Ethical challenges in global research on health system responses to violence against women: a qualitative study of policy and professional perspectives.Natalia V. Lewis, Beatriz Kalichman, Yuri Nishijima Azeredo, Loraine J. Bacchus & Ana Flavia D’Oliveira - 2024 - BMC Medical Ethics 25 (1):1-16.
Background Studying global health problems requires international multidisciplinary teams. Such multidisciplinarity and multiculturalism create challenges in adhering to a set of ethical principles across different country contexts. Our group on health system responses to violence against women (VAW) included two universities in a European high-income country (HIC) and four universities in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study aimed to investigate professional and policy perspectives on the types, causes of, and solutions to ethical challenges specific to the ethics approval stage of (...)

The Climbing Body, Nature and the Experience of Modernity.Neil Lewis - 2000 - Body and Society 6 (3-4):58-80.
This article lays the ground for a sensuous appreciation of both the human body and the physical world. Drawing on the biographical account of the climber's embodied reflection of rock-climbing, the `climbing body' highlights our overwhelming tactile and kinaesthetic engagement with the phenomenal world. I Begin by emphasizing the need to consider the organic nature of human being, that we should understand how the awareness of death and our consequent sense of mutability provide a significant moment to remember the body. The ‘Good Kiwi’ and the ‘Good Environmental Citizen’?: Dairy, national identity and complex consumption-related values in Aotearoa New Zealand.E. L. Sharp, A. Rayne & N. Lewis - forthcoming - Agriculture and Human Values:1-13.
Alongside concerns for animal welfare, concerns for land, water, and climate are undermining established food identities in many parts of the world. In Aotearoa New Zealand, agrifood relations are bound tightly into national identities and the materialities of export dependence on dairying and agriculture more widely. Dairy/ing identities have been central to national development projects and the politics that underpin them for much of New Zealand’s history. They are central to an intransigent agrifood political ontology. For the last decade, however, (...)

Listeners, not Leeches: What Virginia Tech Survivors Needed from Journalists.Kim Walsh-Childers, Norman P. Lewis & Jeffrey Neely - 2011 - Journal of Mass Media Ethics 26 (3):191 - 205.
Journalists covering the 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech aggravated the trauma felt by victims' families and survivors, raising ethical questions about the role of media at major news events in an Internet-enabled era of continuous coverage. Some journalists breached professional norms by knocking on doors at 6 a.m., claiming a hidden camera was a breast pump and bullying reluctant interviewees. Even conscientious journalists, however, exacerbated the ordeal through their overabundance. By forcing survivors to endure repetitious interviews and making mourners feel (...)

Corporeity, corpus-substantia, and corpus-quantum in Grosseteste’s Commentaries on the Physics and Posterior Analytics.Neil Lewis - 2023 - Revista Española de Filosofía Medieval 30 (1).
In medieval writers we find a distinction between body as a substance – corpus-substantia – and body as a quantity – corpus-quantitas (or quantum). One of the earliest uses of this distinction is in works written by Robert Grosseteste in the 1220s. In this paper I explore his use and understanding of this distinction. I argue that he understands corpus-substantia as such as a dimensionless composite of a first corporeal form, corporeity, and prime matter. Corporeity itself is an active power (...)

Few figures of the Middle Ages command the attention of so many modern disciplines as Robert Grosseteste (c. 1170-1253). Theology, Philosophy, History, and Science are all areas which his life and thought continue to have significance and to inspire re-interpretation. Accompanied by a series of original commentaries, this new edition of Grosseteste's work, with English translation, draws together the perspectives of modern scientists and medieval specialists. Volume I of a six volume series, Knowing and Speaking presents two of the earliest (...)

The unbearable limitations of solo science: Team science as a path for more rigorous and relevant research.Alison Ledgerwood, Cynthia Pickett, Danielle Navarro, Jessica D. Remedios & Neil A. Lewis - 2022 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 45.
Both early social psychologists and the modern, interdisciplinary scientific community have advocated for diverse team science. We echo this call and describe three common pitfalls of solo science illustrated by the target article. We discuss how a collaborative and inclusive approach to science can both help researchers avoid these pitfalls and pave the way for more rigorous and relevant research.

Balancing the Dictates of Law and Ethical Practice: Empowerment of Female Survivors of Domestic Violence in the Presence of Overlapping Child Abuse.Nancy K. Lewis - 2003 - Ethics and Behavior 13 (4):353-366.
Legal and ethical issues arise for clinicians working with female clients who are survivors of domestic violence and who have children. Statistics indicate that children of 30%-80% of such women are also abused. Disclosure by an abused woman of concurrent child abuse creates an ethical dilemma for the clinician involving adherence to mandatory reporting laws and the ethical duty to protect vs. ethical issues of confidentiality and respect for client autonomy. Potential resolution of this dilemma incorporates core tenets of feminist (...)

This dissertation studies Grosseteste's attempt in his De libero arbitrio to develop a theory of non-temporal modality which severs possibility and changeability. It consists in close philosophical analysis of Grosseteste's views, based on new editions and translations of De libero arbitrio, De scientia Dei, and De veritate propositionis contained in the Appendices. ;After studying the theories of modality proposed by Boethius, Abelard, and twelfth century logic texts, together with the logico-linguistic framework thirteenth century writers drew from them, I examine the (...)

The Instant of Change in Medieval Philosophy and Beyond ed. by Frédéric Goubier and Magali Roques.Neil Lewis - 2019 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 57 (4):753-754.
This anthology concerns limit-decision problems, chiefly as treated in the fourteenth-century Latin West. A central problem taken up concerns the instant of change: in a change from ø to not-ø such that before instant t there is ø and after t not-ø, at t is there ø, or not-ø, or neither, or both? For medieval thinkers, the answer often depended on what kind of item was at issue. They standardly distinguished permanent items, the whole of which exists simultaneously, from successive (...)

The topic of this essay is what I name the idea that God the Creator and creatures comprise an exhaustive and mutually exclusive classification of the contents of reality. I am concerned with one of the most penetrating discussions of this issue to be found in the early thirteenth century, Robert Grosseteste’s treatment of challenges to Christian dualism.
