At the centre of discussion lies the reception of Plato’s philosophy, particularly his theory of Ideas, in Kant’s moral philosophy, his ethics and his doctrine of right. Kant saw himself as a follower of Platonism insofar as its anti-empiri­cist principles of human conduct are concerned, although his own version of practical rationalism differs considerably from Plato’s. This is also true of Kant’s conception of freedom and of human rights. The greatest impact on Kant’s moral philosophy is due to the doctrine (...) of the two worlds, the mundus sensibilis and the mundus intelligibilis, which did not originate in Plato himself, but in the Jewish Platonist Philo of Alexandria. Kant reinterpreted this doctrine by taking the intelligible world as a moral world consisting of free rational agents who ought to transform the empirical world of human society and history according to the norms and standards of moral laws. This was meant to be a programme for a moral reform of the human world, both with regard to individual moral­ity and to the cosmopolitical task of the establishment of an international order of legal institutions. Kant’s practical Platonism insists on the creation of a moral world order through human actions that take their lead from pure practical reason. (shrink)

Es handelt sich um historische und systematisch orientierte Studien zur kritischen Philosophie Kants, die die Forschungen von Julius Ebbinghaus und Klaus Reich fortführen.

In Italy, a judge reduced the sentence of a defendant by 1 year in response to evidence for a genetic predisposition to violence. The best characterized of these genetic differences, those in the monoamine oxidase A (MAOA), were cited as especially relevant. Several months previously in the USA, MAOA data contributed to a jury reducing charges from 1st degree murder (a capital offence) to voluntary manslaughter. Is there a rational basis for this type of use of MAOA evidence in criminal (...) court? This paper will review in context recent work on the MAOA gene–environment interaction in predisposing individuals to violence and address the relevance of such findings to murder trials. Interestingly, the MAOA genetic variants impact future violence and aggression only when combined with the adverse environmental stimuli of childhood maltreatment. Thus nature and nurture interact to determine the individual’s risk. Based on current evidence, I argue there is a weak case for mitigation. But should future experiments confirm the hypothesis that individual differences in impulse control and response to provocation found in MAOA-L men (without abuse) are significantly magnified when combined with childhood maltreatment, the case could turn into a stronger one. The article first shows how Kant's universal law of Right can be derived from the supreme principle of the doctrine of morals . Furthermore, the relationship between the supreme principle of the doctrine of virtue and the supreme principle of the doctrine of morals is shown to be one of specification. Establishing particular duties of virtue on the basis of the supreme principle of the doctrine of virtue consists of the a priori determination of ends, the adoption of which is (...) a duty for human beings in relation to others and to themselves. This determination is accomplished by connecting the formal principle of the moral possibility of maxims with the prohibition against indifference toward humanity as the capacity to set ends. The supreme principle of all duties of virtue therefore can be seen as an additional, substantive moral principle. In the second part of the article, the derivation of a specific duty of virtue, namely the duty of beneficence toward those in need of help, as a duty of love, provides an example. The third and final part deals with Henry Allison's criticisms of Kant's arguments in support of obligatory ends. Die Abhandlung zeigt zunächst, wie Kants allgemeines Rechtsgesetz aus dem obersten Moralprinzip hergeleitet werden kann. Ebenso wird das Verhältnis des obersten Prinzips der Tugendlehre zum obersten Prinzip der Sittenlehre als das einer Spezifikation bestimmt. Die Begründung besonderer Tugendpflichten aus dem Prinzip der Tugendlehre besteht nun in der apriorischen Bestimmung von Zwecken, die zu haben für den Menschen im Verhältnis zu sich und anderen Pflicht ist, aus der Verbindung des formalen Prinzips der moralischen Möglichkeit von Maximen mit dem Indifferenzverbot gegenüber der Menschheit als Vermögen der Zwecksetzung überhaupt. Das oberste Prinzip aller Tugendpflichten kann also als ein zusätzliches, materiales Moralprinzip angesehen werden. Im zweiten Teil wird eine bestimmte Tugendpflicht, die Liebespflicht der Wohltätigkeit gegenüber Hilfsbedürftigen, beispielhaft abgeleitet. Markus Baum widmet sich zweier Begründungs- und Theorieformen: der Kommunikationstheorie Habermas’ und der älteren Kritischen Theorie. Sein Ziel ist es, aufzuzeigen, dass der Anspruch der Theorie des kommunikativen Handelns nur zu erfüllen ist, wenn spezifische Intentionen der älteren Kritischen Theorie in den Rahmen der Theorie Habermas’ überführt werden. Von dieser Diskussion ausgehend werden die Methode der hermeneutischen Interpretation, der Begriff des sozialen Kampfes und der Bereich des Ästhetischen behutsam im Paradigma der Intersubjektivität verortet, sodass sie nicht in Widerspruch zu dessen (...) axiomatischen Annahmen geraten. Since the 1980s, the mass media have changed the way they cover major political stories, like foreign policy crises. As a consequence, what the public learns about these events has changed. More media outlets cover major events than in the past, including the entertainment-oriented soft news media. When they do cover a political story, soft news outlets focus more on than traditional news media and less on the political or strategic context, or substantive nuances, of policy debates. Many Americans who (...) previously ignored most political news now attend to some information about major political events, like wars, via the soft news media. These changes have important implications for democratic politics. Most importantly, a large number of particularly persuadable potential voters are now tuning in to politics via soft news outlets. This gives politicians an incentive to develop strategies for reaching out to them. Such individuals care less about the nuances of policy and more about the personality of leaders and any sensational human drama that a policy, like a war, entails. Soft news consumers care less about geopolitics than about body bags. Politicians who want their votes are therefore likely to emphasize body bags more than geopolitics. In short, the media environment changes both the style and substance of politics in democracies. (shrink)
