We consider separably closed fields of characteristic $p > 0$ and fixed imperfection degree as modules over a skew polynomial ring. We axiomatize the corresponding theory and we show that it is complete and that it admits quantifier elimination in the usual module language augmented with additive functions which are the analog of the $p$-component functions.

The aim of this study was to explore the note-taking experiences of university students using paper-based and paperless resources. By means of a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, the note-taking experiences of 18 students from an international program at a university in Belgium were examined throughout a semester. In order to document these students’ practices with paper-based and paperless resources, four data collection methods were used: in-depth interviews observations focus group discussions and document analysis of students’ lecture notes. The results showed that (...) students experience note-taking as a complex phenomenon in which lived body, lived human relations, lived space and lived time come into play, and in which they try to find a balance between multiple engagements, between autonomy and authority, between attention and distraction, and between being original and mirroring others. This struggle for balance occurs irrespective of which medium they choose to use. These results provide an in-depth view of the phenomenon, and also highlight the complexity of the note-taking experience. (shrink)

We present a finitary regularly algebraizable logic not finitely equivalential, for every similarity type. We associate to each of these logics a class of algebras with an equivalence relation, with the property that in this class, the identity is atomatically definable but not finitely atomatically definable.

The present article is devoted to two issues. The first is the identification of lead and tin in medieval Arabic alchemy. The second is the investigation of whether Arabic alchemists differentiate between these problematic substances or not. These two issues are investigated in the light of a comparison which is made between the facts that are stated about the two problematic substances in the original Arabic alchemical works and those stated in modern chemical literature. It is proved that Arabic alchemists (...) made a sharp distinction between lead and tin. Also, it becomes clear that these two metals were used in a satisfactory purity in the era of medieval Arabic alchemy. As a consequence of the present study, some conclusions are drawn about the existence of some categories of ‘derivatives’ of fusible bodies in Arabic alchemy which are degenerate to modern categories of oxides, carbonates, etc. (shrink)

Science has always been tightly associated with environmental ethics in a way traditional ethics has not. However, despite this proximity, science has had a merely informational role, where it must inform ethics but not intervene in ethical judgment. Science is seen as an amoral enterprise, requiring an ethics rather than recommending one. In this paper I try to go against this common view. First, I give a critique of the naturalistic fallacy following the lines of Frankena. Then I go on (...) to describe the two possible roles science can have in ethical though, and in environmental ethics in particular. As it turns out, science does not only inform ethics, but can actually have moral import and intervene in moral judgment. Finally, from an ecocentric point of view, I try to illustrate this last point by construing the ecological notion of resilience as a moral boundary—a scientifically determined boundary between right and wrong. Evaluative markers of diminution and augmentation typically express quantity or intensity. Prior evidence suggests that they also convey emotions, although it remains unexplored as to whether this function is mediated by their role in expressing quantification/intensification. Here we investigated the effects of evaluative suffixes on the assessment of word affective properties by asking participants (N = 300) to score valence and arousal features for augmentatives, diminutives and base words with negative, positive or neutral valence. Diminutives and, to a lesser extent, (...) augmentatives were assessed more positively than base forms in negative words and more negatively than bases in positive words. The capacity of diminution to express attenuated emotions is in line with its function in conveying quantity. By contrast, valence effects for augmentatives suggests a role in expressing pejoration and amelioration that is not mediated by quantification. With regard to arousal, negative, neutral and positive augmentatives showed higher scores than base words, which, in addition, were also rated higher than diminutives. These incremental effects suggest that suffixes which convey larger quantity are also associated with increased arousal. Thus, with the exception of valence effects in augmentatives, it seems that evaluative suffixes encode both valence and arousal through quantification. (shrink)

