Na tradição analítica, tanto a fundamentação lógica cerno a causação ontológica pressupõem sempre a distinção, mais, a separação entre fundante e fundado, entre causa e efeito. Isso leva a regressus ad intinitum, irracionalidade essa que só pode ser evitada pela postulação de uma arkhé inicial que, estando fora da série, faz o começo da série e assim de fora a determina. Surge assim a predeterminação causal. Uma tal concepção leva ao indeterminismo causal que impossibilita a liberdade. Na tradição dialética, fundante (...) e fundado, causa e efeito são, em última instância, um movimento circular: autofundamentação e autocausação. Isso permite pensar a liberdade como autodeterminação. Se o sistema dialético é pensado sem contingência, a autodeterminação é "livre" apenas por não sofrer coerção externa; e!a, dentro em si, é necessária. Se o sistema é pensado com contingência, como aqui se defende, liberdade pode ser pensada como livre escolha. O dilema entre causalidade e livre arbítrio é assim resolvido, sem que se apele como fez Kant para uma teoria de dois mundos. (shrink)

O texto visa, a partir do último livro de Cirne-Lima, Depois de Hegel , produzir uma crítica à interpretação deste autor brasileiro quanto ao conceito de contradição na filosofia hegeliana. Para isso, tomamos como base de nossa argumentação o próprio texto de Hegel - Wissenschaft der Logik - no original.

Neste artigo analiso criticamente a metalógica proposta por Cime-Lima com seus três princípios fundamentais: Identidade, Diferença e Coerência. Estes são considerados universalíssimos, pois precisam ser aplicados absolutamente tudo, inclusive a si mesmos.Disso surge a antinomia que legitima uma passagem dialética para a Filosofia da Natureza.Mostrarei: que a fundamentação do princípio de Diferença é falaciosa, e que esta metalógica gera artificialmente antinomias por meio de um uso inadequado da noção de auto-aplicação.

A filosofia como sistema, segundo Cime-Lima, só poderá ser justificada se caos e determinismo puderem ser justificados. Trata-se de uma unificação entre a "substância" de Spinoza e o "eu livre" de Kant. Para que isso possa ser justificado busca-se na Física um paradigma de discussão. Podemos encontrar na Física uma teoria que corrobore a ideia de uma justificação via sistema, como pretende CirneLima, isto é, onde haja uma unificação entre caos e determinismo?

Este trabalho empreende a tarefa de uma recuperação crítica e comparativa dos dois principais projetos brasileiros de reatualização do pensamento dialético: o sistema do dever-ser de Carlos Cirne-Lima e a dialética do Uno e do Múltiplo de Eduardo Luft. Inicialmente, trata-se de iluminar os pressupostos lógico-ontológicos atuantes em cada um destes projetos, fazendo ver suas principais divergências quanto à radicalidade de um distanciamento do sistema hegeliano: o que um vê como possibilidade de correção, o outro reconhece como a (...) necessidade de uma ruptura. Esta reconstrução crítica nos permitirá extrair as devidas consequências para o campo da ética: a ética de coerência dialética é uma ética objetiva e geral que encontra seu fundamento na pressuposição de identidade entre ser e pensar, e que assim permite a dissolução do problema da falácia naturalista quanto à fundamentação teórica do dever-ser. A partir daí, as diferentes interpretações do Princípio da Coerência devem nos guiar à consciência da emergência de um conceito original de liberdade humana, ao passo da qual devemos, por fim, explorar as potencialidades desse conceito para uma renovada abordagem crítica tanto em relação ao âmbito da sociabilidade humana, como ao âmbito do próprio pensamento. Os artigos contidos neste número de Veritas, como é de praxe, na edição que corresponde ao mês de dezembro de cada ano, versam sobre temas ligados direta e indiretamente à dialética. Os projetos integrados de Dialética: conhecimento e linguagem, ética e política, sob a coordenação do professor Dr. Carlos Roberto V. Cirne Lima, com a participação dos professores Dr. Manfredo Araújo de Oliveira, Dr. Tadeu Weber, Dr. Jayme Paviani, Me. Angelo Cenci, Doutorando Eduardo Luft, Doutorando Sérgio Augusto Sardi, (...) Doutorando Custódio Luís S. de Almeida e outros professores que estão se integrando ao programa de pesquisa, começam a mostrar os primeiros resultados de uma política de coordenação e sistematização da produção científica. Estes projetos sintonizados com as linhas de pesquisa do Curso de Pós-Graduação em Filosofia, Mestrado e Doutorado, da PUCRS, contribuem para a investigação de problemas filosóficos reatualizados e aprofundados sob o enfoque dialético. Os projetos de pesquisa em andamento ao responderem às perguntas o que é dialética e o que é filosofia investigam questões fundamentais da filosofia e da cultura contemporâneas remetendo-as aos métodos filosóficos desde as suas origens gregas. Os números especiais da revista Veritas têm, portanto, a função de publicar resultados parciais destas pesquisas realizadas pelos professores do núcleo Dialética: conhecimento e linguagem, ética e política e de seus colaboradores e interlocutores. Ontology played a very large role in Quine’s philosophy and was one of his major preoccupations from the early 30’s to the end of his life. His work on ontology provided a basic framework for most of the discussions of ontology in analytic philosophy in the second half of the Twentieth Century. There are three main themes that Quine developed in his work. The first is ontological commitment: What are the existential commitments of a theory? The second is ontological reduction: (...) How can an ontology be reduced to another? And what is the most economical ontology that can be obtained for certain given purposes? The third is criteria of identity: When are entities of some kind the same or different? In this paper I discuss Quine’s development of these three themes and some of the problems that were aised in connection with his work. (shrink)

