Since the 1980s, society's wealthiest members have claimed an ever-expanding share of income and property. It has been a true counterrevolution, says Pierre Rosanvallon--the end of the age of growing equality launched by the American and French revolutions. For eighteenth-century revolutionaries, equality meant understanding human beings as fundamentally alike and then creating universal political and economic rights. Rosanvallon sees the roots of today's crisis in the period 1830-1900, when industrialized capitalism threatened to quash these aspirations. By the early twentieth century, progressive forces had begun to rectify some imbalances of the Gilded Age, and the modern welfare state gradually emerged from Depression-era reforms. But new economic shocks in the 1970s began a slide toward inequality that has only gained momentum in the decades since. There is no returning to the days of the redistributive welfare state, Rosanvallon says. Rather than resort to outdated notions of social solidarity, we must instead revitalize the idea of equality according to principles of singularity, reciprocity, and communality that more accurately reflect today's realities. Synthesizing forty years' work by France's leading sociologist, this book exemplifies Bourdieu's unique ability to link sociological theory, historical information, and philosophical thought. It makes explicit the presuppositions of a state of 'scholasticism', a certain leisure liberated from the urgencies of the world. Philosophers have brought these presuppositions into the order of discourse, more to legitimate than analyze them, and this is the primary systematic, epistemological, ethical, and aesthetic error that Bourdieu subjects to methodological critique. Pascalian because he, too, was (...) concerned with symbolic power, he refused the temptation of foundationalist thinking, attended to 'ordinary people', and was determined to seek the reason for seemingly illogical behavior rather than simply condemning it. Bourdieu charts a negative philosophy, whose intellectual debt to such other 'heretical' philosophers as Wittgenstein, Austin, Dewey, and Peirce, renews traditional questioning of concepts of violence, power, time, history, the universal, and the purpose and direction of existence. Pierre Manent is one of France's leading political philosophers. L'erreur du populisme politique est de croire que la souveraineté du peuple est le fondement de la démocratie. On le sait, c'est plutôt le respect des Droits de l'Homme qui est déterminant : il en résulte le principe de la laïcité, qui a fait obstacle à la volonté de puissance de la chrétienté traditionnelle. Or, voici qu'aujourd'hui le fanatisme religieux renaît de ses cendres, ici ou là, et s'acoquine avec le populisme pour se légitimer. Comment se distancer, par la réflexion (...) critique, de ce genre de phénomène? L'intention de dominer autrui, quand on le rencontre, peut céder la place au sens de la réciprocité. Guidée par l'esprit de géométrie, la réflexion formelle le montre. Et l'alternative entre la violence et la bienveillance se répète au niveau des structures mentales : il n'est pas nécessaire de penser que tout, dans le monde humain, se réduit à des rapports de force ; il n'est pas nécessaire de s'en tenir à de telles simplifications idéologiques. On peut aussi se montrer un peu plus fin, et, pour s'y habituer, relire les origines de la philosophie démocratique moderne, de Hobbes (1588-1679) à Locke (1632-1704). (shrink)

Martin Heidegger's overt alliance with the Nazis and the specific relation between this alliance and his philosophical thought - the degree to which his concepts are linked to a thoroughly disreputable set of political beliefs - have been the topic of a storm of recent debate. Written ten years before this debate, this study by France's leading sociologist and cultural theorist is both a precursor of that debate and an analysis of the institutional mechanisms involved in the production of philosophical (...) discourse. Though Heidegger is aware of and acknowledges the legitimacy of purely philosophical issues (in his references to canonic authors, traditional problems, and respect for academic taboos), Bourdieu points out that the complexity and abstraction of Heidegger's philosophical discourse stems from its situation in the cultural field, where two social and intellentual dimensions - political thought and academic thought - intersect. Bourdieu concludes by suggesting that Heidegger should not be considered as a Nazi ideologist, that there is no place in Heidegger's philosophical ideas for a racist conception of the human being. Rather, he sees Heidegger's thought as a structural equivalent in the field of philosophy of the 'conservative revolution', of which nazism is but one manifestation. (shrink)