ABSTRACT My aim in this paper is to present a pluralist thesis about the inferential role of logical constants, which embraces classical, relevant, linear and ordered logic. That is, I defend that a logical constant c has more than one correct inferential role. The thesis depends on a particular interpretation of substructural logics' vocabulary, according to which classical logic captures the literal meaning of logical constants and substructural logics encode a pragmatically enriched sense of those connectives. The paper is divided (...) into four parts: first, I introduce the motivation for the pluralist thesis of the paper; second I introduce the calculus for the different logics endorsed in the pluralist thesis; third, I motivate how the different behaviors of the logical vocabulary of these logics can be pragmatically interpreted, and fourth, I motivate how the different inferential roles that each substructural logic attribute to logical constants can coexist, and how we should reason with a logical constant c given this plurality. The aim of this paper is to give a general solution to the paradoxes of the material conditional, including the paradoxes generated by embedded conditionals. The solution consists in a pragmatic reinterpretation of the formal languages of classical logic LK and relevant logic LR as presented in Paoli. In particular I argue that the material conditional in the classical logic LK captures the truth conditions of “if...then”, but ignores certain pragmatic enrichments that are associated to it, while relevant logic LR (...) can give a systematic diagnostic of the cases in which a conditional is pragmatically enriched and those cases in which it is not. This diagnostic shows the reason why the paradoxes seem unacceptable and why they are, nevertheless, truth-preserving. This reinterpretation will also cover the solution that Paoli gives to McGee’s paradoxes of the Modus Ponens. (shrink)

In this paper, I present an interpretation of Kant’s view that reason’s hypostasis of the idea of a sum-total of reality is dogmatic and illegitimate. In the section on the ‘Transcendental Ideal’, the second section of the Ideal of Pure Reason chapter in the Critique of Pure Reason, Kant starts by describing reason’s procedure from the affirmation of the principle of thoroughgoing determination to the hypostasis in question. According to the interpretation I defend, the argument for hypostasis deployed in this (...) section constitutes an improvement upon an argument defended by the pre-critical Kant himself in his 1673 essay “The Only Possible Argument in Support of a Demonstration of the Existence of God”. By making reference to the concept of omnitudo realitatis, the argument in the ‘Transcendental Ideal’ section presents a much more radical and convincing interpretation of the thesis that ‘possibility presupposes actuality’. Second, I present transcendental idealism and its related distinction between objects of sense and objects in general as the main dissuasive argument of the critical philosopher against hypostasis. Finally, I consider an argument against hypostasis that is independent of transcendental idealism: the threat of set-theoretical paradoxes if we hypostatize the relevant idea, intended as the concept of an absolutely comprehensive totality. RESUMEN Este artículo pretende comprender la filosofía de Platón como un ejercicio esencialmente político. Esto implica, sin embargo, distinguir cómo se ejerce esta filosofía política, su sentido y alcance. Muchos estudiosos han atribuido a Platón el proyecto político que Sócrates desarrolla en la República. Sin embargo, el símil de la caverna da cuenta de la imposibilidad o, al menos, de la interna problematicidad de tal proyecto, por lo cual se sugiere que no es en el diálogo República donde se encontraría (...) la auténtica filosofía política de Platón, sino en los denominados diálogos aporéticos. En estos diálogos no se habla sobre una posible ciudad, sino que se ejercita de manera viva una política desarrollada por la dialéctica terapéutica de Sócrates, cuya tarea es desvelar la virtud mediante el desenmascaramiento de los rostros de la ciudad. ABSTRACT The following paper contends that Plato's philosophy is essentially a political activity. This imply, however, to distinguish how this political philosophy carries out, its meaning and scope. Many scholars have attributed to Plato the political project, which Socrates develops in the dialogue Republic. Nevertheless, the simile of the cave reveals the impossibility of such a project or, at least, the serious problems that lie behind it. So, I suggest, that is not in the dialogue Republic where it finds Plato's authentic political philosophy, but in the so-called aporetic dialogues. In these dialogues it does not discuss about a possible city, but it exercises in a lively way a politics builted by Socrates' dialectic therapy, whose task is unveiling the virtue through the unmasking the faces of the city. Dentro del contexto histórico de la sociedad tecnológica parece urgente considerar los alcances insólitos y los problemas éticos que suscita la provocación técnica actual, los cuales mueven a poner en cuestión la provocación productiva que el hombre ejerce respecto de la naturaleza. Sin embargo antes de tal cuestionamiento es necesario encontrar una vía de acceso a la esencia originaria de la técnica. Este artículo propone un camino de comprensión de la técnica a partir del sentido de la ποíησις según el (...) pensamiento de Platón, en cuyo “Banquete” puede extraerse cómo la τέχνη, en vez de ejercer una producción provocante, depende ella misma de la provocación de la naturaleza. According to the historical context of technological society, it seems urgent to consider the unusual scope and the ethical issues raised by the present technological provocation, which lead to questioning the productive provocation which man exerts over nature. Nevertheless before such questioning takes place, it is necessary to access the primary essence of technique. This paper sets a path for the comprehension of technique starting from the meaning of ποíησις based on Plato’s ideas. In his work "Symposium", technique emerges as τέχνη, which instead of exerting a provocative production, depends on the provocation of nature. (shrink)

