Inhibition, Contextual Segregation, and Subject Strategies in List Method Directed Forgetting.Tony Whetstone, Mark D. Cross & Lauren M. Whetstone - 1996 - Consciousness and Cognition 5 (4):395-417.
This experiment tested alternative explanations of list method directed forgetting effects. Two word lists were studied by 135 subjects. Between lists, subjects were instructed to remember both lists , remember both lists as well as in which list words were studied , or to forget the first list and remember the second . All subjects took both recall and recognition tests with test order varied between subjects. Among subjects who took the recall test first, the forget group showed a directed (...)

Comparative education for global citizenship, peace and shared living through uBuntu.N'Dri Thérèse Assié-Lumumba, Michael Cross, Kanishka Bedi & Sakunthala Ekanayake (eds.) - 2022 - Boston: Brill.
There is a dire need today to create spaces in which people can make meaning of their existence in the world, abiding by cultural frameworks and practices that acknowledge and validate a meaningful existence for all. People are not just isolated individuals but are connected in diverse ways with other persons within our natural and social environment which is part of the whole universe. The African philosophy of uBuntu or humaneness is re-emerging for its timely relevance and potential as indispensable (...)

Understanding sexual violence and factors related to police outcomes.Kari Davies, Ruth Spence, Emma Cummings, Maria Cross & Miranda A. H. Horvath - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
In the year ending March 2020, an estimated 773,000 people in England and Wales were sexually assaulted. These types of crimes have lasting effects on victims’ mental health, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. There is a large body of literature which identifies several factors associated with the likelihood of the victim reporting a sexual assault to the police, and these differences may be due to rape myth stereotypes which perpetuate the belief that rape is only “real” under certain (...)

Control of conscious contents in directed forgetting and thought suppression.Tony Whetstone & Mark Cross - 1998 - PSYCHE: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Research On Consciousness 4.
Directed forgetting is a successful method for thought control whereas thought suppression is notoriously ineffective. We tested a specific hypothesis about what difference between the two paradigms causes the difference in outcomes. Both paradigms instruct participants to suppress certain thoughts, but in thought suppression experiments participants are also told to report intrusions of unwanted thoughts. We added a condition to the typical directed forgetting experiment that instructed participants to report intrusions. When participants tried to forget a word list but also (...)
