The paper deals with neo-Kantianism and the value theory in Hungarian philosophy on the threshold of the 20th century. It shows how neo-Kantianism contributed to the Hungarian philosophy’s being professionalized as well as the transformations of neo-Kantianism in the works of its leading representatives. It also offers a detailed analysis of the value theory of K Böhm, who created the first original Hungarian philosophical system.

The paper deals with the school philosophy in the former Upper Hungary. Its star_ting point is the assumption, that the question of the receptive/creative character of the so called national philosophy can be resolved only by showing the nature of the institution, where the philosophy under consideration was practised. In Upper Hungary philosophy was practised in high schools, at colleges and universities of various kinds. The author gives a definition of the so called school philosophy and examines its main characteristics, (...) such as its isolation, eclecticism, limitation by the school curricula etc. He shows the differences between the philosophy taught in gymnasiums and lyceums on one hand and at the universities and royal academies on the other hand. Attention is paid also to the specific role played by logic and psychology in the frame of school philosophy. (shrink)

The philosophical production in our region in the 19th century developed in two lines: the school philosophy and the works, which in contemporary terminology could be called applied philosophy. The first attempts at the original in the frame of so called “national philosophy” remained without a considerable achievment. This was also the case of the physician and philosopher Michael Petöcz , whose all essays were written in German. However, in his works he developed a relatively original system, differing from the (...) philosophical thought of that time. The paper presents the basic thoughts of this system, paying attention also to another local philosophers, who already before Petocz were heading for similar conclusions. The paper describes that period of the Hungarian philosophy, in which it became professionalized, namely the Kant argument, which was the first step the Hungarian philosophy took towards its being public. The question has to be answered whether Kant’s thought could become a part of it. Due to political developments as well as the pressure of the church the turn of the century witnessed the shift from epistemology to the issues of moral philosophy and theology. Thus the conditions for the (...) reception of Kantianism and post-Kantian philosophy in the 19th century have been created. The fundaments for the development of axiology were laid as well.
