Improving socially constructed cross‐cultural communication in aged care homes: A critical perspective.Lily Dongxia Xiao, Eileen Willis, Ann Harrington, David Gillham, Anita De Bellis, Wendy Morey & Lesley Jeffers - 2018 - Nursing Inquiry 25 (1):e12208.
Cultural diversity between residents and staff is significant in aged care homes in many developed nations in the context of international migration. This diversity can be a challenge to achieving effective cross‐cultural communication. The aim of this study was to critically examine how staff and residents initiated effective cross‐cultural communication and social cohesion that enabled positive changes to occur. A critical hermeneutic analysis underpinned by Giddens’ Structuration Theory was applied to the study. Data were collected by interviews with residents or (...)

Electroencephalogram Access for Emotion Recognition Based on a Deep Hybrid Network.Qinghua Zhong, Yongsheng Zhu, Dongli Cai, Luwei Xiao & Han Zhang - 2020 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 14.
In the human-computer interaction, electroencephalogram access for automatic emotion recognition is an effective way for robot brains to perceive human behavior. In order to improve the accuracy of the emotion recognition, a method of EEG access for emotion recognition based on a deep hybrid network was proposed in this paper. Firstly, the collected EEG was decomposed into four frequency band signals, and the multiscale sample entropy features of each frequency band were extracted. Secondly, the constructed 3D MSE feature matrices were (...)

Does CEO–Auditor Dialect Connectedness Trigger Audit Opinion Shopping? Evidence from China.Xingqiang Du, Liang Xiao & Yingjie Du - 2023 - Journal of Business Ethics 184 (2):391-426.
Using the original information from the identification cards of CEOs and signing auditors to hand-collect the data on CEO–auditor dialect connectedness (_CADC_), we examine the effect of _CADC_ on audit opinion shopping (_AOS_), and further investigate the moderating effect of auditor reputation. Using a sample of Chinese listed firms during the period of 2007–2019, our findings reveal that the likelihood of _AOS_ is significantly higher for firms with _CADC_ than for their counterparts. This finding suggests that _CADC_ impairs auditor independence (...)

Exploring the dark side of informal mentoring: Experiences of nurses and midwives working in hospital settings in Uganda.Tracy Alexis Kakyo, Lily Dongxia Xiao & Diane Chamberlain - forthcoming - Nursing Inquiry:e12641.
Mentoring literature explores the dark side of mentoring as factors such as gender and race and how they affect the overall mentoring experience. The sociocultural context of the nursing and midwifery professions presents unique characteristics warranting a qualitative exploration of negative mentoring experiences. We aimed to characterise the dark side of mentoring based on informal mentoring relationships occurring among nurses and midwives working in hospitals. Utilising semistructured interviews in a qualitative descriptive design and reflexive thematic analysis, we examined the perceptions (...)

XIAO LD, KELTON M and PATERSON J. Nursing Inquiry 2012; 19: 322–333 Critical action research applied in clinical placement development in aged care facilitiesThe aim of this study was to develop quality clinical placements in residential aged care facilities for undergraduate nursing students undertaking their nursing practicum topics. The proportion of people aged over 65 years is expected to increase steadily from 13% in 2006 to 26% of the total population in Australia in 2051. However, when demand is increasing for (...)

A Novel User Emotional Interaction Design Model Using Long and Short-Term Memory Networks and Deep Learning.Xiang Chen, Rubing Huang, Xin Li, Lei Xiao, Ming Zhou & Linghao Zhang - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Emotional design is an important development trend of interaction design. Emotional design in products plays a key role in enhancing user experience and inducing user emotional resonance. In recent years, based on the user's emotional experience, the design concept of strengthening product emotional design has become a new direction for most designers to improve their design thinking. In the emotional interaction design, the machine needs to capture the user's key information in real time, recognize the user's emotional state, and use (...)

Do Bond Investors Care About Engagement Auditors’ Negative Experiences? Evidence from China.Guangming Gong, Liang Xiao, Si Xu & Xun Gong - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 158 (3):779-806.
Using data from China, where the identity of engagement auditors is disclosed, we find significant relationships between engagement auditors’ negative experiences and the costs of corporate bonds. Further tests differentiate field and review auditors’ experiences, and we find that both field and review auditors’ negative experiences are significantly related to higher costs of corporate bonds. In addition, we find that the above results are significant only when the engagement auditors are affiliated with non-Big10 audit firms. Using path analysis, we find (...)

Optimising social conditions to improve autonomy in communication and care for ethnic minority residents in nursing homes: A meta‐synthesis of qualitative research.Lily D. Xiao, Li Chen, Weifeng Han, Claudia Meyer, Amanda Müller, Lee-Fay Low, Bianca Brijnath & Leila Mohammadi - 2022 - Nursing Inquiry 29 (3):e12469.
A large proportion of nursing home residents in developed countries come from ethnic minority groups. Unmet care needs and poor quality of care for this resident population have been widely reported. This systematic review aimed to explore social conditions affecting ethnic minority residents' ability to exercise their autonomy in communication and care while in nursing homes. In total, 19 studies were included in the review. Findings revealed that ethno‐specific nursing homes create the ideal social condition for residents to express their (...)

Width Optimization of Array Electrode for Human Lung Electrical Resistance Tomography System Based on prior Knowledge.Liqing Xiao - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-13.
In electrical resistance tomography technology for human lung, under the same experimental conditions, the width of the sensitive field boundary electrode has a significant impact on the calculation accuracy of the inverse problem besides the finite element model topology. Aiming to improve the quality of reconstructed images, the FEM for human lung was set up based on prior knowledge. On this basis, the electrode width of the FEM was optimised by comparing the morbidity degrees of the sensitivity matrix and Hessian (...)
