This chapter examines Nietzsche's thinking on the concept of Mitleid and discusses the complexities of translating this concept into English in Dawn. It describes how Nietzsche's critical engagement with this concept is importantly dependent on the role of drives in his wider moral psychology. The chapter also examines the role of mood and social transmission of feeling in his critique, arguing that these factors play key roles in Nietzsche's development of a substantial critique of an ethic of compassion, and (...) in his pursuit of an alternative ethic. It shows how Nietzsche's exposure of an ethic of compassion as fundamentally flawed opens up the possibility of a reconfiguration of the concept of moral imagination, and facilitates development of a more robust, creative, and experimental concept of ethical imagination as a part of Nietzsche's broader effort to provide a framework for ongoing moral therapy. Wie kaum ein anderes Gefühl ist Mitleid von Unsicherheiten geprägt: Der Begriff »Mitleid« wird widersprüchlich verwendet - aber auch das Gefühl selbst kann schwanken. Dies wirft Fragen der Angemessenheit auf. Georg Sillers genaue Lektüre Ludwig Wittgensteins zeigt, dass solche Unbestimmtheiten jedoch nicht als Defizite gesehen werden müssen: Erstens sind psychologische Begriffe in ihrer Bedeutungsvielfalt Teil unserer Lebensform und damit mehr als die Bezeichnung von Zuständen, zweitens stellt schwankendes Mitleid eine ganz eigene Haltung dar - und zwar häufig (...) die des Respekts. Obwohl Rousseaus Mitleidsbegriff in heutige Verständnis weisen des Mitleids eingegangen ist spielt er in ihren Thematisierungen nur eine eher untergeordnete Rolle. Rousseaus Beitrag zum modernen Begriffsverständnis steht einerseits im Schatten des Einflusses anderer ethischer Gefühlsauffassungen. Andererseits liegen Ursachen für die periphere Stellung des Begriffes darin, dass er in Rousseaus Werk selbst nur an wenigen Stellen erörtert wird. Meine These ist, dass Rousseaus Begriff eine für die Moderne kennzeichnende ambivalente Struktur aufweist, die aus der Dominanz des Selbstbezuges resultiert. Die Rekonstruktion des (...) Begriffes gliedert sich in drei Teile: Zuerst verorte ich seine Position in Rousseaus Werk und fasse seine Bestimmungen zusammen; dann diskutiere ich seine Ambivalenzen auf der Ebene des individuellen Mitleidserlebens; abschließend nehme ich eine Revision und eine Bewertung des Begriffes vor. I argue that moral intuitions about Nietzsche as an exemplar of practical cruelty can be overturned. My argument is based upon the possibility of abandoning the notion of pure and unmediated passivity as intrinsic to the phenomena of human suffering and of Mitleid, as identified by Nietzsche. I claim that wrongly identifying intrinsic passivity in the phenomenology of Mitleid and of suffering generates the moral sceptical intuition. Once this case of mistaken identity is uncovered, 1 suggest, there is (...) no reason to remain subject to the force of the intuition. I support my account with a fresh reading of 'The Ugliest Man', from Book IV of Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra. (shrink)

ABSTRACTThis paper analyses Daybreak 138 closely line by line in order to examine whether Nietzsche's conclusion that ‘there is something degrading in suffering and something elevating and productive of superiority in pitying ’ truly holds. I shall argue that it does not. By way of objection to Nietzsche's conclusion, I am offering a counter example and also examine what, in the context of Daybreak 138, gratitude, revenge, and Mitleid have in common so that they can be used by Nietzsche (...) to pursue together a common goal. I suggest that the feature gratitude, revenge and Mitleid have in common is their usefulness to establish or maintain equality. (shrink)

The German-Jewish philosophers Hermann Cohen and Franz Rosenzweig, have - both in their own ways - produced systems of philosophy at a time that was supposed to be the time after systems. With their respective systems they - both in their own ways - transcended the apologetic stance of Jewish thought by placing the Jewishness of their thinking at a methodologically central point for?general philosophy.? However, the link between Cohen?s system and the Star of Redemption, is hard to find. Looking (...) back from the perspective of a?return of religion? in late twentieth century, the essay proposes to see the link between both systems in Cohen?s notion of compassion. Svojim sistemima su - takodje svaki na svoj nacin, prevazilazili apologetsko stanoviste jevrejske misli uspostavljajuci jevrejstvo svoje misli kao centralnu metodsku tacku?opste filozofije?. Medjutim, tesko je naci vezu izmedju Koenovog sistema i Zvezde iskupljenja. Gledajuci unazad, iz perspektive?povratka religije? u kasnom dvadesetom veku, rad pokusava da nedje vezu izmedju pomenuta dva sistema u Koenovom pojmu saosecanja. (shrink)

