We report the identification of a recurrent, 520-kb 16p12.1 microdeletion associated with childhood developmental delay. The microdeletion was detected in 20 of 11,873 cases compared with 2 of 8,540 controls and replicated in a second series of 22 of 9,254 cases compared with 6 of 6,299 controls. Most deletions were inherited, with carrier parents likely to manifest neuropsychiatric phenotypes compared to non-carrier parents. Probands were more likely to carry an additional large copy-number variant when compared to matched controls. The clinical (...)

Analyzing Reflective Narratives to Assess the Ethical Reasoning of Pediatric Residents.Margaret Moon, Holly A. Taylor, Erin L. McDonald, Mark T. Hughes, Mary Catherine Beach & Joseph A. Carrese - 2013 - Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics 3 (2):165-174.
A limiting factor in ethics education in medical training has been difficulty in assessing competence in ethics. This study was conducted to test the concept that content analysis of pediatric residents’ personal reflections about ethics experiences can identify changes in ethical sensitivity and reasoning over time. Analysis of written narratives focused on two of our ethics curriculum’s goals: 1) To raise sensitivity to ethical issues in everyday clinical practice and 2) to enhance critical reflection on personal and professional values as (...)

“The King of Terrors” Revisited: The Smallpox Vaccination Campaign and its Lessons for Future Biopreparedness.Cynthia P. Schneider & Michael D. McDonald - 2003 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 31 (4):580-589.
“Smallpox was always present, filling the churchyard with corpses, tormenting with constant fear all whom it had not yet stricken, leaving on those whose lives it spared the hideous traces of its power, turning the babe into a changeling at which the mother shuddered, and making the eyes and cheeks of the betrothed maiden objects of horror to the lover.” In 1848, British historian T.B. Macaulay first captured the picture of the devastation smallpox wreaked on its victims, but the “King (...)

Toward Mutual Recognition: Relational Psychoanalysis and the Christian Narrative.Marie T. Hoffman - 2010 - Routledge.
Ever since its nascent days, psychoanalysis has enjoyed an uneasy coexistence with religion. However, in recent decades, many analysts have been more interested in the healing potential of both psychoanalytic and religious experience and have explored how their respective narrative underpinnings may be remarkably similar. In _Toward Mutual Recognition_, Marie T. Hoffman takes just such an approach. Coming from a Christian perspective, she suggests that the current relational turn in psychoanalysis has been influenced by numerous theorists - analysts and (...)

    Affordable Health Care.Marie T. Hilliard - 2014 - The National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly 14 (1):47-52.
Evidence suggests that the nurse’s role as an advocate for patients and for the professional right to conscience is being eroded because of a lack of conscience protections in the Patient Affordable Care Act and because of a faulty understanding in general of the separation of church and state. While the main task of the principle of separation of church and state is to secure religious liberty, the principle is increasingly interpreted in a secularist way to mean that religion must (...)

    Myelin Po‐protein, more than just a structural protein?Marie T. Filbin & Gihan I. Tennekoon - 1992 - Bioessays 14 (8):541-547.
The protein Po has long been proposed to be responsible for the compact nature of peripheral myelin through interactions of both its extracellular and cytoplasmic domains. Recent studies support such a role for Po's extracellular region while more precise mapping of its adhesive domains are ongoing. As Po is a member of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily and perhaps bears the closest similarity to the ancestral molecule of this whole family, these studies may also have more general implications for adhesive interactions. Whether one is concerned with human trafficking and the contemporary slave trade, the global economy, or endless wars, these essays further the conversation on social justice as informed by the writings of Augustine of Hippo.

Today the connection between "person" and the "I" is acknowledged in many respects but not always analyzed. The need to relate it to the reality of the human being has sparked the present investigation of the philosophical anthropology of four thinkers from the late ancient, medieval, and contemporary periods. Although it may seem that the question of the role of the "I" with respect to the human being hinges on the larger problem of objectivity v. subjectivity, this does not seem (...)

Strategic and principled approach to the ethical challenges of epilepsy monitoring unit triage.Jason Randhawa, Chantelle T. Hrazdil, Patrick J. McDonald & Judy Illes - 2023 - Journal of Medical Ethics 49 (2):81-86.
Electroencephalographic monitoring provides critical diagnostic and management information about patients with epilepsy and seizure mimics. Admission to an epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) is the gold standard for such monitoring in major medical facilities worldwide. In many countries, access can be challenged by limited resources compared to need. Today, triaging admission to such units is generally approached by unwritten protocols that vary by institution. In the absence of explicit guidance, decisions can be ethically taxing and are easy to challenge. In an (...)

Polycentric leadership is a growing issue in the global missions movement. The focus of this article is to help readers understand polycentrism broadly and examine what it means for those seeking to lead fruitfully in God’s mission. Examples will be provided to illustrate what polycentric leadership can look like. Biblical and theological convictions that shape leaders who work out of this paradigm will be examined. The reality of tension points experienced by people who desire to lead from this paradigm will (...)
