Sartre voulait élucider les déterminations qui ont fait de lui un écrivain. Ces analyses montrent la construction progressive d'une image de soi avec la prédominance d'une problématique narcissique déniée par l'auteur. La notion d'«universel singulier» fondatrice de l'oeuvre est particulièrement étudiée.

Picking up where the work of F. L. Lapointe left off, this new bibliography has more than 6,000 reference points providing thorough coverage of Jean-Paul Sartre from 1980 to 1992. More than 3,400 main entries are clearly presented in chronological order. Also included are 200 doctoral theses, a name index with more than 2,400 authors, and a book index.

The writings published here are not so much an epitome as episodes. But most do not digress. They mark the turns and turning points of a human style, the tropes of an expressive life embodying the changing tempos of an age. Until we fall silent, all of us are trying to say.
