Serene J. Khader’s Decolonizing Universalism presents a vision for how feminism might be decolonized for transnational work by doing without traditional Western feminist values and focusing instead on opposing sexist oppression. This paper presents a challenge to the idea that feminism consists in opposing sexist oppression, claiming that it instead consists in opposing gender oppression, where that includes combating cissexism and heterosexism. More specifically, it argues that critiquing cissexist criteria within gender categories as well as critiquing harms that follow from (...) having a queer sexual identity are decidedly feminist tasks. Furthermore, cases of these harms where group identities cannot arise in the social ontology due to a lack of hermeneutical resources challenge the idea that feminism is concerned only with oppression. The second half of the paper extends Khader’s critique of the Western liberal moral vocabulary of feminism by proposing a radical decolonization of the feminist canon as it is usually conceived in the global North. This essay collects four decades of my own reflections, as an anthropologist and feminist, on gender and coloniality across various contexts in Latin America. It also highlights the decolonial methodology and vocabulary that I have had to develop in my various roles as scholar, public intellectual, and expert witness over the years. Briefly, what I present here is a decolonial feminist perspective that argues for the existence of a patriarchal political order in communal societies before colonization. Yet, in my view, (...) precolonial gender has a dual structure that is plural in essence and differs markedly from the binary gender structure of colonial-modern societies, which works in terms of a One and its marginalized others. As I argue, the capturing and transformation of precolonial dual gender structures by the modern gender system exacerbates inequality, increases violence against women, and disempowers them politically. For that reason, I speak of “low-intensity” and “high-intensity” patriarchal systems. (shrink)

In spite of the considerable development of research in the fields of business ethics and family business, a comprehensive review and integration of the area where both disciplines intersect has not been undertaken so far. This paper aims at contributing to the call for more research on family business ethics by answering the following research questions: What is the status of the current research at the intersection of business ethics and family business? Why and how do family firms differ from (...) non-family firms regarding business ethics? And, what are the key directions for further research? To answer these questions, this study combines a systematic approach for the selection of articles, resulting in a sample of 31 articles over 35 years, with a narrative review to analyze the literature. This paper finds that research on family business ethics is scarce but increasing and that family firms are considerably different from non-family firms regarding ethical issues. Particular stakeholders, goals, relationships, and practices are found to be the forces behind the peculiarity of family business ethics. Ultimately, research development on family business ethics is encouraged and future research directions flowing from the key findings and reflections of this review are provided. (shrink)

El siguiente artículo busca ser un aporte teórico y metodológico para quienes se enfrentan a la tarea de realizar análisis del discurso. En ese sentido, este texto está especialmente dirigido a estudiantes que piensan llevar a cabo esta tarea en sus tesis de egreso. Para lograr este desafío teórico y metodológico, a lo largo del artículo se responderán dos preguntas: ¿Por qué analizar el discurso? Y ¿cómo hacer análisis del discurso? Como vemos, la primera pregunta es de naturaleza explicativa y (...) la segunda de carácter metodológica.The following article seeks to be a theoretical and methodological contribution for those who are faced with the task of realizing discourse analysis. In this sense, this text is especially directed to students who intend to perform this task in their thesis. In order to achieve this theoretical and methodological challenge, all along the article, it will be answering two questions: Why doing discourse analysis? and How is discourse analysis performed? The interest in ethical leadership has grown in the past few years, with an emphasis on the mechanisms through which it affects organizational life. However, research on the boundary conditions that limit and/or enhance its effectiveness is still scarce, especially concerning one of the main misconceptions about ethical leadership, its incompatibility with effectiveness . Thus, the present study examines the relationship between ethical leadership and organizational deviance via affective commitment to the organization, as a reflection of the quality of the (...) employee–organization relationship and proposes this relationship is conditional on the supervisor’s personal reputation for performance . Using a sample of 224 employees and their respective supervisors from 18 organizations, we confirmed our hypotheses . Our findings suggest that ethical leadership is positively related to employees’ affective commitment to the organization, particularly when supervisor’s reputation for performance is high, which in turn is associated with decreased organizational deviance. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings conclude the paper. (shrink)

