This chapter considers the evolution of the way Smith presented his analysis of value and prices from the Lectures on Jurisprudence to The Wealth of Nations and its importance to understand the structure that that analysis assumes in The Wealth of Nations, where it pivots on the concepts of real price, real measure of exchangeable value, natural price, market price, wages, rate of profits, and rents. Special attention is devoted to the relationship between the concepts of quantity of labour employed (...) in the production of a commodity and quantity of labour that the same commodity may command when exchanged in the market as well as to the possibility that this distinction is developed by Smith into an analysis which may appear either to put forward a labour theory of value or to deny its validity. BackgroundResponsive neurostimulation has been utilized as a treatment for intractable epilepsy. The RNS System delivers stimulation in response to detected abnormal activity, via leads covering the seizure foci, in response to detections of predefined epileptiform activity with the goal of decreasing seizure frequency and severity. While thalamic leads are often implanted in combination with cortical strip leads, implantation and stimulation with bilateral thalamic leads alone is less common, and the ability to detect electrographic seizures using RNS System thalamic leads is (...) uncertain.ObjectiveThe present study retrospectively evaluated fourteen patients with RNS System depth leads implanted in the thalamus, with or without concomitant implantation of cortical strip leads, to determine the ability to detect electrographic seizures in the thalamus. Detailed patient presentations and lead trajectories were reviewed alongside electroencephalographic analyses.ResultsAnterior nucleus thalamic leads, whether bilateral or unilateral and combined with a cortical strip lead, successfully detected and terminated epileptiform activity, as demonstrated by Cases 2 and 3. Similarly, bilateral centromedian thalamic leads or a combination of one centromedian thalamic alongside a cortical strip lead also demonstrated the ability to detect electrographic seizures as seen in Cases 6 and 9. Bilateral pulvinar leads likewise produced reliable seizure detection in Patient 14. Detections of electrographic seizures in thalamic nuclei did not appear to be affected by whether the patient was pediatric or adult at the time of RNS System implantation. Sole thalamic leads paralleled the combination of thalamic and cortical strip leads in terms of preventing the propagation of electrographic seizures.ConclusionThalamic nuclei present a promising target for detection and stimulation via the RNS System for seizures with multifocal or generalized onsets. These areas provide a modifiable, reversible therapeutic option for patients who are not candidates for surgical resection or ablation. (shrink)
This book presents selected academic papers addressing five key research areas – archaeology, history, language, culture and arts – related to the Malay Civilisation. It outlines new findings, interpretations, policies, methodologies and theories that were presented at the International Seminar on Archaeology, History, and Language in the Malay Civilisation in 2016. Further, it provides new perspectives and serves as a vital point of reference for all researchers, students, policymakers and legislators who have an interest in the Malay Civilisation.
The Thrace Basin that is located in northwestern Turkey contains sandstone and carbonate reservoirs of Eocene and Oligocene age. Production and exploration activities are still underway. Mapping undrained sweet spots from seismic data is currently a challenge, so time lapse seismic is used to reduce the risk for new production and development drilling. We have evaluated the normalization and amplitude variation with offset analysis of 3D-4D land seismic data in a gas producing field from which baseline and monitor surveys were (...) acquired in 2002 and 2011, respectively. Through AVO analysis, intercept and gradient analysis was conducted, and fluid factor attribute maps were generated for the assessment of the remaining potential areas. Synthetic gathers were created for simulation of the AVO response, drained and undrained stages and compared with the corresponding 4D seismic data. The drainage of gas from the reservoir interval is evident from the difference maps between 2002 and 2011 seismic data. Both data sets were processed using an amplitude friendly processing sequence. This parallel processing was followed a mild data conditioning and crossequalization for reliable 4D interpretation. The 4D seismic data, especially land data, has low repeatability and requires conditioning to reduce the 4D noise. The 4D noise can be described as nonrepeatable noise, and any difference outside the reservoir zone is not related to production. A so-called crossequalization was applied to the base and the monitor data to bring out similarities so that they cancel out when differences of seismic data and its attributes indicated only the production results over the reservoir zones. As the available 4D data crossequalization software was implemented for stack data only, we created angle band stacks and crossequalized each angle band stack from the base and the monitor data cubes. Five angle band stacks from the base and the monitor prestack data cubes 0°–55° were crossequalized individually. The crossequalized angle band stacks were used in AVO analysis and AVO inversion to generate pore fill identifiers such as FF to map possible undrained zones after 10 years of production. (shrink)
I explore physics implications of the External Reality Hypothesis (ERH) that there exists an external physical reality completely independent of us humans. I argue that with a sufficiently broad definition of mathematics, it implies the Mathematical Universe Hypothesis (MUH) that our physical world is an abstract mathematical structure. I discuss various implications of the ERH and MUH, ranging from standard physics topics like symmetries, irreducible representations, units, free parameters, randomness and initial conditions to broader issues like consciousness, parallel universes and (...) Gödel incompleteness. I hypothesize that only computable and decidable (in Gödel’s sense) structures exist, which alleviates the cosmological measure problem and may help explain why our physical laws appear so simple. I also comment on the intimate relation between mathematical structures, computations, simulations and physical systems. (shrink)

(shrink)
This paper presents an analysis of the systematic astronomical observations performed by Muḥyī al-Dīn al-Maghribī at the Maragha observatory between 1262 and 1274 AD. In a treatise entitled Talkhīṣ al-majisṭī, preserved in a unique copy at Leiden, Universiteitsbibliotheek, Muḥyī al-Dīn explains his observations and measurements of the Sun, the Moon, the superior planets, and eight reference stars. His measurements of the meridian altitudes of the Sun, the superior planets, and the eight bright stars were made using the mural quadrant of (...) the observatory, and the times of their meridian transit using a water clock. The mean absolute error in the meridian altitudes of the Sun is ~ 3.1′, of the superior planets ~ 4.6′, and of the eight fixed stars ~ 6.2′. The clepsydras used by Muḥyī al-Dīn could apparently fix time intervals with a precision of ± 5 min. His estimation of the magnitudes of three lunar eclipses observed in Maragha in 1262, 1270, and 1274 AD is in close agreement with modern data. (shrink)
The modern era which is now stepping on the industrial revolution 4.0 era has caused the human condition to change rapidly, they are “tempted” by technological sophistication so that they slowly forget and leave religion which ultimately leads to social and spiritual problems in the midst of society in addition to moral problems that cannot be solved with any technological sophistication. The focus of this research is to analyze and find a solution to solve this problem through the concept of (...) humanistic Sufism which was initiated by Said Aqil Siradj and Muh Amin Syukur. The findings produced are that humanistic Sufism Said Aqil and Amin Syukur are Sufism that teaches humans to be active in social life, pro-active to social problems, politics, economics, nationality, please help, tolerance, as well as to draw closer to God continuously. Humanistic Sufism also teaches to synergize between the world-hereafter, the soul-body, inner-soul, God-creature, social-individual, Sharia-nature. It is this moderate attitude which seeks to develop humanistic Sufism which later leads to the formation of social piety and spiritual piety that very relevant to the life of post modern people who are currently experiencing a social and spiritual crisis.
