The role of research ethics consultants in biomedical research has increased to the point that they have an advisory capacity at all research institutes. For such professionals, we have established an educational system, which includes teaching materials, training methods, and nationwide educational workshops. These workshops have served to examine the developed system’s usefulness and to provide realistic training for consultant candidates. In addition, we have used the current workshop to encourage clinical research investigators to participate. Subsequently, we examined its usefulness (...) as an opportunity to provide exposure to research ethics. In October 2019, we held a 1-day pilot workshop in Tokushima, Japan, which included a basic lecture in research ethics. During the lecture, two sets of materials were used for case discussion: case 1, covering issues related to a clinical trial, and case 2, covering issues related to human biological specimens. At the end of the workshop, a 30-item self-reporting anonymous questionnaire was provided. Of the 13 total participants, 9 were clinical research investigators and related personnel, while 6 had no direct intention to act as consultants. Respondents indicated that case 2 was more difficult than case 1. However, both cases were generally accepted as educational materials; thus, satisfaction was expressed in relation to both. As the evaluations of the cases were generally positive, we will further examine the usefulness of participation in the workshop in the cultivation of research ethics in the investigator community. Schnorr randomness and computable randomness are natural concepts of random sequences. However van Lambalgen’s Theorem fails for both randomnesses. In this paper we define truth-table Schnorr randomness and truth-table reducible randomness, for which we prove that van Lambalgen's Theorem holds. We also show that the classes of truth-table Schnorr random reals relative to a high set contain reals Turing equivalent to the high set. It follows that each high Schnorr random real is half of a real for which van Lambalgen's (...) Theorem fails. The study of Martin‐Löf randomness on a computable metric space with a computable measure has seen much progress recently. In this paper we study Martin‐Löf randomness on a more general space, that is, a computable topological space with a computable measure. On such a space, Martin‐Löf randomness may not be a natural notion because there is no universal test, and Martin‐Löf randomness and complexity randomness (defined in this paper) do not coincide in general. We show that SCT3 is a sufficient (...) condition for the existence and coincidence, and study how much we can weaken this condition. (shrink)

Van Lambalgen's Theorem plays an important role in algorithmic randomness, especially when studying relative randomness. In this paper we extend van Lambalgen's Theorem by considering the join of infinitely many reals which are random relative to each other. In addition, we study computability of the reals in the range of Omega operators. It is known that $\Omega^{\phi'}$ is high. We extend this result to that $\Omega^{\phi^{(n)}}$ is $\textrm{high}_n$ . We also prove that there exists A such that, for each n (...) , the real $\Omega^A_M$ is $\textrm{high}_n$ for some universal Turing machine M by using the extended van Lambalgen's Theorem. (shrink)

Japan has one of the highest numbers of high-cost medical devices installed relative to its population. While evaluations of the distribution of these devices traditionally involve simple population-based assessments, an indicator that includes the demand of these devices would more accurately reflect the situation. The purpose of this study was to develop an indicator of the supply–demand balance of such devices, using examples of magnetic resonance imaging scanners (MRI) and extracorporeal shockwave lithotripters (ESWL), and to investigate the relationship between this (...) indicator, personnel distribution statuses and operating statuses at the prefectural level. -/- Using data from nation-wide surveys and claims data from 16 hospitals, we developed an indicator based on the ratio of the supplied number of device units to the number of device units in demand for MRI and ESWL. The latter value was based on patient volume and utilization proportion. Correlation analyses were conducted between the supply–demand balances of these devices, personal distribution and operating statuses. -/- Comparisons between our indicator and conventional population-based indicators revealed that 15% and 30% of prefectures were at risk of underestimating the availability of MRI and ESWL, respectively. The numbers of specialist personnel/device units showed significant, negative correlations with our indicators in both devices. -/- Utilization-based analyses of health care resource placement and utilization status provide a more accurate indication than simple population-based assessments, and can assist decision makers in reviewing gaps between health policy and management. Such an indicator therefore has the potential to be a tool in helping to improve the efficiency of the allocation and placement of such devices. (shrink)