I worked for many years constructing my version of the global case but, as I continued to try to strengthen it, I slowly began to lose confidence. My unease began with several personal experiences. One of our children had a common but annoying physical ailment, for which our pediatrician prescribed a very expensive nasal spray. This article aims to clarify the relationship between the Truth and Justification in the philosophies of Jürgen Habermas and Richard Rorty from their discussions. The thesis that I advocate is that the relationship between Truth and Justification depends on the Ontological and Epistemological assumptions that each maintains and is not a matter of conditions of speech as stated by Habermas.

The biosciences have become information sciences, in which knowledge is often produced in silica, by the manipulation and analysis of large datasets. Genomics has been at the forefront of the data explosion and is a model for bioscience as a large-scale endeavor. Large genome research datasets are frequently shared through research repositories. To protect the interests of people from whom the data were derived , human data are often shared through a controlled access mechanism, in which data repositories can, in (...) theory, place limitations on who uses the data and for what purpose. Controlled access is an innovative governance mechanism, but it may not protect data sources the way policy makers intended. Here, I describe one controlled access process in some detail, and provide insight into how and why researchers fail to comply with data use restrictions. (shrink)

I argue for a version of logical pluralism based on the plurality of legitimate formalizations of the logical vocabulary. In particular, I argue that the apparent rivalry between classical and relevant logic can be resolved, given that both logics capture and formalize normative and legitimate senses of logical consequence: classical logic encodes “follows from” as truth preservation and captures the truth conditions of the logical constants, while relevant logic encodes a notion of “follows from” which, apart from preserving truth, avoids (...) the violation of certain Gricean maxims and captures a different inferential role for the same logical constants, enriching their meaning pragmatically. Psikolojinin dinle ilişkisi ortaya çıktığı dönemlerden bugüne kadar “bir dargın bir barışık kardeşler” şeklinde seyrederken, amaçlarındaki ortaklık kaynak ve metodolojilerindeki ayrılık onları üvey kardeşler gibi göstermektedir. Zaman içinde birbirinin varlığını tanıyan bu disiplinler birbirinin bilgi ve uygulamalarından yararlanma yoluna gitmişlerdir. Din ve maneviyatın insanların hayatlarındaki belirleyici etkileri psikolojinin de dikkatini çekmiş ve dini/manevi unsurların psikoterapilere dahil edilmesini gerektirmiştir. Bu makalenin amacı, din-psikoloji ilişkisine psikoterapilerdeki dini izler açısından bakmaktır. Bunun için öncelikle psikoterapilere dini/manevi unsurları dahil etmenin gerekliliği konusu ele alınacaktır. Devamında (...) psikoterapilerle dini/manevi prensip ve pratiklerle entegre edebilmek için psikoterapistlerin sahip olması gereken bilgiler; pratikte psikoterapilerle dini/manevi unsurları bütünleştirirken dikkat edilmesi