This review article offers a discussion of some aspects of the historical and conceptual context when the term “ontology” (Lat. ontologia) was first introduced in the scholarly circles of the early 17th century. In particular, Barry Smith's (2022) analysis of the birth of ontology provides a springboard for some further remarks on the author of the work with the first known occurrence of the word “ontologia”, Jacob Lorhard, including an analysis of his relationship with earlier philosophers Petrus Ramus and (...) À proprement parler, la première « ontologie » de l’histoire fut publiée en 1606 par Jacob Lorhard, recteur du Gymnasium réformé de Saint-Gall. L’article examine l’ontologie de Lorhard en la replaçant dans son contexte suisse, celui d’une « municipalisation » de la théologie qui concerna aussi la métaphysique. Nous proposons d’abord une caractérisation « macrologique » de l’ontologie scolastique moderne par différence d’avec les voies différentes empruntées par les métaphysiques jésuites du xvi e siècle. Au niveau « micrologique (...) » ensuite, le cas de Saint-Gall permet de comparer les modèles métaphysiques des réformés et ceux des moines de l’Abbaye bénédictine. Les métaphysiques monastiques offrent de nouvelles perspectives à la recherche sur la naissance de l’ontologie à l’époque moderne. (shrink)

This review focuses on the Ogdoas scholastica by Jacob Lorhard, published in 1606. The importance of this document turns on the fact that it contains what is almost certainly the first published occurrence of the term “ontology.” The body of the work consists in a series of diagrams called “diagraphs.” Relevant features of this compendium of diagraphs are: 1. that it does not in fact contain the word “ontology,” and 2. that Lorhard himself was not responsible for its (...) content. Ontology as a branch of philosophy is the science of what is, of the kinds and structures of objects, properties, events, processes and relations in every area of reality. ‘Ontology’ is often used by philosophers as a synonym for ‘metaphysics’ (literally: ‘what comes after the Physics’), a term which was used by early students of Aristotle to refer to what Aristotle himself called ‘first philosophy’. The term ‘ontology’ (or ontologia) was itself coined in 1613, independently, by two philosophers, Rudolf Göckel (...) (Goclenius), in his Lexicon philosophicum and Jacob Lorhard (Lorhardus), in his Theatrum philosophicum. The first occurrence in English recorded by the OED appears in Bailey’s dictionary of 1721, which defines ontology as ‘an Account of being in the Abstract’. (shrink)

Both ‘Sachverhalt’ and ‘state of affairs’ seem to have been derived from the juridical ‘status’ in the sense of 'status rerum' meaning: state or constitution of things. ‘Status’ signifies also in an extended sense ‘the way things stand, the condition or peculiarity of a thing in regard to its circumstances, position, order’. We describe the history of usage of ‘Sachverhalt’ from these beginnings, addressing the role of Goclenius, Lotze, Stumpf, Husserl and Adolf Reinach, whose theory of the relations between judgment (...) and Sachverhalt served as one starting point for the development of Reinach’s theory of speech acts in 1913. The discipline of ontology has enjoyed a checkered history since 1606, with a significant expansion in recent years. We focus here on those developments in the recent history of philosophy which are most relevant to the understanding of the increased acceptance of ontology, and especially of realist ontology, as a valuable method also outside the discipline of philosophy.

Barry Smith recently discussed the diagraphs of book eight of Jacob Lorhard’s Ogdoas scholastica under the heading “birth of ontology” (Smith, 2022; this issue). Here, I highlight the commonalities between the original usage of diagraphs in the tradition of Ramus for didactic purposes and the the usage of their present-day successors–modern ontologies–for computational purposes. The modern ideas of ontology and of the universal computer were born just two generations apart in the breakthrough century of instrumental reason.

On rencontre trois occurrences d’ontologie chez Leibniz, dont deux sont des ratures. Quelle représentation avait-il, en tant que bibliothécaire, de la tradition ontologique telle qu’elle se déployait depuis Jakob Lorhard (que nous abordons ici d’un point de vue scolaire)? [ES]Una historia de la ontología que pretenda dar cuenta de su acontecer de manera integral y equilibrada, ha de considerar tanto los aspectos historiográficos y filosóficos de sus fuentes así como los relativos a su contexto socio-cultural y necesariamente en relación con los de la metafísica, pues sus historias están indisolublemente ligadas, aunque ello no significa que necesariamente sean las mismas. En este trabajo, se intenta de manera elemental y mínima bosquejar dichas consideraciones, a través de una breve revisión historiográfica (...) de distintas nociones y hechos que puedan configurar una base sólida para la constitución de la historia de la ontología e interpretación de su significado y naturaleza. [EN] A history of ontology that pretends to be an integral and well-balanced account of its development, must considerer the historiographical and philosophical aspects of its sources, as well as the relation with its socio-cultural context, and necessarily, the relation with the same aspects of Metaphysics, as both histories are inextricably related, without necessarily being the same. In this work, it is intended, in a minimal way, to outline such considerations, trough a brief historiographic revision of the distinctive facts and notions that can configure a solid ground for the constitution of the history of ontology and the interpretation of its significance and nature.