This study described and analysed the circumstances surrounding a fatal car accident involving personnel of a multinational corporation in a developing country. For some companies, road accidents are the leading cause of work-related fatalities in developing countries. This reality highlights the ethical dilemmas encountered in a global workplace. Questions as to how a company addresses safety concerns outside the standard work environment, the ethics of operating in a risky environment and the requirements for international consistency in compensation standards for loss (...) of life were addressed. The authors argued that multinational companies should localize health and safety practices to address the important asymmetries between different regions of the world regarding social, cultural and infrastructural issues. Furthermore, the authors analysed the leadership role that should be played by multinational companies to help and support national governments to reduce traffic fatalities in developing countries. From this perspective, the article represents a contribution for the body of knowledge dealing with the business–society relations. The authors used an action research approach to address these issues, both in response to the particular incident and to contribute to the body of research in this field. (shrink)

Seismic interpretation is dependent on the quality and resolution of seismic data. Unfortunately, seismic amplitude data are often insufficient for detailed sequence stratigraphy interpretation. We reviewed a method to derive high-resolution seismic attributes based upon complex continuous wavelet transform pseudodeconvolution and phase-residue techniques. The PD method is based upon an assumption of a blocky earth model that allowed us to increase the frequency content of seismic data that, for our data, better matched the well log control. The phase-residue technique allowed (...) us to extract information not only from thin layers but also from interference patterns such as unconformities from the seismic amplitude data. Using data from a West Texas carbonate environment, we found out how PD can be used not only to improve the seismic well ties but also to provide sharper sequence terminations. Using data from an Anadarko Basin clastic environment, we discovered how phase residues delineate incised valleys seen on the well logs that are difficult to see on vertical slices through the original seismic amplitude. The standard view of logical form is that logical forms are synthetic structures which are the forms of sentences and of other linguistic entities. This is often associated with a more general linguistic view of logic which is articulated in different ways by various authors. This paper contains a critical discussion of such linguistic approaches to logical form, with special emphasis on Quine’s formulation of a logical grammar in Philosophy of Logic. Goodman’s paper “The Problem of Counterfactual Conditionals” played a central role in the debate concerning the proper analysis of counterfactual conditionals. In what follows I examine Goodman’s paper in detail and discuss objections and suggestions by Parry in his “Reexamination of the Problem of Counterfactual Conditionals”. I restrict my discussion to what Goodman termed “the problem of relevant conditions”, which is the main subject of Parry’s criticism, and which I also consider to be the central issue for Goodman’s approach.

A seguir examinarei o artigo de Goodman em detalhe e discutirei algumas objeções e sugestões de Parry em seu artigo “A Reexamination of the Problem of Counterfactual Conditionals”. The applied discipline of agroecological design provides a useful case study for examining broader philosophical questions about the existence and importance of ecological generalizations or “laws.” Recent developments in the availability and use of formal meta-analyses have led to the discovery of many resilient generalizations in ecology. However, these “laws” face numerous challenges when it comes to their practical application. Concerns about their reliability and scope might stem from unclear logical and epistemic connections to more foundational or “unifying” generalizations, 2019) (...) which, in ecology, tend to be derived from first principles and in association with highly abstract models. This raises questions about the nature of those foundational generalizations themselves. In particular, how resilient are they compared to the generalizations uncovered by empirically driven methods? Here we propose a procedure for evaluating the resilience of generalizations across five ecologically relevant dimensions. This procedure was applied to seven well known foundational generalizations in ecology. Surprisingly, it turned out to be impossible to estimate the resilience of these foundational generalizations based on the available literature. This points to the need for a more centralized repository of information about ecological generalizations, created with the explicit aim of evaluating such important dimensions as causal mechanism and predictive power. Previous research has shown that student plagiarism is the product of interplay between individual and situational factors. The present study examined the relationship between these two sets of factors with a particular focus on variables linked to students’ academic context namely, their perception of peer behaviors, their experience of adversities in academic life, and their year of enrollment. So far, these situational features have received scant attention in studies of plagiarism conducted in most of Europe. A survey was carried out (...) in a European higher education institution, involving a sample of 427 undergraduates. The data was analyzed via both conventional univariate and bivariate statistical analysis, and multivariate, multilevel modeling. The results suggest that awareness of peer plagiarizing and the experience of hardships in academic life, rather than level of academic achievement or year of study, are significantly related to plagiarizing, whereas heightened perception of the seriousness of plagiarism is associated with a lower likelihood of this type of behavior. The study also shows that students who plagiarize are more likely to be involved in other types of academic misconduct. (shrink)

