Geology. (shrink)

    Sulle Nere Ali dei Sogni: Costantino Manasse e L'ambiguitá Onirica.Aglae M. V. Pizzone - 2011 - Byzantinische Zeitschrift 103 (2):679-698.
Moving from four fragments of Aristander and Callithea , this article explores the narrative and ideological meaning of dreams in Constantine Manasses' narrative. Fr. 47, in particular, encloses (...) a quotation from Euripides , which has been put in connection with the commentary on Aristotle's work De divinatione per somnia written by Michael of Ephesus. Nevertheless the arguments for a direct connection between the two texts are not cogent. On the contrary there is a wide range of patristic, theological and philosophical texts showing a strong and ongoing interest in Byzantine culture for the psychological aspects of the oneiric processes. This background is reflected both in Constantine's novel and in his Chronicle, where he reworks and adapts the contemporary debates for narrative purposes. (shrink)