Previous studies making use of indirect processing measures have shown that perceptual grouping can occur outside the focus of attention. However, no previous study has examined the possibility of subliminal processing of perceptual grouping. The present work steps forward in the study of perceptual organization, reporting direct evidence of subliminal processing of Gestalt patterns. In two masked priming experiments, Gestalt patterns grouped by proximity or similarity that induced either a horizontal or vertical global orientation of the stimuli were presented as (...) masked primes and followed by visible targets that could be congruent or incongruent with the orientation of the primes. The results showed a reliable priming effect in the complete absence of prime awareness for both proximity and similarity grouping principles. These findings suggest that a phenomenal report of the Gestalt pattern is not mandatory to observe an effect on the response based on the global properties of Gestalt stimuli. (shrink)

In this paper, I challenge the widespread view that Measurement Independence adequately represents the requirement that EPR experimenters have free will. Measurement Independence is most commonly taken as a necessary condition for free will. A number of implicit assumptions can be identified in this regard, all of which can be challenged on their own grounds. As a result, I conclude that Measurement Independence-type conditions are not to be justified by appealing to the preservation of the EPR experimenters’ free will.

The article aims to study the fragments 2 and 7 of Parmenides through Martin Heidegger’s philosophy. The study focuses on the comprehension of the Being’s investigative paths and on "the concealed sense" of the term éthos in the poem. Finally, the text is going to compare the sense of éthos established in Parmenides with the one testified by Heraclitus. The last one shows itself much more originary, as can be understood from Heidegger’s texts.

La palabra, la amistad y la enfermedad son los tres ámbitos escogidos por el autor para vertebrar estas tres reflexiones éticas que configuraron las «IV Conferencias Aranguren », En primer lugar, se pasa revista a la compleja interacción que se crea entre un hablante y su interlocutor, la cual es analizada desde un punto de vista moral, destacándose aspectos tales como la persuasión, la sinceridad o la llamada mentira piadosa. Quizá sólo alguien que une a su condición de ensayista el (...) oficio de médico podía recordamos lo apuntado al final del trabajo, a saber, que junto a las obligaciones de los médicos para con sus pacientes o la de éstos para con aquéllos, no deben olvidarse los deberes del enfermo para consigo mismo, en tanto que sólo ellos pueden ayudarnos a transcender nuestra enfermedad y a rentabilízarla desde una perspectiva ética. El intrincado problema de la amistad constituye el núcleo y la parte central del artículo, donde se nos habla de la benefidencia como algo enteramente peculiar y sustantivo de las relaciones amistosas. Esta benefidencia representa un plus que, por encima de la benevolencia, la benedicencia o la beneficencia, transforma una relación humana en un vínculo amistoso. Según esta tesis, en el terreno de la amistad no basta con dar algo de lo que se tiene o algo de lo que se hace, sino que también se necesita dar algo de lo que se es; y en ello consiste la confidencia hecha al buen amigo. Dada la intimidad en que a menudo vivían los esclavos y sus dueños, la amenaza servil estaba siempre latente y podía ser letal. Para mantener a los esclavos bajo control y conseguir que hicieran su trabajo, los historiadores creen que se estableció un doble sistema de premios y castigos -la zanahoria y el palo- en el que la esperanza de la manumisión ocupaba un lugar destacado. En este artículo, intentaremos mostrar que la manumisión no contribuyó de modo preferente a obtener (...) la obediencia de los esclavos, pues había otras recompensas más asequibles. Tan importantes como el doble sistema de premios y castigos fueron otros mecanismos que buscaban que el esclavo interiorizase su condición y la aceptase sin protestar. Given the intimacy in which slaves and their owners often lived, the servile threat was always latent and could be lethal. To keep the slaves under control and to get them to do their work, historians believe that a dual system of rewards and punishments -the carrot and the stick- was established in which the hope of manumission occupied a prominent place. In this article, we will try to show that manumission was not the main mechanism to obtain obedience from slaves, since there were other rewards at hand. As important as the double system of rewards and punishments were other mechanisms through which slaves assimilated their condition as natural and accepted it without protest. (shrink)

