El escándalo mayor para Borges es el tiempo y ante ese horror, sólo cabe para él construir un universo apoyado en la intuición metafísica de que el tiempo es una ilusión. Si la verdad pertenece al mundo de las ideas como para Platón, el tiempo adquirirá su sentido en función de la enternidad, si no tendremos que pensar que la eternidad es sólo una imagen cuyo soporte es el tiempo. En el trabajo se analizan dos obras La muerte vivida, El (...) inmortal donde Borges pone de relieve el carácter dramático de su concepción del tiempo, como circularidad y se comenta Funes el memorioso en que se establece la relación entre ese tipo de temporalidad y la memoria. Borges presenta a Funes como un superhombre al estilo nietzscheano que cae en el mayor error que puede caer el superhombre, tener memoria. Un tiempo circular es un tiempo sin memoria, pero Funes no es un auténtico superhombre, para él, el recuerdo sigue manteniendo esa estructura temporal que se manifiesta en la descripción. (shrink)

In the contemporary context of increasing inequality and various forms of segregation, this volume analyzes the transition to neoliberal politics in Santiago de Chile. In this paper the scientific trajectory of Spanish influential biochemist Alberto Sols (1917–1989) is presented in comparative perspective. His social and academic environment, his research training under the Cori's in the US in the early 1950s and his works when coming back to Spain to develop his own scientific career are described in order to present the central argument of this paper on his path from physiological research to research on enzymatic regulation. Sols' main contributions were both scientific and academic. (...) In Lewin et al. 359–386) the authors proved that certain systems of annotated logics are algebraizable in the sense of Block and Rigozzi 396). Later in Lewin et al. the study of the associated quasi-varieties of annotated algebras is initiated. In this paper we continue the study of the these classes of algebras, in particular, we report some recent results about the free annotated algebras.

In the Eurotransplant region transplantable kidneys from cadaveric donors are allocated according to the Wujciak-Opelz algorithm. This paper shows that the algorithm as it stands fulfils certain normative standards of a more formal nature while violating others. In view of these insights, it is explored how the algorithm could perhaps be improved. Even if issues of substantial rather than formal adequacy need to be addressed separately, analyses as presented in this paper can prepare the ground for a discussion of substantive (...) normative issues. In any event, axiomatic accounts can tell us something about what we are in fact doing when using a procedure like the Wujciak-Opelz algorithm. (shrink)

The goal of this paper is to propose a unified approach to the split scope readings of negative indefinites, comparative quantifiers, and numerals. There are two main observations that justify this approach. First, split scope shows the same kinds of restrictions across these different quantifiers. Second, split scope always involves low existential force. In our approach, following Sauerland, natural language determiner quantifiers are quantifiers over choice functions, of type <<,t>,t>. In split readings, the quantifier over choice functions scopes above other (...) operators (such as intensional verbs like must or can). Determiner quantifiers leave a choice-function trace when they move and this trace combines with the noun restriction, which is interpreted low. That split scope always involves low existential force is derived, without stipulation, from Kratzer’s idea that low existential force can be achieved via binding (into the noun restriction).
