In the light of the possibilities and the limitations of theological realism as exemplified by the contribution of Ronald Preston, and given an increasingly global context and pluralist agenda, an argument is developed that proceeds to clarify and promote the contribution of Christian ethics to public debate and policy. It is proposed that Christian ethics has a particular contribution to make to contemporary debate, in clarifying the procedure and content of moral decision-making. The argument shows how different conceptions of the (...) relationship between ethics and a religious, in this case specifically Christian, system of belief influence both the assessment of human moral possibilities and the scope for engagement beyond the confines of one's own social context and tradition. More importantly, it is then argued that such engagement is to be conducted in dialogue and solidarity with those who are excluded from participation in the interpretation of justice and the distribution of power. The sichos compiled in this volume were given, over the years, by Rav Nebenzahl, Rav of the Old City of Jerusalem, between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.
We show that under the assumption of the existence of the canonical inner model with one Woodin cardinal $M_1$, there is a model of $\mathsf {ZFC}$ in which $\mbox {NS}_{\omega _{1}}$ is $\aleph _2$ -saturated and ${\Delta }_{1}$ -definable with $\omega _1$ as a parameter which answers a question of S. D. Friedman and L. Wu. We also show that starting from an arbitrary universe with a Woodin cardinal, there is a model with $\mbox {NS}_{\omega _{1}}$ saturated and ${\Delta }_{1}$ (...) -definable with a ladder system $\vec {C}$ and a full Suslin tree T as parameters. Both results rely on a new coding technique whose presentation is the main goal of this article. (shrink)
In 1963 the American journalist Betty Friedan published her book The Feminine Mystique, in which she identified, on the basis of an analysis of women's magazines and surveys of women, a paradox in the self- awareness of American women: in striving to achieve the ideal of femininity, they devote themselves zealously to serving the family, and at the same time they feel they are "different" human beings from men, who have access to the world at large. Friedan compared the situation (...) of the housewife with the situation of a prisoner in a concentration camp. In both, a person is deprived of self-identity, of self-respect, and of manifesting one's individuality and is isolated from the large world of ideas and events. Friedan's general conclusion was that the ideal of "femininity" that guides women is not a natural bent of their natures but an inhumane stereotype that is imposed by advertising, business, and government because it is useful to society. The concept of the Islamic state, which is one of the main debates of Islamism, was an important source of motivation for Islamist movements, especially during the cold war. The debates in this context mostly focus on how to establish a relationship between the secular character of the modern state and Islam. In this study, Wael B. Hallaq's book titled The Impossible State: Islam, Politics, and Modernity's Moral Predicament will be reviewed. The book keeps this discussion current and offers a (...) different perspective. Hallaq's main thesis reveals why an Islamic state is not possible within the modern paradigm. Hallaq bases his thesis on the paradigm difference between modern law and Islamic law. (shrink)
In the fourteenth century, Duns Scotus suggested that the proper analysis of modality required not just moments of time but also “moments of nature”. In making this suggestion, he broke with an influential view first presented by Diodorus in the early Hellenistic period, and might even be said to have been the inventor of “possible worlds”. In this essay we take Scotus’ suggestion seriously devising first a double-index logic and then introducing the temporal order. Finally, using the temporal order, we (...) define a modal order. This allows us to present modal logic without the usual interpretive questions arising concerning the relation called variously ‘accessibility’, ‘alternativeness’, and, ‘relative possibility.’ The system in which this analysis is done is one of those which have come to be called a hybrid logic.