This article reconstructs Habermas hypothesis that in the sacral complexity the rite precedes the myth and that could explain the permanence of religion as archaic source of solidarity even in the context of the secular world. Mythical narratives, in confrontation with science, shall lose the capacity to explain the world while the religious rites are still able to produce social integration and to collaborate for the construction of identities, at least for those who manifest such sensibility. Confrontation is stablished with (...) Charles Taylor positions, not directly about the hypothesis mentioned above but about the assumptions, that inspires it. Taylor sees the religious experience as generated in the present, an opening to transcendence of the internal modern immanent order, capable to offer therapy to pathologies of a modernity that, even accomplished great advances, has the risk of self-encapsulation. En el doble tono del pensamiento de Aranguren -el del filósofo moral y el de moralista- es el segundo el que lleva el cantus firmus y constituye el estilo del pensador. En este sentido, la obra de J.L. Aranguren continúa creadoramente la gran tradición moralista del pensamiento hispánico. Remedando la expresión orteguiana, podría definirse como «experimentos morales de nueva España», poniéndola en forma moral. A la vez, pervive en ella el aliento unamuniano de una profunda reforma del ethos del catolicismo (...) español. Pero J.L. Aranguren ha realizado su vocación de reformador moral en un ejercicio de transmutación íntima, de autodesprendimiento irónico y transcendimiento utópico del propio si mismo. En otros términos: ha llevado a cabo su tarea de reformador en la tensión entre el desbloqueo crítico de la experiencia moral y su apertura hacia un nuevo horizonte. En un primer momento, el ámbito de experimentación estuvo demarcado por el «buen talante» católico y una metafísica intelectualista zubiriana, que fraguaron en una ética normativa, abierta a las diferentes esferas de la cultura y de profunda inspiración religiosa. Posteriormente, la exploración de la crisis nihilista de Occidente produjo una profunda inflexión en su planteamiento. La crisis determinó un «repliegue ético» decisivo, es decir, una mayor vecindad al planteamiento kantiano, poniendo ahora el acento en la actitud o existencia ética en sí misma, por encima de los contenidos. En sustitución del estilo fundamentalista de la metafísica, el factum moral y el mundo de la vida son ahora los dos focos de constitución de la experiencia moral. Paralelamente, la tarea del reformador moral se centra en el sondeo de la desmoralización utópica de la existencia. La crítica se ejerce fragmentariamente, a piezas sueltas, en torno a los problemas más acuciantes de la experiencia moral: violencia, consumismo, marginación social, tecnificación burocrática de la moral, establecimiento democrático, etc. Acorde con este reforzamiento de la actitud ética se agudiza la tensión entre ética y política hasta límites trágicos, a la par que se replantea sobre nuevas bases la relación entre una moral utópica, de tensión y aspiración, y una religión abierta. We give an account of stable reasoning, a recent and novel approach to problem solving from a formal, logical point of view. We describe the underlying logic of stable reasoning and illustrate how it is used to model different domains and solve practical reasoning problems. We discuss some of the main differences with respect to reasoning in classical logic and we examine an ongoing research programme for the rational reconstruction of human knowledge that may be considered a successor to the (...) logical empiricists’ programme of the mid-twentieth century. Cette étude a pour objectif de démontrer que chez Alain de Lille, la problématique de l’affirmation et de la négation in divinis n’est pas celle de la montée vers Dieu par l’abandon de toute créature. Chez Alain de Lille, la négation constitue l’élément qui permet de penser, au niveau du langage, la différence ontologique qui existe entre Dieu et le monde. Cela n’a été possible que grâce à la convergence de deux traditions : celle de Jean Scot Érigène et celle (...) de Boèce. Parce qu’Alain de Lille approfondit la structure métaphorique du nom divin, il est alors à même de reposer d’une façon originale la problématique de la négation et de l’affirmation dans le discours théologique. Il n’est plus question chez lui de la possibilité ou non de discourir sur la divinité, il est davantage question de règles de sémantique, et donc d’herméneutique, convenant aux discours affirmatif et négatif sur la divinité. O presente artigo, baseado em uma pesquisa teórica, se propõe a abordar a concepção da dialética negativa de Theodor Adorno, partindo de sua crítica aos sistemas filosóficos tradicionais de caráter idealista. A filosofia de Adorno se afigura como crítica às filosofias de caráter idealista, na medida em que entende que tais sistemas filosóficos partem de uma relação de conhecimento entre sujeito e objeto que se trata, em verdade, de uma relação de dominação, na medida em que é ditada por interesses (...) instrumentais de desencantamento da natureza e sua submissão matemática às necessidades inerentes da sociedade burguesa que se formava animada pelo esclarecimento. Essa instrumentalidade contamina a razão, retirando-lhe o fundamental exercício racional e convertendo-se novamente em uma explicação que conserva aspectos da explicação inerentes ao mito, que pretendia superar. Esse é o elemento de dialética do esclarecimento: a razão que pretende superar o mito, mas, que pela sua forma de estruturação, o conserva em seu interior. Como forma de resposta à racionalidade instrumental, Adorno concebe a sua dialética negativa, buscando resguardar a racionalidade da razão pelo exercício da negatividade. A negatividade parte da consciência da necessidade de conservar a materialidade da realidade no interior da razão, desiderato para o qual a formação estética de Adorno foi determinante. Assim, para atingir o objetivo deste artigo, serão abordados aspectos biográficos do filósofo relacionados à formação do seu pensamento a partir de sua experiência pessoal e vinculada com a Teoria Crítica da Sociedade. Com isso, pretende-se evidenciar a origem da sua concepção de crítica da razão pela razão, a partir da concepção de uma dialética negativa. Palavras-chave: Theodor Adorno. Dialética negativa. O mundo da edição electrónica de periódicos encontra-se em permanente evolução, a par dos avanços tecnológicos e da crescente utilização de meios informáticos que facilitem o acesso à informação.A maioria das iniciativas que utilizam a edição electrónica de revistas tem como principal objectivo permitir aos investigadores um acesso fácil e centralizado à informação, alargando desta forma a potencial difusão das publicações consultadas.Partilhando alguns elementos deste princípio funcional, o Seminário Livre de História das Ideias (SLHI) propõe-se editar e estudar revistas históricas, (...) preocupando-se não apenas com a acessibilidade da informação mas também, e sobretudo, com a construção de um aparato analítico que permita uma leitura crítica das fontes. Discutir o seu trabalho e a sua experiência pode ser, pois, um passo importante para superar obstáculos e definir rumos para a edição electrónica de revistas. (shrink)

