Picking the right cherries? A comparison of corpus-based and qualitative analyses of news articles about masculinity.Erez Levon & Paul Baker - 2015 - Discourse and Communication 9 (2):221-236.
As a way of comparing qualitative and quantitative approaches to critical discourse analysis, two analysts independently examined similar datasets of newspaper articles in order to address the research question ‘How are different types of men represented in the British press?’. One analyst used a 41.5 million word corpus of articles, while the other focused on a down-sampled set of 51 articles from the same corpus. The two ensuing research reports were then critically compared in order to elicit shared and unique (...)

Crime or culture? Representations of chemsex in the British press and magazines aimed at GBTQ+ men.Frazer Heritage & Paul Baker - 2022 - Critical Discourse Studies 19 (4):435-453.
ABSTRACT Chemsex is a phenomenon in which typically gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and/or related communities of men take psychoactive drugs while having sex, often without a condom. The practice can lead to increased rates of HIV transmission, sexual assault, and in extreme cases murder. GBTQ+ men are already a stigmatised group so those who engage in chemsex face multiple stigmas. This study examines the ways that two types of media report on chemsex while negotiating these stigmas. We take a large (...)

From proband to provider: is there an obligation to inform genetic relatives of actionable risks discovered through direct-to-consumer genetic testing?Jordan A. Parsons & Philip E. Baker - 2022 - Journal of Medical Ethics 48 (3):205-212.
Direct-to-consumer genetic testing is a growing phenomenon, fuelled by the notion that knowledge equals control. One ethical question that arises concerns the proband’s duty to share information indicating genetic risks in their relatives. However, such duties are unenforceable and may result in the realisation of anticipated harm to relatives. We argue for a shift in responsibility from proband to provider, placing a duty on test providers in the event of identified actionable risks to relatives. Starting from Parker and Lucassen’s 'joint (...)

    “I take care of my kids”: Mothering practices of substance-abusing women.Amy Carson & Phyllis L. Baker - 1999 - Gender and Society 13 (3):347-363.
This article examines 17 substance-abusing women's perceptions of their mothering practices in the context of a residential substance-abuse treatment program for women with children and pregnant women. Using in-depth semistructured interviews and observations of treatment groups, the participants' cultural knowledge about mothering is explored. Although the women in this study described how their substance-abusing lifestyle had a negative impact on their children, they also detailed practices that illustrated that they felt capable as parents. The women were silent about how race, (...)

Ecological regulation for healthy and sustainable food systems: responding to the global rise of ultra-processed foods.Tanita Northcott, Mark Lawrence, Christine Parker & Phillip Baker - 2023 - Agriculture and Human Values 40 (3):1333-1358.
Many are calling for transformative food systems changes to promote population and planetary health. Yet there is a lack of research that considers whether current food policy frameworks and regulatory approaches are suited to tackle whole of food systems challenges. One such challenge is responding to the rise of ultra-processed foods (UPF) in human diets, and the related harms to population and planetary health. This paper presents a narrative review and synthesis of academic articles and international reports to critically examine (...)

Biography, historiography, and modes of philosophizing: the tradition of collective biography in early modern Europe.Patrick Baker (ed.) - 2017 - Boston: Brill.
By way of essays and a selection of primary sources in parallel text, Biography, Historiography, and Modes of Philosophizing provides an introduction to a vast, significant, but neglected corpus of early modern literature: collective biography. It focuses especially on the various related strands of political, philosophical, and intellectual and cultural biography as well as on the intersection between biography, historiography, and philosophy. Individual texts from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century are presented as examples of how the ancient collective biographical (...)
