Theorists in various scientific disciplines offer radically different accounts of the origin of violent behavior in humans, but it is not clear how the study of violence is to be scientifically grounded. This problem is made more complicated because both what sorts of acts constitute violence and what needs to be appealed to in explaining violence differs according to social scientists, biologists, anthropologists and neurophysiologists, and this generates serious problems with respect to even attempting to ascertain the differential bona fides (...) of these various explanatory programs. As a consequence, there is little theoretical reason to suspect that efforts to prevent violence will have any appreciable effect. In this paper we investigate the general issue of whether any of the general theoretical approaches to violent behavior can reasonably be taken to be the best approach to the explanation of seriously violent behavior. Our more specific aim is to examine the controversial explanation of violent behavior offered by Lonnie Athens in order to ascertain whether it can be seriously considered to be the best explanation of violent behavior. A proof of pragmatism is proposed in Peirce's 1903 lecture series on Pragmatism as a Principle and Method of Right Thinking. It is necessary first to define what pragmatism is, a task for which a practitioner of the pragmatic maxim would be fitted, but which, however, must be highly problematic to a potential practitioner who does not yet know its full meaning. In order to clarify its meaning, Peirce uses a method he recommends for such conundrums in his 1891 article, (...) “The Architecture of Theories,” that is, “to make a systematic study of the conceptions out of which a philosophical theory may be built, in order to ascertain what place each conception may fitly occupy in such a theory and to what uses it is adapted”. Peirce's systematic study of the basis of logic and pragmatism in relation to it begins to appear around 1898 and peaks in 1903 when pragmatism's definition and role within the sciences is established in these lectures. The abductive stage of logical investigation benefits from direct contact with objects of thought, especially material objects in aggregates. The ubiquity of collecting activity and collections of non-utilitarian material objects in ancient as well as contemporary settings, with increasingly deliberate attention to material objects as implements of thought, demonstrates these benefits. This essay focuses on the logica utens of collecting and the role of collections in detection and discovery.

: While Charles Sanders Peirce did not have what we might think of in the 21st century as an established academic teaching career, he spent much of his scholarly efforts on constructing articles, textbooks, lessons, lectures and schemes that would promote a fertile framework for genuine inquiry within a "scientific community of scholars." What sort of a model for education does pragmatism, after the manner of Charles Peirce's pragmaticism, offer? How would the infusion of a pragmatic mode of inquiry into (...) education affect the way teaching and learning are understood and practiced? In this paper, I will conceptualize the educational system that is suggested by Charles Peirce's pragmaticisim and evaluate the differences between a pragmaticist educational scheme and several major current non-pragmaticist models.Key-words: Peirce, pragmaticism, scientific community, education, constructivism.Resumo: Embora não tenha tido o que podemos conceber, no século XXI, como uma carreira docente acadêmica estabelecida, Charles Sanders Peirce dedicou muito de seus esforços como estudioso preparando artigos, livros-textos, lições, palestras e esquemas que iriam promover um arcabouço fértil para a investigação genuína em uma "comunidade científica de pesquisadores". Que tipo de modelo para a educação o pragmaticismo de Charles Peirce oferece? Como a infusão de um modo de investigação pragmático na educação afetaria a maneira pela qual o ensino e o aprendizado são compreendidos e praticados? Neste artigo, eu conceitualizarei o sistema educacional sugerido pelo pragmaticismo de Charles Peirce e avaliarei as diferenças entre um esquema educacional pragmaticista e vários dos principais modelos não-pragmaticistas atuais.Palavras-chave: Peirce, pragmaticismo, comunidade científica, educação, construtivismo.
