    Interpreting Davidson's Omniscient Interpreter.Richard N. Manning - 1995 - Canadian Journal of Philosophy 25 (3):335-374.
Donald Davidson infamously claims that belief is in its nature veridical, and that skepticism is for this reason fundamentally incoherent. To those who take the issue of external world skepticism seriously, Davidson's arguments may seem to involve a conjuring trick. In particular, his invocation of an ‘omniscient interpreter’, whose intelligibility supposedly ensures that our beliefs must be largely true, has the air of incense and lantern-rubbing about it. Davidson's claim has received considerable critical response in the literature, almost all of (...)

    Joint distributions and local realism in the higher-spin Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen experiment.N. D. Mermin & Gina M. Schwarz - 1982 - Foundations of Physics 12 (2):101-135.
A method is given to determine whether or not the distribution functions describing the two spin measurements in the spin-s Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen experiment are compatible with the existence of distributions describing three spin measurements (not all of which can actually be performed). When applied to the spin-1/2 case the method gives the results of Wigner, or of Clauser, Holt, Horne, and Shimony, depending on whether or not the two-spin distributions are assumed to have the forms given by the quantum theory. Generalizations (...)

    Patients' privacy and satisfaction in the emergency department: a descriptive analytical study.N. D. Nayeri & M. Aghajani - 2010 - Nursing Ethics 17 (2):167-177.
Respecting privacy and patients’ satisfaction are amongst the main indicators of quality of care and one of the basic goals of health services. This study, carried out in 2007, aimed to investigate the extent to which patient privacy is observed and its correlation with patient satisfaction in three emergency departments of Tehran University of Medical Science, Iran. Questionnaire data were collected from a convenience sample of 360 patients admitted to emergency departments and analysed using SPSS software. The results indicated that, (...)

Irreducibly Thick Evaluation is not Thinly Evaluative.N. D. Cannon - 2020 - Ethical Theory and Moral Practice 23 (3-4):651-666.
In this paper, I criticize the pairing of irreducible thickness with the traditional view of evaluation which says evaluation is a matter of encoding good or bad in some way. To do this, I first explicate the determination view, which holds that irreducibly thick concepts are to thin concepts as determinates are to determinables. I then show that, even if the determination view did establish irreducible thickness, it would not have proven that the evaluative is well understood as being an (...)

    Formal Representation of Intentionally Structured Systems. [REVIEW]D. B. N. - 1961 - Review of Metaphysics 15 (1):195-195.
This is a first attempt to formalize the language required for analysis of purposive organizations or systems into the subordinate systems of which they organically consist. The authors take a philosophic position midway between Atomism and the Absolute; like Aristotle, they take a finite, complex individual as the ultimate referent of explanation. The sole primitive is "s///tOx," interpreted as "upon analytic dissection, the system t organized by [the property] x." It is claimed without argument that the relationship is independent of (...)

    Markov Learning Models for Multiperson Interactions. [REVIEW]D. B. N. - 1961 - Review of Metaphysics 15 (1):196-196.
An application of probabilistic, stimulus-response learning theory to game-like small group situations. The theory is axiomatic, precise, and quantitative; and is deductively fruitful. There is a running comparison of the predictive success of the stimulus-response theory and game theory. The authors claim to have demonstrated "in empirical detail and with quantitative accuracy" that "the social situation, qua social, does not require the introduction of new concepts" beyond those of stimulus-response learning theory. --N. D. B. Jr.

Another exceptionally fine text by Suppes. Designed for those who can follow a mathematical argument, but presupposes no special knowledge of mathematics or symbolic logic. The system developed is that of Zermelo-Fraenkel. Especially noteworthy is the discussion of the exact role played by the various axioms.--N. D. B., Jr.

A profession selling out: lamenting the paradigm shift in physician advertising.N. D. Tomycz - 2006 - Journal of Medical Ethics 32 (1):26-28.
For generations following the first American Medical Association Code of Ethics in 1847, the relationship between doctors and advertising remained unambiguous—advertising was forbidden. In 1975, however, the Federal Trade Commission accused the profession of “restraint of trade” and legally persuaded doctors to permit advertising amongst their clan. As the 1970s witnessed the relentless burgeoning of healthcare expenditure, physicians accepted the blame for immuring themselves from the natural forces of economics. American physicians were bullied to embrace advertising under the delusion that (...)

    Apology of Socratic Studies.N. D. Smith & T. C. Brickhouse - 2003 - Polis 20 (1-2):108-127.
In this paper, we defend Socratic studies as a research programme against several recent attacks, including at least one recently published in Polis. Critics have argued that the study of Socrates, based upon evidence mostly or entirely derived from some set of Plato’s dialogues, is sfounded upon faulty and indefensible historical or hermeneutical technique. We begin by identifying what we believe are the foundational principles of Socratic studies, as the field has been pursued in recent years, and we then show (...)

Some statistical questions that arise in studies of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations are given precise and complete answers for a very simple but artificial set of pair distributions. Some recent results and conjectures about hidden variable representations of the more complex distributions that describe the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen experiment are examined in the light of the behavior of the simple model.
