Rediscovering Phenomenology. Phenomenological Essays on Mathematical Beings, Physical Reality, Perception and Consciousness.Luciano Boi, Pierre Kerszberg & Frédéric Patras - unknown
This book proposes a new phenomenological analysis of the questions of perception and cognition which are of paramount importance for a better understanding of those processes which underlies the formation of knowledge and consciousness. It presents many clear arguments showing how a phenomenological perspective helps to deeply interpret most fundamental findings of current research in neurosciences and also in mathematical and physical sciences.

  2. Theories of space-time in modern physics.Luciano Boi - 2004 - Synthese 139 (3):429 - 489.
The physicist's conception of space-time underwent two major upheavals thanks to the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Both theories play a fundamental role in describing the same natural world, although at different scales. However, the inconsistency between them emerged clearly as the limitation of twentieth-century physics, so a more complete description of nature must encompass general relativity and quantum mechanics as well. The problem is a theorists' problem par excellence. Experiment provide little guide, and the inconsistency mentioned above (...)

Some Mathematical, Epistemological, and Historical Reflections on the Relationship Between Geometry and Reality, Space–Time Theory and the Geometrization of Theoretical Physics, from Riemann to Weyl and Beyond.Luciano Boi - 2019 - Foundations of Science 24 (1):1-38.
The history and philosophy of science are destined to play a fundamental role in an epoch marked by a major scientific revolution. This ongoing revolution, principally affecting mathematics and physics, entails a profound upheaval of our conception of space, space–time, and, consequently, of natural laws themselves. Briefly, this revolution can be summarized by the following two trends: by the search for a unified theory of the four fundamental forces of nature, which are known, as of now, as gravity, electromagnetism, and (...)

The Role of Intuition and Formal Thinking in Kant, Riemann, Husserl, Poincare, Weyl, and in Current Mathematics and Physics.Luciano Boi - 2019 - Kairos 22 (1):1-53.
According to Kant, the axioms of intuition, i.e. space and time, must provide an organization of the sensory experience. However, this first orderliness of empirical sensations seems to depend on a kind of faculty pertaining to subjectivity, rather than to the encounter of these same intuitions with the real properties of phenomena. Starting from an analysis of some very significant developments in mathematical and theoretical physics in the last decades, in which intuition played an important role, we argue that nevertheless (...)

The answer to some of the longstanding issues in the 20th century theoretical physics, such as those of the incompatibility between general relativity and quantum mechanics, the broken symmetries of the electroweak force acting at the subatomic scale and the missing mass of Higgs particle, and also those of the cosmic singularity and the black matter and energy, appear to be closely related to the problem of the quantum texture of space-time and the fluctuations of its underlying geometry. Each region (...)

Una sensibilità affinata sugli spigoli della malattia. La “grande salute” come potenziamento epistemico ed estetico tra Friedrich Nietzsche e Theodor Fontane.Ludovica Boi - 2023 - Studi di Estetica 27 (3).
The article connects the topic of health in Nietzsche’s thought with the perspective that emerges from some novels of Theodor Fontane, by leaning on a close interaction between philosophy and literature. It is shown that two of Fontane’s characters, Victoire von Carayon from the novel Schach von Wuthenow and Waldemar von Haldern from the novel Stine, embody and depict specific Nietzschean ideas concerning the relationship between the experience of illness and the development of a higher cognitive faculty. How could be (...)

Let us start by some general definitions of the concept of complexity. We take a complex system to be one composed by a large number of parts, and whose properties are not fully explained by an understanding of its components parts. Studies of complex systems recognized the importance of “wholeness”, defined as problems of organization (and of regulation), phenomena non resolvable into local events, dynamics interactions in the difference of behaviour of parts when isolated or in higher configuration, etc., in (...)

New Trends in Geometry, and its Role in the Natural and Life Sciences.Claudio Bartocci, Luciano Boi & Corrado Sinigaglia (eds.) - 2011 - World Scientific.
This volume focuses on the interactions between mathematics, physics, biology and neuroscience by exploring new geometrical and topological modeling in these fields. Among the highlights are the central roles played by multilevel and scale-change approaches in these disciplines. The integration of mathematics with physics, molecular and cell biology, and the neurosciences, will constitute the new frontier and challenge for 21st century science, where breakthroughs are more likely to span across traditional disciplines.

Luciano Boi - unknown
In this article we criticize the way in which the concept of information is used in the biological sciences. First, we start by giving a revised and larger definition of genetic information, by underlining the fact that the linear sequence map of the human genome is an incomplete description of our genetic information. This is because information on genome function and gene regulation is also encoded in the way DNA molecule is folded up with proteins to form chromatin structures. Secondly, (...)

On Emergence and Causality in the Living World.Luciano Boi - unknown
We discuss the concept of emergence, and try to show that it is one of the most significant issues in the study of complex living systems. We stress particularly that emergent properties possess a specific causal power, which is not reducible to the power of their constituents. The emergence of physiological functions is profoundly related to the self-organized dynamics of biological systems. The increasing complexity of cellular and organismal activity favors the emergence of novelties and the integration of the active (...)