O artigo defende uma proposta filosófica neopirrônica, que se entende como inteiramente adequada às necessidades filosóficas do homem contemporâneo. O texto é diretamente inspirado na obra de Sexto Empírico e procura investigar as ricas potencialidades da noção pirroniana de fenômeno, uma vez restabelecido o seu sentido originário na obra de Sexto.

Pode a história das instituições de ensino superior nos ajudar a compreender as causas de controvérsias filosóficas e os processos de mudança intelectual pelo qual velhos estilos intelectuais são substituídos por novos? Neste artigo, associo a emergência da filosofia pós-analítica nos Estados Unidos a partir da década de 1970 à reforma e expansão do sistema de ensino superior daquele país na segunda metade do século XX, que afetou a filosofia enquanto disciplina acadêmica e profissão. Tomando como ponto de partida as (...) reflexões de Richard Rorty a respeito do estado da disciplina no início dos anos 1980, mostro como seu diagnóstico de crise disciplinar, elaborado na forma de uma crítica filosófica aos pressupostos teóricos e metodológicos da filosofia analítica, é resultado de um processo mais longo e amplo de transformação das bases institucionais da vida filosófica profissional nos Estados Unidos. Artificial intelligence methods have a very wide range of applications. From speech recognition to self-driving cars, the development of modern deep-learning architectures is helping researchers to achieve new levels of accuracy in different fields. Although deep convolutional neural networks have reached or surpassed human-level performance in image recognition tasks, little has been done to transport this new image classification technology to geoscientific problems. We have developed what we believe to be the first use of CNNs to identify lithofacies in cores. (...) We use highly accurate models and transfer learning to classify images of cored carbonate rocks. We found that different modern CNN architectures can achieve high levels of lithologic image classification accuracy and can aid in the core description task. This core image classification technique has the potential to greatly standardize and accelerate the description process. We also provide the community with a new set of labeled data that can be used for further geologic/data science studies. (shrink)

Dans cet essai, je tente de répondre à quelques-unes des objections habituellement adressées au cosmopolitisme, en prenant en considération la perspective de ceux que cette doctrine risque d’affecter, à savoir, les immigrants. J’argue que certaines de ces objections se fondent sur des conceptions simplifiées à l’excès et empiriquement inexactes de ce que sont la communauté et l’identité culturelle. J’examine aussi en détail la controverse entourant les possibles implications autoritaristes — ou impérialistes — des propositions visant à faire d’un système moral-légal (...) un modèle pour le monde. L’objectif général de cet article est d’explorer les conditions permettant l’établissement d’une règle de justice cosmopolitique, dans un contexte mondial marqué par des différences culturelles et une extrême inégalité dans l’accès aux ressources et au pouvoir décisionnel. Although the chinampa agriculture in Mexico City is considered an historical sustainable farming system,there have been few studies on its current status. This paper assesses the relationship between agroecological factors and socioeconomic strategies by analyzing urban forces, regional employment, and environmental concerns. Despite ecological deterioration caused by the urban expansion of Mexico City, the economic viability of this agricultural system is still based on the efficient use of farming technologies and resources management strategies that tend to maintain levels of productivity (...) in horticulture and floriculture. The chinampa agriculture generates high income and employment for families and other local residents. This agroecosystem depends on the relationship between the economic priorities and agricultural criteria of farmers. We suggest that urban development, economic growth, and resource management in the chinampa region of Mexico City coincide with ecosystem processes, biological human needs, agronomic productivity, economic viability, and sociocultural values. By evaluating these factors, we provide some useful insights on the importance of this traditional agriculture within a sustainable development context. (shrink)
