La conscience de soi a-t-elle été méconnue des hommes du Haut Moyen Âge? Se restreignant à l’époque de Charlemagne et parcourant les diverses sources théologiques – les commentaires exégétiques, les traités anti-adoptianistes, l’œuvre rédigée afin de réfuter l’adoration des icônes instaurée par le concile de Nicée II, les traités sur les vices et les vertus – la recherche permet de mieux percer la relation dialectique entre natura et persona ou encore entre commun et individuel et de détecter quelques modèles de (...) la perception de soi. Le « souci de soi » carolingien met en œuvre une stratégie : comment, en évitant la corruption de soi par les vices, on parvient à la perfection de la persona aux temps eschatologiques. (shrink)

During the first Carolingian period, the creed, defined as symbolum, not only signified the political and ecclesiological unity of Charlemagne’s kingdom and then empire, but was also a factor in the organization of theological treatises. The collection of creeds, initially included in Dagulf ’s manuscript — made as a gift for Pope Hadrian I — was widely copied and «corrected» in the Carolingian world. These emendations to the creed reveal the Carolingian desire to defend faith against new «heresies» like adoptianism (...) or Greek pneumatology. (shrink)

The knowledge of the Greek by the Carolingians was well studied by the modern scholars. This article focuses on the third generation of intellectuals from this period, on their attitude towards Greek language and the ways it was used in the classrooms. Despite the negative view of the Greek knowledge by some of his contemporaries, Sedulius Scottus appears to be an intellectual interested in the Greek thought that he collected from the different Latin sources like Macrobius, for instance. His awareness (...) of the definition of the soul by Plato leads him to state some philosophical ideas as an active principle for the essence of beings and things. (shrink)