Why are we proposing this anthology of articles drawn from Recherches de Science Religieuse in an English translation? On the eve of its centennial celebrations, the Journal, which has numerous subscribers and readers in English-speaking countries, decided to take stock of its rich heritage in the field of theology, as in that of religious science, embodied in its many past issues and their articles. Over these years and decades, the journal has built up a corpus of documents covering information and (...) thought specific to the French-language sphere of theology and religious sciences. We are also highly aware that the thought reflected in the Journal has taken paths, if inevitably diverse, that are nonetheless rich in encounters and confrontations with what was being taught and thought elsewhere. Such a rich exchange went on over the years that the question arose a decade ago of providing a bilingual, even a trilingual edition in order to facilitate access to the Journal's content. However, opinions from the English-speaking world and beyond converged at that time to encourage us to continue with renewed purpose as witnesses and actors of this French-language realm and to remain faithful to editing the journal in French. Today, it seems to us both useful and desirable to make this theological heritage accessible to a broader public. This first anthology has thus been composed around a fundamental theme, that of faith. (shrink)

La Philosophie Française, sans guillemets, ça n'existe pas. Le présent ouvrage tente d'élucider les conditions dans lesquelles, dans la période post-révolutionnaire, l'investigation philosophique, directement investie dans les transformations de la société, a revêtu les formes singulières qui ont conduit à l'identifier comme "française". Ce phénomène complexe est examiné à partir d'exemples empruntés aux principaux courants de pensée qui, de la Première République (Sieyès) à la Troisième (Barni), ont alimenté le débat d'idées au cours du XIXe siècle, à savoir le conservatisme (...) (Bonald, Maistre, Chateaubriand), le rationalisme (les Idéologues, Cousin, Renan) et le socialisme (l'école saint-simonienne, Proudhon). Mais en réfléchissant à la constitution de ces trois idéologies, on en vient à interroger la constitution du concept même d'"idéologie". Et ce qui se découvre ainsi, c'est notre histoire, celle dont nous sommes d'autant plus tributaires que nous l'ignorons. (shrink)

La question de l'identité personnelle, sous ses deux formes : " Qui suis-je? " et " Qu'est-ce que le moi? ", a souvent été traitée par des philosophes qui ont entrepris de la résoudre en empruntant la voie du raisonnement pur. Elle est ici abordée par un autre biais, à partir de trois protocoles expérimentaux qui permettent de la saisir à vif, en situation, et non dans l'abstrait : l'ouvrage que Marc Parmentier a consacré à " la philosophie des sites (...) de rencontre ", le récit fait par Jean Genet d'un étrange épisode vécu au cours d'un chemin de fer, dont les enseignements s'étaient raccordés dans son esprit à la fréquentation de deux peintres, Rembrandt et Giacometti, la série de clichés photographiques réalisés par Cindy Sherman où, en vue de mettre en scène la mythologie de la femme américaine, elle s'est prise elle-même pour modèle. L'examen de ces expériences concrètes illustre la possibilité de faire de la philosophie autrement ; s'en dégage, non une réponse inédite à la question de l'identité personnelle, mais la confirmation du caractère définitivement aporétique des interrogations auxquelles celle-ci renvoie. Since his beginnings, Man has produced art: gests and works in some way bound to the essence of man's existence, gests and works grafted onto the epidermis of the world, yet gests and works for transcending the immediate givens, for understanding veiled realities and future possibilities: gests and works of global apprehension, brought about and nourished through the ages by elementary needs, by visceral fears, by existential hopes.

In the debates on phenomenal consciousness that occurred over the last 20 years, Sartre’s analysis of pre-reflective consciousness has often been quoted in defence of a distinction between first- and third-personal modes of givenness that naturalists reject. This distinction aims both at determining the specificity of the access one has to their own thoughts, beliefs, intentions, or desires, and at justifying the particular privilege that one enjoys while making epistemic claims about their own mental states. This chapter defends an interpretation (...) of Sartre’s theory of pre-reflective consciousness that does not put him completely at odds with the naturalist critique and stresses that one’s pre-reflective experience should not be understood in terms of first-/third-person differentiation. This pre-reflective dimension of experience nevertheless allows a peculiar access to oneself, which grants no infallible epistemic privilege to the first-person, but lays the ground for a transformative process that makes self-knowledge possible.