쇼펜하우어는 공감을 윤리학의 중심에 놓는 대표적인 철학자 중 한명이다. 그는 ‘이기주의(Egoismus)’를 변화할 수 없는 인간의 본성으로 보았고 ‘고통에 대한 공감(Mitleid)’을 이기주의를 극복할 수 있는 윤리의 기초로 삼는다. 왜 쇼펜하우어는 공감에서 윤리학의 가능성을 찾았을까? 기간 쇼펜하우어의 윤리학에 대한 연구들은 그의 철학 체계 내에서 형이상학과 윤리학의 관계를 해명하는 것에 집중되어 있었으며, 공감 개념에 관한 심도 있는 연구는 적다. 본 논문은 쇼펜하우어의 공감 규정에 주목할 것이고, 이를 통해 그가 공감을 윤리학의 기초로 삼을 수 있는 근거와 여기서 제기될 수 있는 몇 가지 난제를 (...) 검토할 것이다. 공감과 이기주의의 관계에 대한 쇼펜하우어의 입장은 명확하고 일관적인 것처럼 보이지만, 세부적으로 보면 모호하고 난해한 주장들을 포함하고 있다. 이러한 쇼펜하우어의 태도는 단순히 철저하지 못한 논의구도 때문이라기보다는 공감윤리학이 가질 수밖에 없는 한계 상황을 드러내는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 이러한 한계 상황은 역설적으로 현대의 공감윤리학이 나아가야 할 방향을 암시한다. Nietzsche is known for his penetrating critique of Mitleid. He seems to be critical of all compassion but at times also seems to praise a different form of compassion, which he refers to as “our compassion” and contrasts it with “your compassion”. Some commentators have interpreted this to mean that Nietzsche’s criticism is not as unconditional as it may seem – that he does not condemn compassion entirely. I disagree and contend that even though Nietzsche appears to speak favorably (...) of some forms of compassion, he regards the nature of all compassion to be fundamentally bad. Furthermore, I suggest that Nietzsche’s discussion on different forms of compassion have significant implications for achieving greatness and meaning in life. More specifically, I argue that, for Nietzsche, “our compassion,” however regrettable qua compassion it is, may give occasion for a rare and peculiar insight into “co-suffering” with others, which in turn results in overcoming compassion entirely. I also argue that although Nietzsche objects to compassion, he approves of a form of what feminist theorists might now call “anticipatory empathy.” Even though a large body of literature has evolved over Nietzsche’s critical evaluation of compassion, his understanding of a non-compassionate response to suffering is, in my view, rather overlooked and should receive more attention. У статті здійснено порівняльний аналіз філософських засад поняття «співчуття» у Ніцше (Mitleid, букв. «спів-страждання», або ж Mitgefühl, букв. «спів-чуття») та у філософії буддизму (санскр. каруна). У християнстві та буддизмі співчуття є однією з найважливіших духовних чеснот. Ніцше, навпаки, відомий своїм край негативним ставленням до співчуття як до форми страждання (так би мовити «страждання в квадраті»). Показано, що спільною вихідною точкою і метою для Ніцше і для буддизму є існування у світі страждання (нім. Leid, санскр. духкха) і необхідність його подолання. (...) При цьому боротьба проти страждання виводить обидва філософські проєкти «за межі добра і зла» (звичайної конвенційної моралі), у площину абсолютної, «онтологічної» моралі або етики «порожнечі». Унаслідок цього буддійський ідеал співчуття, спрямований на цілковите знищення страждання як атрибуту сансаричного буття, значно ближчий Ніцше, ніж християнське бачення співчуття його західними сучасниками, яке він сприймав як форму фатального світоглядного нігілізму. ABSTRACT: Beginning with the analysis of the Mitleid, understood as the metaphysical foundation of Arthur Schopenhauer’s ethics, this contribution aims to investigate the ‘pathological criterion’ as instituting a new direction in contemporary ethics, in order to develop and actualize it in the perspective of a patient-oriented ethics.

