A Kantian Solution to Thompson’s Puzzle about Justice.Ryan Fanselow - 2008 - Proceedings of the Xxii World Congress of Philosophy 10:91-99.
In a recent paper, Michael Thompson (2006) argues that there is a problem about justice that holds for Aristotlean, Humean, and Kantian views of ethics. To see his problem, consider the normative judgment that “X wronged Y by killing her.” Thompson thinks that Aristotelian, Humean, and Kantian views can show why Xdid something wrong by killing Y but they cannot show that X wronged Y, at least not without taking on intolerable moral, metaphysical, or epistemological commitments. I argue that the (...)

    Self-Evidence and Disagreement in Ethics.Ryan Fanselow - 2011 - Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy 5 (3):1-17.
Moral epistemology, like general epistemology, faces a regress problem. Suppose someone demands to know why I am justified in holding a moral belief. In a typical case, I will respond by citing a further moral belief that justifies it. A regress arises because, in order for this further belief to justify anything, it too must be justified. According to a traditional position in moral epistemology, moral foundationalism, the regress comes to an end with some moral beliefs. Moral foundationalism is an (...)

Without LTP the learning circuit is broken.Michael S. Fanselow - 1997 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 20 (4):616-616.
Since learning emerges from a circuit mediating behavior it is unrealistic to require LTP to be a sufficient explanation of it; however, LTP is a necessary component of some learning circuits. The properties of that component bear a closer formal relationship to the acquisition of associative strength than to the modulation of attention.

Optimality theory as a family of cumulative logics.Ph Besnard, G. Fanselow & T. Schaub - 2003 - Journal of Logic, Language and Information 12 (2):153-182.
We investigate two formalizations of Optimality Theory, a successful paradigm in linguistics. We first give an order-theoretic counterpart for the data and processinvolved in candidate evaluation.Basically, we represent each constraint as a function that assigns every candidate a degree of violation. As for the second formalization, we define (after Samek-Lodovici and Prince) constraints as operations that select the best candidates out of a set of candidates. We prove that these two formalizations are equivalent (accordingly, there is no loss of generality with using violation (...)

The Moral Foreign Language Effect: Do Languages Influence How We Make Moral Decisions?Bektas Ms - 2023 - Philosophy International Journal 6 (2):1-8.
Both philosophy and linguistics have emphasized the importance of language as a means of dialogue. Despite the fact that Wittgenstein added a new layer of complication to this point of view, the Sapir-Whorf theory, proposed by Edward Sapir and his colleague Benjamin Lee Whorf, helped the impact of language on the mind acquire notoriety. With this idea, language not only continued to be a means of communication but also received recognition in the social science curriculum as a crucial element in (...)

Whistle Blowing and Rational Loyalty.Wim Vandekerckhove & Ms Ronald Commers - 2004 - Journal of Business Ethics 53 (1-2):225-233.
Today's complex and decentralized organization gives rise to organizational needs for both loyalty and institutionalized whistle blowing. However, ethicists see a contradiction between both needs. This paper argues there is no such contradiction. It shows why earlier attempts to go beyond the dilemma are not satisfying. The solution proposed in this paper starts from an organizational perspective instead of an individual one. It does so by reframing the concept of loyalty into “rational loyalty”. This means that the object of loyalty (...)

Students’ Trust in Research-Based Results About Potential Health Risks Presented in Popular Media.Ivar Bråten & Helge I. Strømsø - 2017 - Bulletin of Science, Technology and Society 37 (1):3-14.
Socioscientific issues receive considerable public attention and there are concerns that people in general are not able or willing to deal with information at odds with what they believe to be true. In this study, we focused on students’ beliefs about two controversial issues: whether consumption of the artificial sweetener aspartame and use of cell phones, respectively, represent any serious health risks. Our aim was to investigate whether students’ trust in the information was related to prior beliefs, the nature of (...)
