Stay Mindful and Carry on: Mindfulness Neutralizes COVID-19 Stressors on Work Engagement via Sleep Duration.Michelle Xue Zheng, Theodore Charles Masters-Waage, Jingxian Yao, Yizhen Lu, Noriko Tan & Jayanth Narayanan - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
We examine whether mindfulness can neutralize the negative impact of COVID-19 stressors on employees’ sleep duration and work engagement. In Study 1, we conducted a field experiment in Wuhan, China during the lockdown between February 20, 2020, and March 2, 2020, in which we induced state mindfulness by randomly assigning participants to either a daily mindfulness practice or a daily mind-wandering practice. Results showed that the sleep duration of participants in the mindfulness condition, compared with the control condition, was less (...)

A Bayesian model of the jumping-to-conclusions bias and its relationship to psychopathology.Nicole Tan, Yiyun Shou, Junwen Chen & Bruce K. Christensen - forthcoming - Cognition and Emotion.
The mechanisms by which delusion and anxiety affect the tendency to make hasty decisions (Jumping-to-Conclusions bias) remain unclear. This paper proposes a Bayesian computational model that explores the assignment of evidence weights as a potential explanation of the Jumping-to-Conclusions bias using the Beads Task. We also investigate the Beads Task as a repeated measure by varying the key aspects of the paradigm. The Bayesian model estimations from two online studies showed that higher delusional ideation promoted reduced belief updating but the (...)

Do Androids Dread an Electric Sting?Izak Tait & Neşet Tan - 2023 - Qeios 1:1-18.
Conscious sentient AI seems to be all but a certainty in our future, whether in fifty years’ time or only five years. When that time comes, we will be faced with entities with the potential to experience more pain and suffering than any other living entity on Earth. In this paper, we look at this potential for suffering and the reasons why we would need to create a framework for protecting artificial entities. We look to current animal welfare laws and (...)

    Agency, duties and the "Ashley treatment".N. Tan & I. Brassington - 2009 - Journal of Medical Ethics 35 (11):658-661.
In 2006, a paper in the journal Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine described a novel case of growth attenuation therapy and other treatments carried out on Ashley, a severely cognitively, neurologically and physically disabled 6-year-old girl. Some of the moral arguments that have sprung up in respect of the so-called “Ashley treatment” are considered, and it is suggested that they all miss something—that the proper treatment of Ashley may have as much to do with doctors’ duties to themselves as (...)

Age-Related Performance in Using a Fully Immersive and Automated Virtual Reality System to Assess Cognitive Function.Ngiap Chuan Tan, Jie En Lim, John Carson Allen, Wei Teen Wong, Joanne Hui Min Quah, Paulpandi Muthulakshmi, Tuan Ann Teh, Soon Huat Lim & Rahul Malhotra - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
IntroductionCognition generally declines gradually over time due to progressive degeneration of the brain, leading to dementia and eventual loss of independent functions. The rate of regression varies among the six cognitive domains. Current modality of cognitive assessment using neuropsychological paper-and-pencil screening tools for cognitive impairment such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment has limitations and is influenced by age. Virtual reality is considered as a potential alternative tool to assess cognition. A novel, fully immersive automated VR system has been developed to (...)