gerekenlerle çeşitli psikoterapilerde bulunan dini/manevi izler konuları işlenecektir. Makale bu konudaki sınırlı Türkiye çalışmalarıyla birlikte yurt dışında psikoterapileri dini/manevi prensip ve pratiklerle bütünleştiren örnekleri kapsamaktadır. Bu konudaki teori ve pratikler, ülkemize örnek teşkil etmesi bakımından önem taşımaktadır. Makalenin amacı psikoterapilerdeki dini izlere işaret ederek psikolojiyle din arasında aslında o kadar da derin bir uçurumun olmadığını göstermektir. Özet Din ve psikolojinin hedeflerindeki ortak yön bilimsel olarak ortaya konmuş durumdadır. Kültürel, dini, manevi unsurların profesyonel ve klinik psikolojik müdahaleler, psikoterapiler ve ruh sağlığı hizmetlerinde kullanımını ve gerekliliğini vurgulayan ve uygulamalar sunan çok sayıda çalışma mevcuttur. Bu çalışmalarda danışanın dini/manevi kaynaklarının terapi sürecine dahil edilmesi esastır. Bu çerçevede gerçekleştirilen terapilerin özellikle dindar danışanların tedavilerinde, tedavi hedefleri dini görüşleri çerçevesinde ele alındığında olumlu sonuçlar verdiği kanıtlanmıştır. Ancak rahatsızlığın biyolojik boyutunun ve/veya aşırı psikopatolojik olması durumunda sadece dini müdahalelerin yeterli olmayacağı bilinmelidir. Bu makalenin konusu dini/manevi prensiplerin psikoterapilerdeki izlerini sürerek psikoloji ve dinin arasında sanıldığı kadar derin bir uçurumun olmadığını göstermektir. Dünyanın birçok yerinde Batı standartlarında terapi yapılmaktadır. Oysa Doğu insanının ruh sağlığı veya bozukluğunun Batı kriterlerine göre belirlenmesi bazı sakıncaları beraberinde getirir. Dini/manevi yaşantının kültürlerinin önemli bir parçası olduğu toplumların hastalık ve tedavi algısında din belirleyici bir unsurdur. Bozulan ruh sağlığı veya psikolojik rahatsızlıklarda maneviyat önemli ve birincil bir başa çıkma kaynağıdır. Toplumsal ve kültürel gerçeklerle beraber empirik çalışmalar da dua, tövbe, meditasyon, zikir gibi dini uygulamaların ruh ve beden sağlığına olan olumlu etkilerini ortaya koyar. Bu bilgiler ışığında psikoterapilerin sosyo-kültürel açıdan gözden geçirilmesi ve inanç ile dini uygulamaları da kapsayan kültüre duyarlı psikoterapilerin geliştirilmesi önemlidir. Din, inanç, maneviyat gibi konuların psikoterapilerde işlevselleştirilmesinin bir başka gereği bu tecrübelerin insanların hayatları üzerindeki belirleyici etkileridir. Dinin geniş etkisi söz konusuyken sadece psikolojik müdahalelerin insanın psikolojik ihtiyaçlarını gidermede yetersiz kalacağı ortadadır. Dindar danışanlar terapide doğrudan dini uygulamalar bekleyebildikleri gibi dini prensiplere açık ve saygılı, kendi dini inancı hakkında konuşabilen, terapiye dini unsurları katan bir terapisti bekledikleri bulunmuştur. Dini/manevi unsurlarla terapinin bütünleştirilmesi için terapistler din/maneviyat konularında bilgili ve eğitimli olmalıdır. Bununla beraber terapist kendi dünya görüşü, dini bağlılığı ve manevi dünyası hakkında bilgili ve bilinçli olmalıdır. Ancak terapistin de dindar olması veya danışanıyla aynı dini paylaşması gerekmez. Danışanının inancında bulduğu güç ve desteği terapide etkin ve verimli birer kaynak olarak kullanabilmek için terapistin bu unsurlara açık ve anlayışlı olması yeterlidir. Terapistin din konusunda bilgisiz olması danışanın dini önemsemesi