The Eros of Counter Education.Pinhas Luzon - 2016 - Journal of Philosophy of Education 50 (3):461-473.
Erotic Counter Education is the educational position of the late Ilan Gur- Ze'ev. In ECE Gur-Ze'ev combines two opposing positions in the philosophy of education, one teleological and anti-utopian, the other teleological and utopian. In light of this unique combination, I ask what mediates between these two poles and suggest that the answer lies in the concept of eros. Following a preliminary presentation of the concept of eros in ECE, I define it as a form of transcendental cognition that distinguishes (...)

Heuristics and Biases in Mental Arithmetic: Revisiting and Reversing Operational Momentum.Samuel Shaki, Michal Pinhas & Martin H. Fischer - 2018 - Thinking and Reasoning 24 (2):138-156.
Mental arithmetic is characterised by a tendency to overestimate addition and to underestimate subtraction results: the operational momentum effect. Here, motivated by contentious explanations of this effect, we developed and tested an arithmetic heuristics and biases model that predicts reverse OM due to cognitive anchoring effects. Participants produced bi-directional lines with lengths corresponding to the results of arithmetic problems. In two experiments, we found regular OM with zero problems but reverse OM with non-zero problems. In a third experiment, we tested (...)

  5. Losing Grip on the Third Realm.Bar Luzon & Preston Werner - forthcoming - Analysis.
Naive realism in philosophy of perception is the view that (successful) perception involves a direct relation between perceiving subjects and the world. The naive realist says that your perception of a cat on the mat is a worldly relation which is partially constituted by the cat and the mat; a spatio-temporal chunk of the world is presenting itself to you. Recently, Elijah Chudnoff and John Bengson have independently developed an extension of this view to intellectual experiences, or intuitions, for traditionally (...)

The Practice of Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide Meets the Concept of Legalization.Golan Luzon - 2019 - Criminal Law and Philosophy 13 (2):329-345.
This article explores attempts at legalization of the practice of euthanasia and assisted suicide. Although in many countries there have been high levels of public support for euthanasia and assisted suicide, in most of them, no legislative activity has taken place concerning these practices, and there is a lack of clarity about what is permitted and what is not. I argue that accurate definition of the relevant concepts and a clear delineation of the territory of the debate would help draw (...)

  12. The Approximate Number System Represents Rational Numbers: The Special Case of an Empty Set.Michal Pinhas, Rut Zaks-Ohayon & Joseph Tzelgov - 2021 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 44.
We agree with Clarke and Beck that the approximate number system represents rational numbers, and we demonstrate our support by highlighting the case of the empty set – the non-symbolic manifestation of zero. It is particularly interesting because of its perceptual and semantic uniqueness, and its exploration reveals fundamental new insights about how numerical information is represented.

The Role of Culture in Farmer Learning and Technology Adoption: A Case Study of Farmer Field Schools Among Rice Farmers in Central Luzon, Philippines.Florencia G. Palis - 2006 - Agriculture and Human Values 23 (4):491-500.
The goal of this paper is to show how culture – shared norms and values – is challenged and used to facilitate cooperative behavior within the context of farmer field schools (FFS) in central Luzon, Philippines. The success of the FFS is primarily associated with cultural norms that encourage experiential and collective learning and eventually lead to the adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) methods among the farmers. The study was conducted in central Luzon, the rice granary region (...)

In Search of Non-Abstract Representation of Numbers: Maybe on the Right Track, but Still Not There.Joseph Tzelgov & Michal Pinhas - 2009 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 32 (3-4):353 - 354.
We agree that the default numerical representation is best accessed by probing automatic processing. The locus of this representation is apparently at the horizontal intraparietal sulcus (HIPS), the convergence zone of magnitude information. The parietal lobes are the right place to look for non-abstract representation of magnitude, yet the proof for that is still to be found.

Political Power and Economic Policy: Theory, Analysis, and Empirical Applications.Gordon C. Rausser, Johan Swinnen & Pinhas Zusman - 2011 - Cambridge University Press.
This book analyzes the links between political economics, governance structures and the distribution of political power in economic policy making. The book theoretically explains and empirically quantifies these interactions. The analysis includes both public good policies and redistributive policies. Part I of the book presents the conceptual foundations of political-economic bargaining and interest group analysis. After presenting the underlying theory, Part II of the book examines ideology, prescription and political power coefficients; Part III analyzes a number of specific structures; and (...)

Philosophy and Transformative Learning: Lessons in Natural Resource Management From Cordillera Communities.Julius D. Mendoza & Lorelei C. Mendoza - 2013 - Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture 17 (2):113 - 148.
In this paper, the objects of philosophical reflection are the important lessons learned from a participatory action research program conducted by the Cordillera Studies Center of UP Baguio in Sagada, Mountain Province, in Northern Luzon, Philippines, which ran from March 1997 to February 2001. This research program used the Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) approach. Concepts of philosophy are made to re-describe “second order” concepts of theory, as well as “first order” concepts of community-based natural resource management research, (...)

Preserving Cultural Heritage Through the Valorization of Cordillera Heirloom Rice in the Philippines.Subir Bairagi, Marie Claire Custodio, Alvaro Durand-Morat & Matty Demont - 2021 - Agriculture and Human Values 38 (1):257-270.
For centuries, heirloom rice varieties have been grown on the terraces of the Cordillera Mountains of Luzon, Philippines, terroirs known for their significant historical, cultural, and aesthetic values. However, heritage heirloom rice farming is gradually being abandoned, mainly because of its lower productivity and the struggle of the sector to create a sustainable niche market for heirloom rice by branding its cultural, social, and nutritional values. We propose several demand-side intervention strategies for the valorization of heirloom rice. To support (...)
