In _The Idealism of Freedom_, Klaus Vieweg argues for a Hegelian turn in philosophy: Hegel’s idealism of freedom contains a number of epoch-making ideas that articulate a new understanding of freedom, which still shape contemporary philosophy.

“Hegel and scepticism” remains an intriguing topic directly concerning the logical and methodological core of Hegel’s system. A series of contributions is unfolding around a keynote paper by Klaus Vieweg, which tries to understand and restate the limits and the content of the relationship between Hegels philosophy and scepticism. Various Hegel readers with different concerns are dealing with Hegel’s strategy in a large range of theoretical areas.

En la Filosofía del Derecho, Hegel dedica especial atención a uno de los problemas más preocupantes de las sociedades y los estados modernos: la inequitativa distribución de la riqueza y la consiguiente secuela de inequidades e injusticias sociales. De acuerdo con el diagnóstico de Hegel, tal reconocimiento tiene, ciertamente, su punto de partida en la esferas del derecho abstracto y se prolonga en la esfera de la moralidad, en las que el individuo es reconocido como persona o sujeto moral, pero es sólo en la esfera superior de la eticidad donde el reconocimiento de todos los derechos que garantizan una vida digna, alcanza validez y necesidad universales, dado que es en dicha esfera, concretamente en la esfera del estado, donde dicho reconocimiento logra asegurarse en las diferentes instancias legales y jurídicas que lo componen. Tal es la vía por la cual la filosofía política de Hegel intenta ofrecer una salida a un problema que, como el señalado, sigue siendo una amenaza a las sociedades del presente y un cuestionamiento a las estructuras mismas del poder. Independientemente de la viabilidad de la solución ofrecida, la filosofía política de Hegel recaba aquí una vigencia pertinente e incuestionable. (shrink)

Der Skeptizismus ist der advocatus diaboli der Philosophie. Welche Immunisierungsstrategien fand man gegen ihn? Zu den spannenden und lehrreichen Facetten des Deutschen Idealismus gehört zweifelsohne die mit der Auseinandersetzung mit Kants kritizistischer Position anhebende Debatte um einen neuen Skeptizismus. Von ausserordentlichem Interesse bleibt hierbei der Gehalt der Repliken Reinholds, Fichtes und Hegels auf die Attacken von Gottlob Ernst Schulze. In Fichte’s definition of freedom as a character of rationality, Hegel sees the “summit of the Fichtean system,” an ineradicable core idea of modern philosophy. But from the general, pure will of Fichte, the particularity of willing cannot be rigorously derived. In the case of Fichte, the abstract universal resonates with the law and master, and the particular individuals enter into the absolute tyranny of such empty generality. The first system of freedom threatens to accomplish “the destruction of all liberty,” (...) transforming absolute, abstract freedom into the horrors of uniformity and equality, into a ‘galley state’. On the basis of Fichte’s Grundlage des Naturrechts and Der geschlossene Handelsstaat the danger of transforming his defense of freedom into an apology for a preventive and monitoring state is sketched – but who monitors the monitors?Hegel sieht in Fichtes Bestimmung der Freiheit als Charakter der Vernünftigkeit das „Höchste des Fichteschen Systems“, einen unhintergehbaren Kerngedanken moderner Philosophie. Aber aus dem allgemeinen, reinen Willen Fichtescher Prägung kann die Besonderheit des Wollens nicht stringent abgeleitet werden. Can one speak philosophically of a justified limitation of freedom? Hegel’s logically founded definition of free will and his understanding of right and duty can contribute to a clarification of the concept of freedom. Important is a precise differentiation between freedom and caprice (Willkür) – the latter being a necessary but one-sided element of the free will. In caprice, the will is not yet in the form of reason. Rational rights and duties are not a restriction of freedom. Insofar as (...) individual rights can collide (e. g. in emergency situations), there can be a temporary and proportionate restriction of certain rights in favour of higher rights, such as the right to life. Dictatorships are instances of capricious rule which restrict freedom; the rationally designed state, by contrast, restricts only caprice. What is tobe defined are the duties and the rights of the state and the duties and the rights of the citizens. (shrink)

Debido al interés de Hegel por la función histórica del arte como factor de cultura, su filosofía del arte es inseparable de su filosofía de la historia. Las formas universales del arte (simbólica, clásica y romántica), corresponden al proceso de formación y realización de la subjetividad humana y su libertad en el mundo oriental, el antiguo o griego, y el moderno. El articulo se concentra en la forma clásica, o sea el mundo de la cultura griega. Su clasicismo es un (...) "punto medio", porque se ubica en el reino de la belleza, entre la naturaleza y la libertad. A pesar de su belleza, el arte de la forma clásica para nosotros modernos es un arte del pasado, es un arte para la libertad de un ciudadano de la polis pero no lo es para la libertad individualizada y universal de un ciudadano cosmopolita. En el presente artículo el autor se encara con la célebre y muy diversamente interpretada tesis de Hegel en torno al fin del arte como modo supremo de captar la verdad o el espíritu. En esta confrontación, el autor intenta penetrar el sentido que tiene la modernidad, y no sólo el arte moderno, en el contexto de la filosofía hegeliana del arte. En la dilucidación de tal sentido, el autor gana una valoración decisiva del concepto hegeliano de “subjetividad”, como concepto (...) fundacional e identificador de la modernidad. Sitúa en esta concepción el horizonte especulativo desde el cual la idea del fin del arte, lejos de ser la proclamación de su muerte, se auto presenta como momento inmanente en la realización de la subjetividad libre y espiritualizada. El fin del arte sería, así. el comienzo de la historia de la libertad humana, el comienzo de la existencia humana propiamente dicha. (shrink)

Sin una explicación del significado constitutivo de la estructura del pensamiento escéptico, no es posible una interpretación adecuada del desarrollo del pensamiento del Hegel temprano. Particularmente la recepción del pirronismo de Sexto Empírico, así como las lecturas paralelas de Sexto y Platón, tuvieron una importancia decisiva para la comprensión hegeliana de la negatividad para la génesis del proyecto de un “escepticismo que se consuma a sí mismo” de la Fenomenología. A key part of Hegel?s practical philosophy is his theory of civil society and the idea of a rational regulation of the market. This is the foundation of Hegel?s theory of a social state. The copyright on the notion of a modern society of freedom and a rational, social state belongs to Hegel. Hegel proves himself to be the thinker who until now has provided the most convincing foundation for freedom in modernity. The theoretical foundation and at the same time (...) bone of contention of Hegel?s political thought is to be found in his concept of ethical life, in particular in his theory of civil society. The current shipwreck of deregulated capitalism does not mean the foundering of our journey towards a free society. Nevertheless the deficiencies and unsustainability of both traditional models - socialist collective ownership and market fundamentalism - exhibit two contradictory claims to a share of the wealth of nations. To take up Hegel?s project is, in essence, to aim at a new conception of an environmentally and socially sustainable and just society, and a corresponding world order.