durumunda sakıncalı olabilir. Çünkü psikoterapilerde manevi yaklaşım, danışanların ana kaynaklarından birinin maneviyatları olduğuna dayanır. Bu kaynak terapide danışanının sorunlarıyla ve engelleriyle başa çıkmasına yardımcı olabilir. Danışanın dini ve kültürü hakkında bilgi sahibi olunması danışanın algı ve kabullerini öğrenmek adına da önemli olabilir. Çünkü insanların hastalık anlayışları, ruh hastalığının sebepleri hakkındaki inanışları, sağlık sisteminden beklentileri önemlidir ve terapi seçimiyle yardım arama yollarını etkiler. Psikoterapiyi manevi/dini prensiplerle entegre ederken terapistlerin bir takım etik prensiplere uymaları gerekir. Aynı zamanda psikolojik rahatsızlığın kaynağı ve derecesi de önemlidir. Dini ritüellerin ve manevi müdahalelerin faydaları yaygın olsa da her halükârda her vakada dindarlığın/maneviyatın sorunun mu çözümün mü bir parçası olduğuna bakılmalıdır. Dindarlığın/maneviyatın terapi sürecine dahil edilip edilemeyeceğine belirli kriterlere göre karar verirken kişinin dini/manevi yaşantısı hakkında bilgi toplamak (manevi anamnez), uygun dini yöntem ve müdahalelerin seçilmesinde faydalı olacaktır. Bugün psikoterapilerde anlam, hayatın amacı, yaşam biçimi, başa çıkma gibi konulara yer verilmektedir. Aslında bunlar dini geleneklerin de binlerce yıl öncesinden çözüm yollarıyla birlikte ortaya koydukları konulardır. Örneğin, ruh sağlığı çalışanları için belirlenmiş etik prensiplerin dini öğretilerle büyük ölçüde örtüştüğü görülür. Kişi merkezli psikoterapi yönteminde önerilen tutum ve ilişki şeklinin dini öğretilere bakıldığında insan ilişkilerinin tamamı için ön görüldüğü anlaşılır. 1960’larda başlamak üzere psikoterapide Budist öğretilere bir ilgi gözlemlenir. Budist zihin egzersizleriyle (özellikle meditasyon) kendilik algısında dönüşümler ve kalıcı bilinç değişimleri elde edilebilir. İslamiyet, Yahudilik ve Budizm gibi farklı dinler tefekkür, zikir, yoga gibi meditasyon teknikleri önerir. Katolik kilisesinde günah çıkarma olarak anılan ritüelin psikoterapideki katarsis ile benzer yanları vardır. Birçok kültürde günah itiraflarında bağışlama ritüellerinin bir şekli bulunur ve bu ritüellerin insana iyi geldiği açıklanır. Bağışlama, psikolojik ve manevi boyutları olan kompleks bir meseledir ve bilişsel, duygusal, ilişkisel ve manevi süreçleri içerir. Bu bakımdan çok sayıdaki araştırmalarda bağışlamanın dini ve psikolojik işlevlerine dikkat çekilir. Dua, şükür, umut, empati, sevgi, hoşgörü gibi birçok konu psikoterapiyle din/maneviyatın ortak ilgi alanında bulunur. Farklı psikoterapi yaklaşımlarıyla beraber özellikle pozitif psikoloji dini/manevi açıdan da değerli bulunan bu erdemleri teori ve uygulamalarına dahil etmiştir. Sonuç itibariyle, ilk bakışta aralarında derin uçurumlar var gibi görünen psikolojiyle din ve maneviyatın arasında aslında birçok ortak nokta bulunmaktadır. İnsanların zor zamanlarında dine ve maneviyata yönelmeleri bu alanları terapi sürecine dahil etmeyi kaçınılmaz kılmaktadır. Çünkü dinler, özellikle zor zamanlarda umut, anlam, başa çıkma yolları sunmaktadır. Bu gerçek, yurt dışında fark ve kabul edilerek psikoterapilerle dini/manevi uygulamaları entegre etme hareketini doğurmuştur. Bu yabancı kaynakların ülkemiz için ilham kaynağı olması ümit edilmektedir. (shrink)