Cell division is an universal process the aim of which is the equitable distribution of subcellular organelles from single cells to their daughters. The extraordinary accuracy with which the genetic material is partitioned requires a complex machinery involving many gene products. Genetic approaches can be used to identify the relevant components and processes, and mutational analysis of loci essential for cell division has been carried out in several eukaryotes, in particular fungi and mammalian cells in culture. Recently, this type of (...) analysis has been extended to Drosophila, an ideal eukaryote for genetic studies. We will review here the genetic dissection of mitosis in Drosophila melanogaster, discussing recent findings of interest and the methodological problems that have been encountered. (shrink)

En el inacabable debate sobre el positivismo jurídico, hay quien ha propuesto un retorno a los orígenes del positivismo anglosajón, es decir, a Hobbes, Bentham y Austin. Para quienes defienden esto, las tesis positivistas no pretenden ser conceptuales ni descriptivas sino normativas o prescriptivas, es decir que formulan cómo deberían ser los sistemas jurídicos. Tal carácter prescriptivo no se fundamenta en los beneficios que dicho modelo produce a la ciencia jurídica o en que se logre una descripción mejor de la (...) realidad jurídica, sino en razones morales y políticas. De ahí la denominación de ‘positivismo ético’. Se expone la teoría de la interpretación del positivismo ético (prescriptivo o normativo), desde la obra del iusfilósofo australiano Tom Campbell, quien ha defendido con más empeño la vuelta a un positivismo de este género. Das Prinzip der alternativen Möglichkeiten wird im Rahmen von sog. Frankfurt-style-cases in Frage gestellt. Traditionelle Inkompatibilisten haben jedoch zu zeigen versucht, dass auch innerhalb solcher Gegenbeispiele alternative Möglichkeiten existieren – the flicker of freedom – die sich nicht eliminieren lassen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird dafür argumentiert, dass der Standardeinwand, der gegenüber solchen Überlegungen erhoben wird, mindestens in einem Fall, den man die deontische Verteidigung nennen könnte, nicht überzeugend ist. Strittig ist allerdings, ob die betreffenden Alternativen ein völlig unabhängiges Prinzip (...) generieren, oder doch in einem unmittelbaren Zusammenhang mit dem Prinzip der alternativen Möglichkeiten stehen. Entsprechend werden zwei Lesarten der deontischen Flicker-Strategie unterschieden, wobei deutlich gemacht wird, dass eine weite Lesart, bei der das im Hintergrund stehende Prinzip der Vermeidbarkeit von Schuld mit der Behauptung von alternativen Möglichkeiten koinzidiert, die am besten gerechtfertigte Flicker-Strategie ist. Dieses Ergebnis lässt den Schluss zu, dass es keinen zwingenden Grund gibt, das Prinzip der alternativen Möglichkeiten aufgrund von Frankfurt-style-cases aufzugeben. (shrink)