Der von Anne Tilkorn herausgegebene Sammelband Kant und Spinoza. Motivationen fur das Selbst beschaftigt sich mit den verborgenen Gemeinsamkeiten der beiden Philosophen in ihren Letztbegrundungen fur moralisches Handeln. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei die Begriffe der Selbstreferenz und Freiheit. Die Beitrage gehen den Folgen der sowohl bei Kant als auch bei Spinoza anzutreffenden Grundannahme einer "Ent-Aristotelisierung" auf dem Gebiet der Motivationstheorien, also der praktischen Philosophie nach. Dass zum Handeln auch eine Motivation gehort, ist fur beide Denker klar. Spinoza wie Kant wussten (...) um die Relevanz des Gefuhls - nicht als Fundament einer Moral, aber als notwendiger Beweggrund fur den Vollzug des moralischen Tuns. Und sie haben des Ofteren dieselbe Einschatzung hinsichtlich des Stellenwerts bestimmter Gefuhle: So sehen sie beide im Mitleid eine Schwache und keine Tugend, von beiden Philosophen ist der Ausspruch "Die Tugend ist ihr eigener Lohn" bekannt. Doch wo begegnen sich ihre Theoriestrukturen? Trotz der auf den ersten Blick so grossen Differenzen - Spinozas Determinismus versus Kants freier Wille, Spinozas Ansatz einer Einheit von Theorie und Praxis versus Kants strikte Unterscheidung zwischen theoretischer und praktischer Vernunft - lassen sich viele kongruente Linien in ihren Argumenten entdecken, die nun in fundierten Einzelstudien herausgestellt werden. Die Abhandlung „Immanuel Kant über das moralische Gefühl der Achtung“ legt nach einer Einführung in den historischen und werkgeschichtlichen Hintergrund wesentliche systematische Züge des moralischen Gefühls der Achtung dar. Es wird gezeigt, dass das apriorische Gefühl der Achtung einerseits von allen anderen empirischen Gefühlen unterschieden, dennoch aber ein Gefühl ist und in seiner spezifischen Sonderstellung drei bedeutende moralphilosophische Funktionen übernehmen kann: eine evaluative, eine kausale und eine bildende Funktion. Kants These, dass es im strengen Sinn nur ein rein moralisches Gefühl (...) gibt, wird gegen ein graduierendes Modell der moralischen Relevanz von Gefühlen diskutiert und gegen alternative klassische Deutungen des moralischen Gefühls wie die Liebe, die Sympathie und das Mitleid abgewogen. Many philosophers have endorsed G. E. Moore’s principle of organic unities – according to which the value of a whole must not be assumed to be the same as the sum of the values of its parts – claiming this principle to be of fundamental importance to ethics. In this paper, I cast doubt on the principle. In Section 1, I provide a provisional reformulation of the principle of organic unities and contrast such unities with mere sums of value. In (...) Section 2, I do some groundwork in order to arrive at an account of the part–whole relation with which the principle of organic unities is concerned. In so doing, I provide some further reformulations of that principle. In Section 3, I discuss the isolation method that Moore proposes for determining the value of something, and then, in Section 4, I begin an extended discussion of a particular example of an alleged organic unity, namely, Schadenfreude. I explain why some philosophers claim that such pleasure constitutes an organic unity, but I also present reasons for denying this claim. In Section 5, I pursue one of these reasons in particular, a reason that appeals to the concept of what I call evaluative inadequacy, and, in Section 6, I seek to motivate this appeal by drawing on the relation between value and fitting attitudes. In so doing, I provide still further reformulations of the principle of organic unities. In Section 7, I entertain objections to my account of Schadenfreude, one of which requires one final reformulation of the principle of organic unities, and then, in Section 8, I discuss the more general objection that, even if my reasons for denying that Schadenfreude constitutes an organic unity are cogent, these reasons do not extend to other alleged organic unities, such as the related phenomenon of Mitleid. In the final section, I address the significance of the debate about whether the principle of organic unities is true. (shrink)

Vor mehr als 150 Jahren formulierte Arthur Schopenhauer in seiner Preisschrift über die Grundlage der Moral Kritikpunkte an Äußerungen Kants zum moralischen Verhältnis des Menschen zu den Tieren, die seither zu den tierethischen Standardvorwürfen an die Adresse der Kantischen Ethik gehören und ihr völlige tierethische Leistungsunfähigkeit attestieren. Schopenhauer sieht jede „ächte Moral“ durch den Satz beleidigt, daß die vernunftlosen Wesen Sachen wären und daher auch bloß als Mittel, die nicht zugleich Zweck sind, behandelt werden dürften. In Uebereinstimmung hiemit wird, in (...) den Metaphysischen Anfangsgründen der Tugendlehre, § 16, ausdrücklich gesagt: ‚Der Mensch kann keine Pflicht gegen irgend ein Wesen haben, als bloß gegen den Menschen‘; und dann heißt es § 17: ‚Die grausame Behandlung der Thiere ist der Pflicht des Menschen gegen sich selbst entgegen; weil sie das Mitgefühl an ihrem Leiden im Menschen abstumpft, wodurch eine der Moralität im Verhältniß zu anderen Menschen sehr diensame, natürliche Anlage geschwächt wird.‘ Also bloß zur Uebung soll man mit Thieren Mitleid haben, und sie sind gleichsam das pathologische Phantom zur Uebung des Mitleids mit Menschen.
