  3. Gauge invariant accounts of the Higgs mechanism.Ward Struyve - 2011 - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part B: Studies in History and Philosophy of Modern Physics 42 (4):226-236.
The Higgs mechanism gives mass to Yang-Mills gauge bosons. According to the conventional wisdom, this happens through the spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetry. Yet, gauge symmetries merely reflect a redundancy in the state description and therefore the spontaneous breaking can not be an essential ingredient. Indeed, as already shown by Higgs and Kibble, the mechanism can be explained in terms of gauge invariant variables, without invoking spontaneous symmetry breaking. In this paper, we present a general discussion of such gauge invariant (...)

Client–provider relationships in a community health clinic for people who are experiencing homelessness.Abe Oudshoorn, Catherine Ward-Griffin, Cheryl Forchuk, Helene Berman & Blake Poland - 2013 - Nursing Inquiry 20 (4):317-328.
Recognizing the importance of health‐promoting relationships in engaging people who are experiencing homelessness in care, most research on health clinics for homeless persons has involved some recognition of client–provider relationships. However, what has been lacking is the inclusion of a critical analysis of the policy context in which relationships are enacted. In this paper, we question how client–provider relationships are enacted within the culture of community care with people who are experiencing homelessness and how clinic‐level and broader social and health (...)

Dark comedies invite us to laugh at something which is, at least ostensibly, not funny at all. They take an act or event that would, under most descriptions or presentations, invite pity or anger, and give it characteristics that invite amusement. It is essential to the humour of the kidnapping in The King of Comedy that it is a kidnapping. The immorality of this event is crucial to its humour.

The Expanded Evidence-Centered Design (e-ECD) for Learning and Assessment Systems: A Framework for Incorporating Learning Goals and Processes Within Assessment Design.Meirav Arieli-Attali, Sue Ward, Jay Thomas, Benjamin Deonovic & Alina A. von Davier - 2019 - Frontiers in Psychology 10.
Evidence-Centered Design (ECD) is a framework for the design and development of assessments that ensures consideration and collection of validity evidence from the onset of the test design. Blending learning and assessment requires integrating aspects of learning at the same level of rigor as aspects of testing. In this paper we describe an expansion to the ECD framework (termed e-ECD) such that it includes the specifications of the relevant aspects of learning at each of the three core models in the (...)

(2.172) At this point I usually tell the story about the anthropologist who shows a polaroid photograph of a some local scene to members of the newly discovered tribe. They can't make head nor tail of it which surprises the anthropologist until he recalls W's remark at 2.172. The (...)

Consequentialism, broadly speaking, claims that the moral factor of promoting thegoodistheonly moral factor–the right action is that which will bring about the best overall results, and, we are morally obligated to carry out actions of this sort. 1 The major objections to this moral theory center on two different issues: that it permits too much, and that it demands too much.
