In this paper, we examine the practice and promises of digital phenotyping. We build on work on the ‘data self’ to focus on a medical domain in which the value and nature of knowledge and relations with data have been played out with particular persistence, that of Alzheimer's disease research. Drawing on research with researchers and developers, we consider the intersection of hopes and concerns related to both digital tools and Alzheimer's disease using the metaphor of the ‘data shadow’. We (...) suggest that as a tool for engaging with the nature of the data self, the shadow is usefully able to capture both the dynamic and distorted nature of data representations, and the unease and concern associated with encounters between individuals or groups and data about them. We then consider what the data shadow ‘is’ in relation to ageing data subjects, and the nature of the representation of the individual's cognitive state and dementia risk that is produced by digital tools. Second, we consider what the data shadow ‘does’, through researchers and practitioners’ discussions of digital phenotyping practices in the dementia field as alternately empowering, enabling and threatening. “Readiness cohorts” are an innovation in clinical trial design to tackle the scarcity of time and people in drug studies. This has emerged in response to the challenges of recruiting the “right” research participants at the “right time” in the context of precision medicine. In this paper, we consider how the achievement of “readiness” aligns temporalities, biologies, and market processes of pharmaceutical innovation: how the promise of “willing bodies” in research emerges in relation to intertwined economic and biological time imperatives. Drawing on long-term engagement with the field of Alzheimer’s disease prevention and interviews with researchers from academia and the pharmaceutical industry, we describe the discursive construction and practical arrangement of readiness. This paper contributes to understandings of temporal specificity, or “timing,” within prevention research and casts critical light on the way this specificity—the threshold for “trial readiness”—relates to an opaque and highly speculative drug development pipeline. Extending the study of biomedical potential, as that which holds promise but may not yet exist, we consider how absences operate in adaptive trials. By highlighting these absences, we outline an opportunity for socio-ethical research to intervene in the speculative gaps of drug development. (shrink)

Seria um abuso sexual o príncipe roubar um beijo da Bela Adormecida? Quem brinca de polícia e ladrão pode virar bandido? Games violentos criam assassinos? Mas quem nunca matou uma formiga? O filósofo Luiz Felipe Pondé se une aqui a Ilan Brenman, psicólogo e premiado autor de livros infantis, para fazer um panorama do politicamente correto e discutir suas influências na formação das crianças e, consequentemente, dos adultos que elas se (...) tornarão. Os autores mostram que essa verdadeira patrulha do pensamento tem nos feito perder a capacidade de interpretar a vida, com seus símbolos e suas ironias. Com isso, vemos um número cada vez maior de pessoas com dificuldades em lidar com as emoções que sentem, deprimidas e inseguras. A obra provoca a refletir: talvez o lobo mau não viva apenas nos contos de fadas, mas esteja a nos espreitar na escola, na família, na política, na sociedade, enfim. RESUMO Este artigo tem como objetivo realizar um ensaio-análise do longa-metragem Gabbeh, do diretor iraniano Mohsen Makhmalbaf, promovendo reflexões que possam, em alguma medida, contribuir para o aprofundamento de questões que envolvem o campo da arte e da vida. As bases teórico-epistemológicas que sustentam esta análise são os estudos bakhtinianos em diálogo com a perspectiva vigotskiana. A análise parte de algumas cenas do filme e busca estabelecer uma relação entre alguns conceitos bakhtinianos - como dialogismo, cronotopo, polifonia, exotopia - e (...) a arte cinematográfica em questão. ABSTRACT This article aims to conduct an analysis of the feature film Gabbeh, by Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf, promoting reflections that may, to some extent, contribute to the deepening of questions that involve the field of art and life. The theoretical-epistemological bases that support this analysis are the Bakhtinian studies in dialogue with the Vygotskian perspective. The analysis starts from some scenes of the film and seeks to establish a relationship between some Bakhtinian concepts, such as dialogism, chronotope, polyphony, outsideness, and the cinematographic art in question. Auch Homosexuelle müssen die ödipale Situation meistern, um zu einer gesunden homosexuellen Identität zu finden. Der Ödipuskomplex ist auch hier Dreh- und Angelpunkt in der Entwicklung, verläuft jedoch bei homosexuellen Menschen anders als bei heterosexuellen. Man könnte ihn in Anlehnung an Erick Brenman als »das Wiederfinden des verlorenen (ödipalen) Objekts« bezeichnen. Die bisherige einseitige Favorisierung und Beschreibung des positiven Ödipuskomplexes mit heterosexuellem Ausgang führte zu einer weitgehenden Pathologisierung von schwulen Männern und lesbischen Frauen. Berücksichtigt man jedoch, dass der später (...) schwule Mann – von dem diese Arbeit handelt – mit ganz anderen inneren und äußeren Voraussetzungen in die ödipale Phase eintritt, muss die These des kranken Homosexuellen aufgegeben werden. Der Autor versucht, die gesunde homosexuelle Entwicklung und die zahlreichen Fallstricke, die dieser entgegenstehen, anhand der Übertragung und Gegenübertragung im intersubjektiven Feld der Behandlung eines (Spät-)Adoleszenten darzustellen.
