Britain's New Preimplantation Tissue Typing Policy: An Ethical Defence.N. R. Ram - 2006 - Journal of Medical Ethics 32 (5):278-282.
The UK Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority was right to permit tissue typing preimplantation genetic diagnosisOn July 21 2004, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority , Britain’s regulatory agency for reproductive technologies, revised its policy on preimplantation genetic diagnosis for tissue typing.1,2 The authority of the HFEA to enact such a policy was affirmed by the UK’s highest court, the House of Lords, on April 28 2005.3 Preimplantation genetic diagnosis combines in vitro fertilisation with genetic testing. In PGD, embryos generally (...)

  2. Legitimacy Beyond the State: Institutional Purposes and Contextual Constraints.N. P. Adams, Antoinette Scherz & Cord Schmelzle - 2020 - Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy 23 (3):281-291.
The essays collected in this special issue explore what legitimacy means for actors and institutions that do not function like traditional states but nevertheless wield significant power in the global realm. They are connected by the idea that the specific purposes of non-state actors and the contexts in which they operate shape what it means for them to be legitimate and so shape the standards of justification that they have to meet. In this introduction, we develop this guiding methodology further (...)

Introduction: Peace by Means of Culture.Miguel Tamen, Michiko Urita, Michael N. Nagler, Gary Saul Morson, Oleg Kharkhordin, Lindsay Diggelmann, John Watkins, Jack Zipes & James Trilling - 2016 - Common Knowledge 22 (2):181-189.
It is often argued that a shared culture, or at least shared cultural references or practices, can help to foster peace and prevent war. This essay examines in detail and criticizes one such argument, made by Patrick Leigh Fermor, in the context of his discussing an incident during World War II, when he and a captured German general found a form of agreement, a ground for peace between them, in their both knowing Horace's ode I.9 by heart in Latin. By (...)

Legitimacy Beyond the State: Normative and Conceptual Questions.Antoinette Scherz, Cord Schmelzle & N. P. Adams (eds.) - 2021 - Abingdon, UK: Routledge.
This volume addresses the normative legitimacy of the international order, asking how we can make sense of legitimacy claims of increasingly diverse global governance institutions and practices and how their legitimacy relates to and differs from state legitimacy. -/- State legitimacy is a central concern of modern political thought but is inadequate when applied to institutions that differ from the state in type, level of governance, scope, and much else. We need a new, tailored approach to the legitimacy of institutions (...)

We use data from the Mark II experiment at PEP to search for the process B→h0X for mh0 between 50 and 210 MeV/c2. No evidence for the Higgs boson is seen in this mass range. The limit obtained rules out the standard Higgs boson for masses between 70 and 210 MeV/c2 and significantly constrains extensions of the Higgs sector. © 1989.

Equity, Utility, and the Marketplace: Emerging Ethical Issues of Umbilical Cord Blood Banking in Australia. [REVIEW]Gabrielle N. Samuel & Ian H. Kerridge - 2007 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 4 (1):57-63.
Over the past decade, umbilical cord blood (UCB) has routinely been used as a source of haematopoietic stem cells for allogeneic stem cell transplants in the treatment of a range of malignant and non-malignant conditions affecting children and adults. UCB banks are a necessary part of the UCB transplant program, but their establishment has raised a number of important scientific, ethical and political issues. This paper examines the scientific and clinical evidence that has provided the basis for the establishment of (...)

Data taken by the Mark II detector at the PEP storage ring was used to measure the rate of dilepton production in multihadronic events produced by e+e- annihilation at √s=29 GeV. We determine the probability that a hadron initially containing a b quark decays to a positive lepton to be 0.17-0.08+0.15, with 90% confidence level limits of 0.06 and 0.38. © 1990.

One of these problems is how to restory a life and construct new body/self relationships and identities over time. To explore this process, we focus on the life stories of a small group of men (n = 14) who have suffered SCI and become disabled through playing (...)

The coronavirus disease pandemic fundamentally disrupted humans’ social life and behavior. Public health measures may have inadvertently impacted how people care for each other. This study investigated prosocial behavior, its association well-being, and predictors of prosocial behavior during the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and sought to understand whether region-specific differences exist. Participants from eight regions clustering multiple countries around the world responded to a cross-sectional online-survey investigating the psychological consequences of the first upsurge of lockdowns in spring 2020. Species of Bassaricyon are primarily forest-living, arboreal, nocturnal, frugivorous, and solitary, and have one young at a time. We demonstrate that four olingo species can be recognized, including a Central American species (Bassaricyon gabbii), lowland species with (...)

    Axiomatizability by {{\ Forall}{\ Exists}!}-Sentences.Miguel Campercholi & Diego Vaggione - 2011 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 50 (7-8):713-725.
A ${\forall\exists!}$ -sentence is a sentence of the form ${\forall x_{1}\cdots x_{n}\exists!y_{1}\cdots y_{m}O(\overline{x},\overline{y})}$ , where O is a quantifier-free formula, and ${\exists!}$ stands for “there exist unique”. We prove that if ${\mathcal{C}}$ is (up to isomorphism) a finite class of finite models then ${\mathcal{C}}$ is axiomatizable by a set of ${\forall\exists!}$ -sentences if and only if ${\mathcal{C}}$ is closed under isomorphic images, ${\mathcal{C}}$ has the intersection property, and ${\mathcal{C}}$ is closed under fixed-point submodels. This result is employed to characterize the (...)

Carlos Miguel Herrera Et Arnaud Le Pillouer , Comment Écrit-on L’Histoire Constitutionnelle?: Paris, Editions Kimé, 2012, 198 Pp.Jean-Marie Denquin - 2014 - International Journal for the Semiotics of Law - Revue Internationale de Sémiotique Juridique 27 (3):557-562.

All knowledge, animal and human, is nothing but the more or less conscious expression of the intelligibility of nature. Substance is (...)

The post-secular transformation of the relation between religion and rationality.
