    MELAS (Mitochondriale Enzephalomyopathie, Laktazidose und Schlaganfall-ähnliche Episoden) – eine neue Diagnose von Nietzsches Krankheit.Christiane Koszka - 2010 - Nietzsche-Studien 39 (1):573-578.
After prolonged illness, Friedrich Nietzsche died (...)

    Examining the Public Refusal to Consent to DNA Biobanking: Empirical Data From a Swedish Population-Based Study.P. A. Melas, L. K. Sjoholm, T. Forsner, M. Edhborg, N. Juth, Y. Forsell & C. Lavebratt - 2010 - Journal of Medical Ethics 36 (2):93-98.
Objectives To investigate empirically the motivations for not consenting to DNA biobanking in a Swedish population-based study and to discuss the implications. Design Structured questionnaires and semistructured interviews. Setting A longitudinal epidemiological project (PART) ongoing since 1998 in Stockholm, Sweden. The DNA-collection wave took place during 2006–7. Participants 903 individuals completed the questionnaire (participation rate 36%) and 23 were interviewed. All individuals had participated in both non-genetic waves of the project, but refused to contribute saliva samples during the DNA-collection wave. (...)

    Cournot’s Notion of Hasard: An Objective Conception of Chance.Alessandra Melas - 2017 - Axiomathes 27 (6):685-697.
According to Antoine Augustine Cournot, chance events are the result of the intersection between independent causal chains. This coincidental notion of chance is not a new one, but—as Cournot remarks—it comes from Saint Thomas Aquinas, Boethius, and more probably from Jean de La Placette. Such a conception of chance phenomena seems to be very important, not only because it is closely related to the Principle of Causality, but also since it grounds Cournot’s theory of objective probability. Starting from Martin’s work, (...)

The Mahā Kumbh Melā in Allahabad 2013: Hindu Renouncers Between Mundaneness and the Extramundane.Cora Gäbel - 2018 - Zeitschrift für Religionswissenschaft 26 (1):52-84.
The following article deals with the Mahā Kumbh Melā1 in Allahabad and the practices of Hindu world renouncers2 during this festival. In 2013, the year under study, approximately 120 million renouncers and lay pilgrims attended the festival. After a brief overview of the academic discussion on Hindu renunciation, the article proceeds to outline the mythology, history, and meaning of the Kumbh Melā. Subsequently, it presents the festival from the renouncers’ point of view. This section of the article summarizes the functions (...)

Opinions Among Pediatric Critical Care Physicians Regarding the Ethics of Withdrawal of Ventricular Assist Devices and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.Antonia A. Melas, Leanna L. Huard, Rong Guo & Robert B. Kelly - forthcoming - Clinical Ethics:147775092110015.
Background Pediatric critical care physician attitudes about withdrawal of ventricular assist devices and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in cases of medical futility are poorly defined. Our aim was to define current attitudes regarding the withdrawal of these devices. Methods IRB-approved, cross-sectional observational survey conducted among pediatric critical care attending physicians and fellow physicians in the United States between 2016 and 2017. Data was collected anonymously and statistically analyzed. Results A total of 158 physicians responded with 67% being attending physicians. Compared to (...)

    On the Nature of Coincidental Events.Alessandra Melas & Pietro Salis - 2020 - Axiomathes:1-26.
It is a common opinion that chance events cannot be understood in causal terms. Conversely, according to a causal view of chance, intersections between independent causal chains originate accidental events, called “coincidences.” The present paper takes into proper consideration this causal conception of chance and tries to shed new light on it. More precisely, starting from Hart and Honoré’s view of coincidental events, this paper furnishes a more detailed account on the nature of coincidences, according to which coincidental events are (...)

    Photon Induced Tunneling Oscillations in a Double Quantum Well.G. J. Papadopoulos & P. Melas - 2001 - Foundations of Physics 31 (1):165-175.
Tunneling oscillations induced in a double quantum well by a monochromatic electromagnetic wave incident perpendicularly to the plane of the well, and polarized along the direction of its growth, are treated. For the wave frequency in proximity to the energy difference between two states of opposite symmetry, a periodic energy exchange between the wave and a carrier which moves from one energy state to the other is established. When the carrier starts from the low energy level it borrows energy from (...)

Nesnáze introspekce: svoboda rozhodování a morální jednání z pohledu filozofie a vědy.

So a frenzied matron cries out to Phoebus as she rushes through an appalled Rome. In CQ 34 , 454f. I pointed out that the words primos in ortus could not here bear their normal sense ‘to the far east’ , which in view of the next line would be geographically absurd, and, distraught as the lady was, even so highly improbable. I did, however, then think R. J. Getty right in taking the expression primos ortus as simply = ‘the (...)

Elymnion, according to Stephanos, was S000983880002084X_inline4 The name occurs in Aristophanes {Peace, 1126) in a context which points to the neighbourhood of Oreos. There is no evidence to connect it immediately with Chalkis. Mela mentions an Echinia near Akanthos: ' inter Strymona et Athon Turris Calarnaea et portus Capru, urbs Acanthos et Echinia.' Confusion of A and X is easy. Thus, even if the first sentence has no ol, the passage gives no safe evidence that these settlers came to (...)

Geography as the Eye of Enlightenment Historiography: Robert J. Mayhew.Robert J. Mayhew - 2010 - Modern Intellectual History 7 (3):611-627.
Whilst Edward Gibbon's Memoirs of My Life comprise a notoriously complex document of autobiographical artifice, there is no reason to question the honesty of its revelation of his attitudes to geography and its relationship to the historian's craft. Writing of his boyhood before going up to Oxford, Gibbon commented that his vague and multifarious reading could not teach me to think, to write, or to act; and the only principle, that darted a ray of light into the indigested chaos, was (...)

The Legal Fiction in Criminal Proceedings – Is It Historical Anachronism or Objectively Conditional Necessity?Artūras Panomariovas - 2011 - Jurisprudencija: Mokslo darbu žurnalas 18 (2):725-738.
Quite often, for one or the other purpose, the fact (or phenomenon) that does not exist is presented to the society or individuals as the real, really existing although it (the fact or phenomenon) simply does not exist in the real life. And often the term “fiction” is used to describe such phenomena. Although fiction is considered an inseparable companion of a social life, the question arises what the actual (true) fiction is and whether the use of it in criminal (...)
