Co-existential justice and individual freedom: the primary concern and the normative foundation of global ethics.People’S. Republic of Chinaan-Qing Deng Shanghai, Writes on Both Classical German Philosophy A. Professor of Philosophy, A. General History of Western Moral Philosophy History of Ethicsamong His Recent Books Are & A. General History of Western Moral Philosophy - forthcoming - Journal of Global Ethics:1-9.
In the discussion of global ethics, philosophical ethics risks losing its distinct theoretical horizons. This predicament arises primarily from philosophy's failure to anchor its own object and to provide a rational basis for global justice from within its current confined theoretical paradigm. Against this background, this paper will first prioritize global co-existence as the primary concern of global ethics, then propose ontological co-existence justice as its foundational principle, and finally argue that the normative validity of co-existence justice is predicated (...)

  2. What is a System of Moral Philosophy for? Systematicity in Kant’s Ethics.Stefano Bacin - 2025 - In Gabriele Gava, Thomas Sturm & Achim Vesper, Kant and the systematicity of the sciences. New York: Routledge.
Kant repeatedly stresses that moral philosophy shall find completion in the shape of a system. The present chapter focuses on three main aspects that characterise his view of the need of a system of ethics, suggesting that Kant's view should be construed in contrast with the current assumptions on the role of a system in moral philosophy. First, I argue that, in Kant’s view, the system of ethics does not pursue the coherentist project of systematising (...) beliefs. Systematicity in ethics is, for him, about unfolding the obligations that are justified by the fundamental principle, according to a Pufendorfian paradigm widespread in the eighteenth century. Second, I show that, in contrast not only to current assumptions, but also to the Pufendorfian paradigm, Kant’s systematic treatment of ethics is neither a logically consistent arrangement of demands, nor a complete collection of ethical duties, but a system of ends that yields an open-ended system of duty types. Third, I suggest that in Kant’s view a systematic treatment of ethics is supposed to provide orientation to moral thinking through a broader perspective from which perplexing cases should be considered by emphasizing the holistic character of ethical demands and clarifying their connections. Ethical considerations: basic issues in moral philosophy.Nicholas Rescher - 2015 - Lewiston, New York: The Edwin Mellen Press.
The present book is a further contribution to the ageless and ongoing discussion about basic philosophical problems such as the nature of ethical standards, and grounds of moral objectivity, and prospects of moral progress from eminent philosopher and well-known author, Nicholas Rescher. He examines a group of classic philosophical issues, relevant to this present age of moral ambiguity, and shares his reflections and opinions with his usual captivating analysis.

He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this (...)

    The libertarian foundations of Scotus's moral philosophy.Thomas Williams - 1998 - The Thomist 62 (2):193-215.
After setting out in part 1 Scotus's libertarian account of the will, I shall discuss two of the most important implications Scotus understood his account to have. First, according to Scotus, the Thomist understanding of the will as intellective appetite is inadequate to provide a libertarian account of freedom. Scotus therefore rejects that understanding and offers an alternative moral psychology. In part 2 of the paper I therefore draw attention to the passages in which Scotus offers his reasons for (...)

Between and beyond Consequentialism and Deontology: Reflections on Mencius’ Moral Philosophy.Tongdong Bai - 2022 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 49 (4):373-387.
Mencius’s account of the yi-li (righteousness-benefit) distinction is important in his moral philosophy, and is often compared with consequentialism or deontology in Western moral philosophy. After showing the problems with a naïve deontological reading and a sophisticated consequentialist reading of Mencius, I will argue that both a really sophisticated consequentialist reading and a non-Kantian deontological reading are more defensible. But they couldn’t address the inequality hidden in Mencius’s moral philosophy, making a Nietzschean reading possible. (...)
